As for the story line.... wow... if you don't think Vanguard has a good storyline you are somehow missing the lore when adventuring, crafting or parleying. The big storyline is very interesting and the mini-story lines are weaved in exceptionally well. Paying attention to the lore can be very helpful later on in the game :) Listen to your diplomats and what they are able to learn.
Combat System... what do feel is lacking and what classes have you tried out? Sure it's complex, but when a group or a raid is working together it is really a lot of fun.
Death Penalty: I agree that the death penalty can be harsh at higher levels, but only on the very rare occasions when you can't get to your tombstone (or get a rezz) and you have to summon it to an alter. Even then you will only lose less than 4%. Example: at 98% into level 50 I died and had to summon my tombstone. I lost 3% and I'm now at 95% into level 50. With almost every death, even at level 50, you can recover your tombstone and regain the lost experience in a very short time.
Lore: Almost all of the game lore is limited to Diplomacy NPCs. Hopefully, that will be expanded to other NPCs someday, as it is a very interesting story line.
Combat System: Some classes do look better than others, but I play a healer in 1st person view so I don't see much of the action anyway.

no sorting in diplo quests or crafting quests
For crafting info and quests try Vanguard Crafters and Vanguard Crafters Wiki.
For Diplomacy info and quests try Vanguard Tact
I play in 1st person view, and my main is a healer, so I really don't care what the animations look like.
Should you decide to play on the PvP server, the first time you see another player, instead of attacking you are much more likely to run up to him, give him a big hug, and say "Thank God ! At last, another living soul !!!".

I enjoy Vanguard and I hope the game start to grow, but I noticed Vanguard playerbase is spreading misinformation.
1- Vanguard community is not growing or healthy, there is just one semi populated server ( seradon ) any other populated game , from Everquest 2 to Age of Conan have at least 10x that.
2- Vanguard still has a lot of bugs even after more than a year GM help is needed to finish some basic quests and performance is far from perfect.
3- The game still has some alpha/beta issues like, characters still incomplete after they cuted facial customization, BOP or non BOP decision, animations etc.
4- Diplomacy is totally incomplete.
5- End game has less content than most MMOs, from Everquest 2 to DDO and Age of Conan.
As I said, I enjoy Vanguard, I think Telon is a great game universe and I do belive in Vanguard potential, but if the Vanguard community keep spreading misinformation about the game and keep thinking the game is “complete” the game will never show its real potential.
Everyone that enjoy RPGs and MMOs should try Vanguard now, the game is not broken as it was at the release, but keep in mind, the game still in “semi-beta” state and the community is very, very small.
I'm sorry, but I must disagree with much of what you are saying.
1) Only the PvP server is having population problems. All other servers are healthy and growing.
2) Every game has, and will always have bugs. When I left EQ after 6 years it still had bugs, and new ones were introduced with almost every patch.
3) Yes, the character customization is more limited now after they made changes to allow visible helmets. But those are the things you have to deal with when you offer 19 races and 16 classes - which is a LOT more than AoC offers.
4) Agreed.
5) Agreed. However, my guild has enough level 50s to fill all 4 raid groups easily, and we are less than halfway through APW. For those hardcore raiding guilds that rush to be first, and then have nothing else to accomplish, for them there isn't enough end-game content. But, for the vast majority of players, there is plenty.
I appreciate your opinions, and these are just my opinions.
You are right that some people are hyping Vanguard too strongly, which can cause others to have expectations that are too high.
