Latest Blog Entry - The Nux Saga - Chapter 1
From my blog Gaming Extravaganza! [Ponico]

Hello everyone,

As a musician, roleplayer, pvper and above all, a gamer. My biggest strenght is imagination and it’s the one tool that allowed me to do what I do today. This means, being the lead composer for a melodic death metal Band that’s about to release their CD, working in the gaming industry as a project coordinator and doing some maps and video editing on the side. As crazy as this may seem, all this life is all thanks to this crazy thing known as: Video Games. Of course, I had to go to school, spend a lot of time on a university chair and resist the urge to play and study…

One thing, I was enforced to learn at a very early age is that in order to conserve a strenght, you must keep training it. In my case, imagination is my main tool and strenght for everything I do, including managing a team of devs.

Wait, where did I learn to manage to a team?

By being a guild leader for several high profiled guilds in several games! (added with some university as a sideline :P)

“Trust me, leading a 200+ member guild for 2 years or more, quickly teaches you the fundamentals of leadership!”

One of my favorit past time in MMOs is Roleplaying. RP is not something that everyone loves but for me, it’s a good way to get involved in a community without relying on raids, dungeons, loots and PVP. Back in SWG, I used to be a hardcore Rper and most the characters that I created back there have stayed with me even today. Eventually, some of the old Rpers and I started to just write a few additional things about our characters and without even knowing it, we had a huge in our hands. So this is where I decided to take my characters out of SWG and make a whole new world just for them. As someone that uses his imagination as his primary tool, I have to keep training my mind everyday. Most of the time, I practice guitar and compose random rifts, other nights I give my little world some love and add a new chapter to it. Well in less then a year, I was able to write 30 chapters J

Since, I am not planning on releasing this as a book, I might as well share it with as many people as possible. Of course, the rights of this story are copyrighted to Project Versus and Societe Perdue production. (Just in case, I decide to do something with it J)

Hopefully, some of you will enjoy this story inspired by Rpers and MMORPGs.

THE NUX SAGA: BOOK 1

Prologue

Revolution has a cost, and the Terrans have paid it in full. Their civilization was finally united under one government, every important crime organization was destroyed, and their economy was about to stabilize.

Revolution has a cost, and it’s usually paid in lives.

Henry St. Louis was the last Terran to fight against this revolution. Some say that he was a criminal.  Others think that he had a vision.  But the reality is that both opinions were right. Henry started as a criminal and was rightfully accused for over 500 crimes.  But when Terra Fleet began their unification invasion, he believed that the revolution would destroy freedom. He tried to fight against Terra Fleet for over 15 years, but he eventually got caught and was executed for stealing military technology and kidnapping from the powerfull Nux themselves. However, the damage he had caused was big enough to cripple the Terra Fleet.

Henry and his men eventually managed to destroy the powerful Delta Strike team and other lesser operative strike teams. He also eradicated two planets of life with ancient nuclear warheads found on Earth. With enough patience and caution, Henry’s spies were able to infiltrate and destroy key elements of the fleet. But despite all his effort, the Fleet was always ahead of his plans and eventually made him flee the home systems. The man thought he could build a retaliation with the help of Alien technology, but he was no match for the Nux Civilization and its Sentinel Assassins. The Nux destroyed his fleet, his family, his bases and every accomplice that they could find within less then a year. This massive event gave the Terra Fleet the chance to give the “coup de grace” and finish their mission. With Henry out of their way, the fleet brought every Terran system to their knees and united them under one government.

Revolution has a cost and the Terrans paid the full price. Now that the civil war was over, the Terra Fleet was too weak to defend its home systems.  The Sraarka saw an opportunity and began an invasion shortly later. Terra Fleet was unable to hold the invaders back and quickly started to lose small systems in their galaxy.

Terra Fleet eventually fell…

With no allies to help and no major fleet to protect them, the darkest hour of the Terran history was about to be written.

