As we watch so many MMO's coming out that are PVP based I can't help wondering why they are.
I have been a gamer since the early 80's and love the MMO concept, yet every MMO I play it will have say 20 servers that are PVE and 1 or 2 that are PVP and those servers are usually on medium or low load.
So why are there so many games being developed for such a small player base?
Math doesn't lie and the numbers are what they are.
I don't think the player base for PvP games is that small. Yes, you have PvE players and PvP players, but both groups are two small groups at the very end of each spectrum. Most people are somewhere in the middle and enjoy both PvE and PvP.
I don't know what games you are referring to, with the PvP servers. But from what I see and think: PvP servers are mostly non-consentual PvP servers, while PvE servers do have consentual PvP. And that's the heart of the matter. The average gamer wants to do both PvE and PvP, and they want to be able to chose what and how to play, and when. Not being forced to PvP or PvE. That's one of the reasons why FFA PvP games don't do so well if you look at subscriber numbers. Full loot games don't do well either, because if you lose your stuff, you're forced to PvE to get geared up again. It's all about the word 'forced'. The large majority doesn't want to be 'forced' into doing one or the other.
On another note: games that are purely PvE and don't have PvP at all (or very limited) don't do so well either. Again, the large majority wants to be able to do both.
Most games that are being developed have PvE and consentual PvP, with a handful servers that are FFA PvP for the small player base that wants it.
Originally posted by EvasiaOk at some point your right here, but compare UO to Darkfall is a little unjust to what Darkfall so much more have as a game to offer then UO.
But its a game that have alot more savety build in then most realise, its if you not that fragile a good game to play as pve or solo.
And ive stated enough that it is a hardcore pvp first, but with no radar, no names above head aligment system save main citys and huge world with no traking what so ever its very good playable for pve/crafters and that kind of players.
Again...How do you know what exactly it has to offer? And what built-in systems does it exactly have? You keep making general statements that no one can check or deny or confirm, and it makes it rather pointless to even start a discussion this way.
I might as well state the following: the game is like UO, just with updated graphics. Kind of like UO2 would have been if it weren't canceled. No one can argue with this statement at this point, because the official site only describes the game in very general terms, spiced up with marketing.
Unless you're a beta tester, you have just as much of information about the game than I do. Which is very limited.

At first you think this will be one big gankfest and no life for casuals and pve oriented players who dont like to pvp alot.
Yep, you're right. That's what I'm thinking. And I'm not even 'PvE oriented'.
Well this game is made for 70% pve why becouse your rather save in a pk oriented game sounds strange ain't it:P, nobody can track you down, they realy have to be up close to see who you are or what gear you have by looking at you and they cant see you on the map or some list where you are, no portal systems and main towns are rather save to be in town you can almost call them savezones guards will instantly kill you if you try kill another player.
So...People who don't like PvP will have to spend most of their time in small areas (towns) if they don't want to be ganked.
Also a alignment system in Darkfall, so again a savety featers to help pve players.
I don't know much about this system, so I can't comment on that. My question: what is this alignment system and how does it help?
Darkfall have alot of freedom to play whatever you want its a hardcore pve game for crafters, socializing casual pve solo play.
And on top of that: you only get to see the town if you're into crafting.
Dont wurry about lvls there none its skill based this game dont need to be played 24/7 to be uber its also not item based so no countless hours for farming or raiding for gear.
It's not level based, but you DO level your skills. In other words: inequality will be there, and those who play more will be at a huge advantage. It's the same as in UO. Someone who has maxed combat oriented skills will kick your but.
The core game is hardcore open pvp with full loot but your so very protected by many gameplay maganics its not so hard to play it for you pve oriented players.
Again. What mechanics and how do they help?
This game is to have FUN AGAIN for both equally PVE and PVE, dont listend to all thos pk gankers, they dont understand the game.
But you do? Did you play it yet?
I'm playing devil's advocate here, because I don't think it's going to help the game one bit to try and draw in tons of PvE players who don't like to PvP. In the end, the devs will probably cater to the majority (complaining about being ganked) and change the game vastly to get more subscribers. Same happened to UO. They introduced Trammel and from then on, the PvP was dead pretty much.
There are 3 stand alone games (that you can link together):
Prophecies
Factions
Nightfall
And 1 true expansion (where you need one of the stand alones to play it):
Eye of the North
Eye of the North will be the last one. They are working on Guild Wars 2 now.
In your opinion, what kind of gamer are you?
