Skatty, that 400k number was the official number that Funcom put into its 2nd Quarter report to it's investors. That number was stated as the number of accounts at the end of June and that number had to be correct or Funcom risks getting sued by it's investors for misrepresentation. The odd thing about this situation is that Funcom states that the Aug. 14th number of active accounts are exactly the same. It is possible to have exactly the same number of accounts 45 days later but it is highly unlikely. Funcom has made false claims in the past about various situations and most likely they are doing it again to make the game seem more solid than it actually is. Honestly, if their situation is as dire as what most people think than i'm not 100% sure that I wouldnt do the same thing if I was in their place. It seems like they are running scared and will try anything they can think of in order to keep their heads above water.
Now, this is a bit of what was in the article that you posted:
"At a booth on GC 2008's show floor the company was showing off some of the upcoming content in the game, including new dungeons, DirectX10 graphical features, and confirmation that an expansion pack is in development, though no real details were available."
The key word in this sentence is "Upcoming". Upcoming can mean anything from a few hours to a few years or more.
Also, "expansion pack in development" can mean that they have put a few ideas down on paper for the new expansion but that is the extent of it.
I have learned a LONG time ago that it is best to read between the lines when confronted by a PR employee/management employee. Their job is to spin reality to make the company look great.
If Funcom said that we would see the stated improvements in 2 or 3 months then that statement would make me more comfortable. If they said that we can expect to see an expansion in the 3rd quarter of next year, then that would mean that they have something going enough to set up that timeline.
Im just seriously tired of Funcom dangling a carrot in front of all of their customers with promises of something better just around the corner, and when you turn that corner all you see if yet another carrot :(
I, too, have a bit of hesitation at these numbers as the definition of "active subs" itself can probably mean different things in the eyes of an end user vs the eyes of a marketing person.
However, I wasn't trying to say I believe these numbers or not, nor was I trying to say "Here is proof of such and such numbers for active subs." I was just reading some articles on IGN.com and thought it was a relevant article pertaining to this topic. I was making a neutral post.
I can understand why some folks are skeptical about the sub numbers. With the whole "Where is my DX10 and Drunken Brawling and PvP and what-have-you" stuff that was promised at release but not delivered, the skepticism is 100% warranted. Whether 400k is true or not will be endlessly debated in these forums with neither side being able to convince the other side that "The Sky is <falling/endless>" (choose your option based on your side)
The debate on the active subs is like watching an unstoppable force slam into an immoveable object.
But it makes for a great entertainment while watching the morning news :)
IGN.com reports 400k active subs, as said by Erling Ellingson

Food for thought...

Did it play better on one OS over another, or did was it the same on both? Any noticeable difference on one vs the other?
I currently have XP and am thinking of upgrading to Vista. Besides all the normal Vista-related concerns, the one I have for this forum is: Does Vista help the performance of AoC? Is it more stable? Does it run smoother? Or is it just the opposite? I know DX10 is not in game yet, but when it does, how will that figure into the equation?
Please refrain from fanboi/troll comments as the goal of this topic is more of a technincal topic if the merging of AoC and Vista is recommended by the general AoC populous.
Here is my current PC specs just in case, though this topic really is for anyone wondering if they should upgrade to Vista.
Chip: Intel QX9650 Yorkfield 3.0g
Mem: 4GB DDR2 1000
Vid: 9800 GX2 1G
HD: 500gb 7200rpm
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks folks!

Thing is 53 complaints from 62 of the past 3yrs have been dealt with. Better than some other companies listed there - regardless of how popular a game is // how ever many subs a game has - it still shows they do something with the complaints they receive.
Bottom line is the report has nothing to do with AoC nor paying for beta or whatever excuse people what to bring forward in tying the report to AoC.
So Avery how long has AO been free to play? They have had 62 complaints over a free game, which maybe had 30 K players in 2005. Thats a pretty bad ratio if you ask me.
Funcom has had other games too other than Anarchy Online. The Longest Journey comes to mind off the top of my head and I know there havebeen others. Do we know that all these complaints are from the subscriber base of Anarchy Online? Not a dig, just that I don't think the report states where these complaints originate from. Some of them could come from other business partners for all we know and not just the end-users of their products.
Thats why I think these stats need to be taken with a grain of salt. Without knowing the context of the complaints, its hard for me personally to get a solid feeling for what they could mean.