Chapter 1: Terra Fleet Reborn

Inside the large halls of steel, an echoing voice whispered.

“3….2….1….Darkness…”

Darkness is a term that evokes fear and wonder in the heart of any person involved in the construction of a ship. It is during this moment where every circuit in the ship is shutdown for a minute to reboot the entire system to then bring every function online. During that moment, every crew member, every officer, and every pilot onboard is left to their fate.  If Darkness fails, the ship breaks into pieces and kills everyone. For one minute, the ship must survive space without collapsing in on itself.

At first, silence invades the ship.  But shortly after it is covered by the sounds of bending metal and friction. Some believe that this is when the ship speaks to its crew for the first time. It has often been compared to the singing of a whale. Once the ship has done her first chant, the AI comes to life and starts booting up every systems. A moment later, every deck, room and system lights up and gives life to the ship. This was the birth of the capital mothership Alpha Century. As a final and desperate move, the Terran Civilization had put all their efforts together in order to rebuild the Terra Fleet.

“Madame, the Alpha Century is now operational. The voice coms are open, and we are waiting for your word.” Gently said an officer.

In the middle of the bridge stood a beautiful, young lady. She was wearing a pair of military boots with an elegant skirt that stopped at her knees. To keep things a bit more military, she had a standard-issue, white blouse with a few medals pined on the left side of her chest, her red hair was tied behind her back. “Just enough make-up to catch the eye!” was her moto, and today was no exception. Her beautiful, blue eyes were staring at the emptiness of space, but she was quickly distracted by the officer whispering in her ear.

“Madame, are you alright?” Asked the officer.

“Oh! Yes. Yes! I guess it’s just a lot to take in one day you know?” Replied the lady.

“Madame, if this can make you feel better, we all voted for you.  Everyone in this fleet has declared their loyalty to you. We trust you.” Said the officer.

The lady tried not to blush too much and heartily replied: “Well, as your supreme commander, I order you to call this madame Lysianna when we are on the bridge. That goes for all of you!”

“Uh, Lysianna… The coms are open.” Shyly said the officer.

“Oh.. uh.. Yes! That’s right everyone, if you visit the bridge, please feel free to call me by my name!” said Lysianna as her face turned pink. She could now hear people laughing all over the ship.

Lysianna was young and looked younger then any high ranked officer on her bridge.  Her rebel looks didn’t help her case either, but for some unexplained reason, no one cared. People seemed to love her like that.

She quickly cleared her voice and began her speech.

“Today is the day where our Fleet is reborn from the ashes. As you may have learned today, I have been voted by you to be the supreme commander of the Terra Fleet. I don’t know where to start but… I hope that I am the person you expect. Terra Fleet is not the only fleet in our civilization, but it is the most advanced and powerful fleet ever assembled. It is the fist of our great civilization, and our mission is to defend it. I hope that you are ready for the task, because we are still outmatched in every sense of the word. But if we give it all we’ve got, we will be victorious.  I do not expect everyone to understand my decisions or even agree with them, but I need everyone to trust me. Terra Fleet operates on its own and follows its own path to preserve the Terran Civilization.

“Like my mother once told me, in order to be strong, we need allies.  And I believe that it is time that we open our eyes and welcome friends in the galaxy. We will not survive much longer without the help of other great civilizations. This is our prime objective, and I want everyone to keep their focus on this long-term goal. Our survival depends on it.

“Thank you everyone, I will do my best for you. Now please take five and then get ready for our hyper jump.  It’s time to meet our fleet and then kick some Sraarka ass!”

If space could transport sound around the universe, it would have transported a wave of handclapping. Everyone in the fleet was cheering at the simple yet effective speech.

Minutes later, the mothership began her maiden hyper jump and quickly flew off. Hours later she appeared a few kilometers away from her fleet, where more then 500 assault ships, carriers, capital ships and battlecruisers waited for their supreme commander to arrive. A few checks and instructions were sent to each ship before the preparation of another hyper jump.

