Generally speaking, it is worth the trouble. The turn-based fighting is strategic without being slow. The crafting system lets you make stuff without slowing down the gameplay. The storlines, if you bother to read them, are a little lengthly but generally interesting to read. Quests are abundant, and naturally lead you to the area you should be fighting in.
I'm thinking NCSoft just came to the realisation that the CoH people who were willing to pay for CoV have already done so - new players are more-or-less forced to buy the Good vs Evil edition (unless there's still a solo version lurking around in a dark alleyway somewhere). So, since the cash cow is running out of milk, might as well go ahead and integrate it all. Helps keep CoH people on the line.
Eeehhh. Yes and no, Desert.
Yes, if gold/influence/whatever is made to be less important, it will be less in demand, making it less profitable for farming and selling. HOWEVER: If you say gold is less important, then how do you get what you want? If everything becomes bound, you're stuck farming yourself because that's what you gotta do to get what you want. From my PoV, it's just exchanging one problem for another.

Guild Wars is what you make of it. If you want to play it as if it's an offline RPG, you won't be able to go at it purely solo, but you can hire NPC henchmen or bring along NPC heroes instead of real people. If you want to play it as if it's an MMO, they you simply replace the henchmen and heroes with real people.
In the end, you're going to come across real people in towns, so by default it's inbetween the two. From there it's up to you to do what you want.
I second this comment merely for input's sake.
What you do is up to you. If you don't want to pvp, just get your character to level 20 in the "RPG" realms. If you want to PVP, sign up for a PVP character and have a blast. Though, IMO, doing both is the best thing to do. You get stuff for your PVP character by doing RPG things.
At least, that's how it worked the last time I played.
Yeah, not very helpful in what you're looking for. So I'll just be brief.
Holic (from netgame) - Very cute. I enjoy it casually.
Pi Story (from Aeria Games) - Also cute, more dunegon/party based. Open beta will be starting this month.
City of Heroes - Yes, you have to pay (you never said free only). I've never been into superhero stuff but oddly I've gotten into this game.
Mabinogi (from Nexon) - another cute, though more serious than Holic and Pi Story.
Nexon just released a FTP MMO FPS to open beta (Combat Arms) but I havn't tried it yet.
