Exactly the problem with AoC. I believe the doom 3 engine is still being used in other games too because quake 4 modified it a little I think and then quake wars and call of duty 4 modified it a little bit too. Cod 4 runs great for its graphics. Will the AoC engine ever be used again...? No because no one can run it.
Ya, but really nice graphics do not belong in MMOs as they will cause extreme fps lag in open areas and places with lots of people. Kinda pointless when you need a top of the line computer to run it. If anyone knows Doom 3 it has really nice graphics, but the reason why it can run smoothly is because its mainly single player based and its mostly in closed areas. Instancing can only limit some of the lag.
Instancing does other things besides changing the graphics. I think it can actually improve the quests and the gw missions. Haven't played AoC but at least in GW instancing got rid of the lame quests that are typically found in free mmos. There are no more kill X amount of guys and receive X items, and there is no more camping and waiting for a boss to spawn to farm off of.
GW offers many different types of pvp which I like.
1) Random Arenas - 4v4 Battle (Random grouping)
2) Team Arenas - 4v4 Battle (you assemble your own team)
3) Hero Battles - 4v4 Battle with capture points (One player controlling 3 "heroes" or npcs, only nightfall and eotn has heroes)
4) Alliance Battles - 12v12 Battle with capture points and npc assistance(You assemble a 4 man team to be paired up with 2 other teams. This is the whole kurzick vs luxon thing. Factions only)
5) GvG - 8v8 Battle guild vs guild battle (more competitive and complex)
6) Heroes Ascent - 8v8 or 8v8v8 Battles tournament style to get to the hall of heroes where you can earn some weapons and stuff if you win. (Variety of different battle styles and more competitive)
