    • And another problem, which may be a permanent flaw, is that people won't pay to lose.  If one side is dominating consistently, the losing side will either re-roll to the winning one (good for Mythic short term, but speeds up the problem) or move on to another game where they can "win" regularly (bad for Mythic, and also speeds up the problem) and not feel defeated on a constant basis.

The winning side is going to run out of opponents, and wonder what to do next.  Sadly, there are guilds dedicated to this outcome, as they don't care about an individual game, just their gameplay.  They are happy to pillage a game to failure and move on to the next one - *they* get what they want, to hell with everyone else.

How do you cater to a playerbase that won't pay to lose, and has a dedicated portion happy to drive off your customers?  My view of MJ is dimming, but I have sympathy for him trying to meet these design challenges.

      WAR (Warhammer Online)
    • Heavy Metal: Play the KBS and the BG a week before the patch goes live!
    • You know, this "rollout" for the Knight and Blackguard, while it looks like fun and an interesting way to do the new classes...

... makes me call BS BS BS on the "they weren't ready" excuse for not having the classes in at launch.

When it was originally announced during CB that the last 4 classes weren't going in at launch, the cynical reaction was "Oh, you are just saving them for carrot add-ins down the road" and the quote, problems, unquote with the class play was a whole bunch of smoke to cover that up.

I'll admit that Mythic did a nice job pushing that cover, as it made them look smart for not rushing broken classes out to break at launch.

But this Heavy Metal event is just a bit too polished and would have taken a bit too much pre-planning to be something Mythic threw together from August until now - they had Launch to complete and the rough seas of the first month to sail through to have this suddenly appear out of their back pocket.

No, either Mythic is really good and whipped this event up in record time (kudos to them if they've pulled it off)

Mythic put this together in a short period of time, and it'll be a buggy mess (suicidal given the population issues and the WoW expansion launch, but certainly possible given MMO history)

Or this was planned months ago and Mythic lobbed smoke grenades to get from point A to point B with it.  Wonderfully executed - and a giant insult to the "We tell it like it is" vibe that Mythic has been cultivating for the past few months.  Smooth, fellas, smooth - the salt industry will appreciate the new-found business.

I really do hate being this cynical, but jiminy christmas...

      WAR (Warhammer Online)
    • What happened in WAR beta?
    • Simply put, they focused so tightly on testing that they didn't run the biggest test of all - how the game plays as a whole.  Did they run out of time, or were they overconfident and ignored that test?  That's a good question.

The open test was capped too low and run too quickly for the grind choices to set in.  The closed tests were mission orders - "we'll load X zones, we want you to test Y" like open RvR, a zone's quests, or a city siege.  Running off and doing full-time scenarios was a ticket off the bus, so it didn't happen.  Leave it to the players to end up deciding what THEY want to do - the test that wasn't run until after launch.  Surprise.

    • I'm generally a fan of VN but they've been nuking all threads talking about the exploit problems.  A poor decision in my mind - if Mythic is going to talk about it then there's no need to control the discussion.  If Mythic isn't going to talk about what's going on anytime soon...<flintstone>Oh boy</flintstone>

      WAR (Warhammer Online)
    • RvR exp uped
    • It's going to need a lot more carrot on the end of the stick - it's plain to see that overland RvR will require some serious "incentives" to get people out of the scenarios.  It's funny how the Beta led them astray, because Mythic told testers to test the overland game, and they did.  Their focused testing didn't allow for a period of the players doing what *THEY* wanted - and they got a surprise.  Any new game paying attention should factor in some non-focused testing if they want to avoid it happening to them.
