I'm actually in the process of activating an account for shits-n-giggles until WAR comes out because I think AoC sucks... starting from scratch =)

I remember when EQ was THE MMORPG to play. Only the dedicated, hardcore, intelligent, fans of the fantasy genre were capable of playing EQ. Of course u had your newbs who would sit around EC, "East Commonlands" naked begging for money, and ask me, "the almighty Rallithon Oakthornn all sorts of questions about Druids and where to level....
EQ was the only real MMO I enjoyed more than any other MMO combined. I remember leveling up to 30ish with just a full set of regular leather armor. My first real good piece of loot was when a few buddies and I found the ogre king camp in I believe West Karana. He dropped a nice facemask early 30's level and those batskull earings. Back then, those were like the most L33T items you could get. Then came Guk. OMG, I spent levels 32-50ish in there. Then Lavastorm was the place to be.. Finally as Kunark came out, more and more awesome camps opened up and the game got 10x better.
Not only was the world of EQ incredible, but the community was also a huge reason for the game's success. Gm's would handle your petitions within a couple hours, even during primetime hours. Verant Interactive actually cared for it's customers,,,every single one of them.
Being a druid, I LOVED when ppl would randomly im me asking for a port to feerot, lava,CS,etc,,some would pay me 2-300 plat just for the ride. I loved how each class had it's own unique set of abilities and spells that no one else had.. These classes were very diverse and made the game that much more fun because of how unique they were. Then the Beastlord was introduced, and that totally screwed Shaman's and even druids,,,in a way.
I loved venturing out into the Western wastes and soloing/Kiting Dragons, and getting those dragonscale tunics that sold for like 30,000 plat,,which equaled around 280.00 of real life money at the time. Or camping Lodizal the Sea Turtle for 18-24 hours while someone else was camping Stormfeather. Even GM's would keep me company while I camped him.. When he'd finally spawn, all hell would break loose. It would take a good 20 minutes to get everyone there, buffed up and ready to go. Then we had to worry aobut another guild getting organized before us and beating me to it..Then when 2 shells would drop along with 2 belts, it was like hitting the lottery lol. Back then the belt and shield sold for 70,000plat, which equaled big bucks if you sold them online, lol. The great loot in EQ was soooo worth getting. I mean this is the loot u actually had to bust your butt and work hard to acquire. Nowadays with most games u can get really good loot without even trying,,,because the little moron kids dont understand how to work for things.
We will never have another game like EQ again. Vanguard was my last hope but SOE had to dumb the game down. Theres APW, but everything else is fairly easy to do with just one group..
As I sit here reminiscing about the good old days, it makes me sad because those days are long gone because these game companies want to make everything easy for single minded idiots. Since theres alot of gamers who happen to be stupid, these companies feel they must cater to them more than the old EQ vets like me,,,,the actual true hardcore fans of MMORPG's.
I'll drink to that one

I liked the part where he asked permission to say 'nigra' and got the response of 'it's kinda close'

Hardcores love the tedious, time wasting mechanics of old school MMOs, thank gawd most of the rest of us are sane and won't put up with that kind of crap anymore. Sadly, developers still pay too much attention to hardcore whiners on bulletin boards along with too many of them being hardcore themselves.
-Obviously... Sense of accomplishment... time + effort = reward? Put it in this light... if you worked one year to buy a dodge neon, or worked for five years to buy a corvette... which would be more fulfilling to an average person?
Diversity is a good thing, but it's becoming really irritating to see old schoolers coming into casual games and whining to developers to make the game more hardcore and make sure that the hardcore elements get rewarded better than any other play style. They've done this in WoW (original concept was little to no raiding with status rewards, not best rewards) and are really ramping it up in LOTRO (really starting to focus on adding raid content and yet again giving them the best rewards).
-Games have to cater to the end game to an extent, I don't know anyone who wants to hit max level, be finished, and then be forced to re-roll a new character just because they are out of content... which is exactly what you are promoting... that prevents game longevity
All of this crap about WoW being so easy is exactly that, crap. There is challenge in the game and it's not just from raiding. People die all the time, solo and in groups, that indicates challenge to me. Forced grouping does not indicate challenge. Death penalties do not add challenge.
-How about this... you said people die all the time... that does not indicate challenge, that indicates that people don't give a shit about dying because NOTHING bad happens when they die... I know personally it is easy to stay alive... I played a character from 1 to 60 in 12 days played pre-BC without dying... Take dying in EQ1 for example... if you died you had to worry about respawns therefore making it difficult to get back to your corpse, or losing the experience you worked hard to gain, or someone ganking you on your way to your corpse, or even someone taking over the camp that you failed to hold...
I'll be a very happy camper when a development team with real backbone, makes a casual game that caters only to casuals and actually makes casual playing the most rewarding and ignores all the hardcore whining.
-Casuals don't keep games alive... Players that stick with a game do...For example... If I work out once every two weeks or five days per week... after 25 sessions in the gym, who is going to be in better shape?... What you are saying here is that minimal effort should = maximal reward (welfare? lol)... I find that disgusting both in game and in real life...
A game that continued to amaze me past the first 40 levels... original EQ... Each new area involved more individual attention, better coordination, and classes playing their role to its fullest... Until post-Luclin... then it became a game that catered to the welfare gamers, a la WoW... those who want everything to be handed to them on a silver platter for no effort or intellect involved...
Would you rather see a game release pushed back a year or have the game release witha few bugs that will be fixed?
