So the best thing to do is to try them all.
although this is idealy the purpose of the games mechanics it simply is just not done, the leveling system is so tedious and pointlessly full of grind that getting on character to 37 then subbing it to level your main is basically the jist of how far any gamer with a life will get in this game. it takes days and weeks to get to the mid level, in all honesty i'd suggest a slightly newer game not that any are on the top of my head
I can't beleive I just read that. "It takes days and weeks to get to the mid level." How is that a bad thing? The grind is nearly not as bad as in other games. You get experience while partying, meeting new people. That is way better than killing mobs over and over by yourself, imo.
Also, to play a new job you just switch over to another job in your mog house. On the same character. No need to grind fame quests and such to play a new class like on WoW, since on FFXI it's still the same char.
I'm sorry but you are the stereotypical WoW player. Expecting everything to be easy.
But back on topic, check the stickies to learn up about the six basic jobs. All the party roles are there in there purest form.
Warrior is the early level tank, which means high party invites. Being a tank usually means the first person to die in a party.
Monks are DPS melee damage dealers in parties. Not too much skill to use them in low levels.
Thiefs are watered down versions of warriors for the first 15 levels until you get sneak attack. Then they put out high spike damage. Takes a little positioning to use them right, and since they pull there very depended on in parties.
White Mages heal. Therefore they get high invite rates, and high responsibility to go with it.
Black Mages are easy to use, at least in low levels. Use magic every so often while low levels. Be sure not to do so much it takes hate away from the tank.
Red Mages can heal a little, and they learn some black magic but you won't be using that in exp parties during low levels. You just start the battle of with Dia to debuff there defense and heal. You will most likely melee for the first levels of partying.
This just explained the Valkrum Dune levels. You should try all jobs in a party situation to see which you want to take to at least 30 to unlock advanced jobs, or maybe even all the way.
I think using Windower is fine, IF you only use if for playing Final Fantasy XI in a window. Some plugins are acceptable, if it just makes the game look better and such. But using plugins to let you see your allies TP and other things I consider cheating. Why? It gives PC players an edge over console players.
I do wish Square Enix can get an update done and done right the first time without immediate minor updates a day or so later. I have no personal experience's with this, but it seems to be all the rage on Allakhazam. >.> But also from what I heard, we (FFXI players) experience much less downtime than other MMO's.

And don't worry about "new" MMORPG by Square Enix, in most cases, they will suck so much that you won't even play. a Game release by SE doesn't mean its "world best"... it still can be crap...
Just because it was made by Square Enix doesn't mean it's most likely crap. No one ever said anything about World's Best either..
Glad to hear your liking it :P
For people who say the controls are bad, please read the manual. You can change the controls to whatever you feel comfortable with. Just because it has no skill trainers and such does not make it a bad game. I much prefer learning skills by level and spells by scrolls. The graphics are good when set to the max, by far not bad for an MMORPG. Especially considering it hasn't been updated graphics wise since 2002.
The interface is clunky when playing on PC, I'm not gonna lie. But it was designed for controllers when playing on consoles, and if you use one it feels just like RPG menus, which is nice considering it's a "Final Fantasy".
How did you discover MMORPG.COM?
