I have been gaming on the PC for a long time, I used to by at least 2 games a month and most games would be forgotten the next month. I never played a MMO which didn't keep me amused at least a month, so I really don't think I have ever been burned in the long term, but in the short term, AO was unplayable at release, I quit feeling burned but came back later and got my moneys worth, actually played a couple of years. I also hated EQ2 at realease, but with many changes it is a game I now spend a few months a year. Age of Conan, my machine is not powerful enough, but I will soon be changing and have a few friends in the game so I will surly get my moneys worth.
I didn't play Tabula Rase or City of Heroes more than a month, but found a lot of things interesting in each and do not consider I was burned.
So I guess it is all a matter of perspective, my first MMO's were Ultima Online and Everquest, which I played for 3 and 5 years, and if I expect every new MMO fo give the same experience as the first ones, I would constantly be decieved. Your first one is always special, yea, I mean MMO ...
As for LOTRO and the 30 days free. I bought the digital upgrade and did not get 30 days free, buy after reading the support forums, if I understand things right, I was wrong and anyone who buys the retail box gets 30 days free, if he starts a new account or upgrades.
But this is not a usual thing and its the first time I have seen a MMO do it, wish I had seen it sooner, I would love to have a Dvd copy of the game.

I don't think it's inferior game at all, in fact, I think Lotro and WoW are the only two MMOs worth playing at the minute - just my opinion, of course
They both have a very similar PvE system, so they are the two games that YOU find worth playing. There are quite a few very acceptable MMO's, just nothing that comes near the population of WoW, such as:
Everquest 2
City of Heroes/Villains
Age of Conan
Warhammer Online
Final Fantasy XI
Guild Wars
and others.
Lotro does NOT give a free month with the expansion. But if you buy the retail box and start a brand new account, they also include the original game and that will give you a free month. recap: you get a free month for starting a new account, no free month just for adding an expansion.
I have played quite a few MMO's and bought more expansions that I like to remember and don't remember any of them giving free time.

I think we all agree that we would like our servers merged, as has happened in the US
The US service has not Merged Servers, ever, and has no plan to do so.
We were offered free transfers from lower pop servers to higher pop servers, nothing more, nothing less.

I've played since Beta 2, no plans for a merge have ever been considered post launch.
The transfers make little sense if not followed by a merge. Usually a game will transfer people from full servers to dead ones if they are trying to save them. But to take low pop servers and let people transfer off, means servers that are even more dead, I think they started with the transfers to ease the eventual merge. My only question is will they wait till Christmas, hoping that enough people will join to breathe life back into the dead servers.
I think that they are dreaming if they do wait, but since release they have proven themselves very capable of dreaming ...
