- Theres something with new MMO that really disturb me. Like, really, disturbing.
I think that really most everything has been said already here.
In the games that I have played, I usually don't spend a ton of time talking through text chat.
Part of that is because there is vent available for clan/guild/friend chat. That makes a difference, because most MMO's have a number of different chat channels, which makes it easier to ignore one or more of them. I usually ignore the most public channels, whether it's OOC chat (AoC), broads (SotNW), or general chat (bunch of MMO's) because there is usually a high degree of stupidity there.
Part of the reason is also because as mentioned several times before, most games are extremely linear in character/storyline development, and players don't seem to really gain anything from taking time out to smell the roses, so to speak. If your character is only really good when you hit the highest level/get the best gear, wouldn't you spend most of your time trying to achieve that? If you don't, then someone else will, and you will constantly just keep on playing catchup.
Part of the reason is also from the interfaces that most current MMO's have. You can't really hold a conversation through text while actively doing something, especially not in combat.
I think until a game somehow has it setup that you're rewarded for hanging out in public areas, you're not going to see a lot of text based chatting.
