Instead of finding the game that will "kill" SWG, try finding me the game that will kill MxO and then I'll start to "worry" (because I really don't care) about SWG.
Yeah sub numbers will go down, but more than likely it'll just get put into sunset mode (which it somewhat is already) and be a station pass filler just like MxO.
its like if bioware launched a new matrix online game.
updated versions will not always "kill" the old version, of course (e.g. everquest 1 & 2). But it's hard to predict anything else for vulnerable games like mxo and swg.
True but even if the game only has 10,000 subs (not people keep in mind, this includes alts, credit farmers...if they still farm SWG, etc) then they are still making $1.8 million per year. Cut development and support to just enough to barely keep the game running day to day (sunset mode) and it will still turn a profit.
Don't get me wrong, I think SWG should have been taken "out back" a long time ago but from a business point of view I can unfortunately still see it running for awhile.
Majority of games have horrible forums....but SWG was different. Their forums were just outstanding...even after the NGE. Hell I knew people who continued to pay a sub even after the NGE just for the forums and refused to log in game but yet enjoyed the forums enough to pay $15 a month.
However this doesn't appear to be the case anymore. Now they are just a breeding ground of stupid pre teen (maturity level since some are, sadly, older than they act) sugar high kids repeating the latest internet buzz words (fail, epic, lulz, etc) over and over again while posting pictures we have all seen a thousand times and insulting each other over the smallest things to try to look like someone of importance and authority. I can't even stand to read the forums anymore and it's almost an embarrassment to say I once trolled there.

I'm in the middle of taken a break from SWG...actually I think I have moved on just for the fact that after 5 years, it's just time to play other games and focus on other things. I rarely even browse the forums anymore (once every couple weeks now) so needless to say, I don't stay up to date with the news.
When I saw today that Jeff took his own life...it shocked me. I really wasn't that familiar with him though. I remember people posting that he was basically brainchild of the NGE way back and that was about it. Then I read an article about his death on gamepolitics.com ( http://www.gamepolitics.com/2008/10/03/star-wars-galaxies-developer-commits-suicide ) and in there was a link to escaptistmagazine.com: ( http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/op-ed/801-SWG-NGE-Crying-Freeman ) which had an article about his true involvement with the NGE and quotes and links to his explanations on this very forum.
I took an hour or two reading over all his posts, laughing at quite a many, but also realizing I was wrong to judge him the way I did, like so many, based on the false information spread by those who didn't understand. I'm amazed at the fact he was able to keep his composure after being bombarded with posts of hate and anger in which he constantly had to repeat himself over and over again. I found myself reading his words and developing a high respect for the man...only to have myself remind me that he is gone now. It was somewhat surreal. However I understand he is no longer in pain and I hope those who were in his life find the peace they need.
Some think the constant hate he received from the misconception that he was solely responsible for the NGE still had a minor part to play with his decision to take his life but I disagree. When I was police, majority of my interaction with people was them telling me how awful I am. How I'm purposely singling them out for a variety of reasons (I'm racist, sexist, a wimp, a loser, etc) and called every single curse word you can imagine, insults, threats, etc...it's a very thankless job. People believe that no matter what wrong they are doing, they are not to blame. But to this day, I never took any of that home, and I heard this stuff pretty much everyday. Never once did anything they say, any of their insults, get or mean anything to me because they were just strangers who had no idea who I really was. So I would like to believe that Jeff was able to do the same. I'm sure whatever reasons he had to do what he thought he needed to do are far beyond our understanding.
With all being said, here's to you Jeff. A good man who went to early. Though many miss him we know he is resting peacefully where there are no deadlines, bugs, or numbers to worry about. He's now free to be what he needs to be. Take care Mr. Freeman.
though the game is improving, there just seems to be nothing left for me there anymore.
also it seems that community is starting to dumb itself down....which is something i thought i would never say. i can't even stand to read to forums anymore since they are now just full of childish flames and pictures of the latest pre teen internet catch phrases like "epic" and "fail" amid a plethora of senseless and humorless and down right stupid motivation maker pictures. i never ever thought that the community would be one of the things keeping me away from swg.
How do you feel about advertising inside games?