    • To the people complaining about the community
    • We're in the ERA of spoiled people. Everything is easy, so much that you don't even have to leave home to get your favorit games. Most of them can be downloaded while your eating dinner and I'm not talking illegal Torrent copies.

So you get the standard screaming and whinning from these people and the more calm and serene people tend to just ignore it. Once in a while, they will add their word of wisedom but when a fire starts, it often takes more then a bucket of water.

MMORGP is a good forum, no need to look elsewhere really. Seriously, unless you're in a very private forum, you'll see all sorts of post and that's true in any community... IRC... Forums... 90s BBS chats... you name it!

    • Ok, enough - I am turning my back on MMORPG.com, it has degenerated too far

Look at the number of post you have and look at the adverage. While you don’t have all that much, you still have quite a lot of post since your first day here. You might want to step back and look things from a different perceptive. The community hasn’t changed since day 1 and I strongly think that it’s still a decent one.

Also what you might not understand or know is that many MANY people on this forums are actual game devs and such. They won’t scream it but you would be surprise. Giving your opinion is great, it doesn’t mean you have to give it everytime you feel like it. I see tons of people talking about Kotor, WOW and SWG… You don’t see me posting in there and tryng to give my 2 cent that EVE dominates those games. I simply skip and move on to another topic.

    • Top 5: MMORPG Moments
    •

      1. Mankind Online:
I had no idea what an MMO was, all I heard was that this game had no limit on Multiplayer. Finishing and scrimming with my clan on Homeworld, Mankind looked like the perfect evolution for my friends and I. We travelled in our little ship for over 2 nights before finding our own system. Building and populating this system was an extremely rewarding moment. What start as 5 little ships flying around space ended up with over 30K ships and carriers ready to tear appart any enemie in sight.

      2. Star wars Galaxy:
Starting up as a small guild to one day become the most dominating guild on our server. My best moment however was when we were just a bunch of friends living in a little village and killing people in Theed. We also had entire nights where we were trap in our guild hall unable to go outside because of a plain cat hunter hahaha…

      3. Earth and Beyond:
I was part of the community since the beginning. A loyal CNC fan and a Loyal Westwood fan. The very first day I entered the game world and actually meeting these devs and community managers at the earth station was really cool. Westwood knew how to make you feel part of a community.

      4. EVE Online:
Well, although I do play a new character these days, I was there when the great wars between all the major alliances occurred. I don’t think I’ll ever see something as massive as this now. Today, we have goonfleet taking over but seriously, it doesn’t compare to the great war we had in the past.

      5. RTCW: TWL BETA
While not an MMO, it’s important to see that our community was as efficient if not as big as an MMO. Instead of meeting in a city, we all gathered on IRC and then went in a game together. Anyway, playing the most important game in a season while your game is diffused live on WOLFTV and shoutcasted by Warwitch is quite cool.

    • Why play Maplestory?
    •

      Oh LawLz

      Ok so here’s the deal.

Maplestory is a sidescroller MMO that can also be played in the comfort of your sofa with a good Gamepad in your hands and such. It’s action and twitch oriented and the amount of things you can do in this game is pretty insane but it’s no walk in the part. The grapics are not 3D but good old school pixel. They are superior to what Super Nintendo had but obviously, they do not compare to let’s say Crysis.

      Maplestory:

You grind a lot but it’s pretty fun with some friends and if you do have a sense of humour and a bit of patience, then you’ll have a blast.

The class system is pretty good but like many Korean MMO, if you screw up your template then well…. Start over!

I personaly like the music and the ambiance of this game. I don’t mind cute and childish things.

The weapons, spells, skills and other core mechanisc are well done.

Overall, Maplestory is a fun game and will likely please a younger crowd but if you want something light hearted and interesting to play, you won’t hate this one.

Now, just so you see who you’re dealing with. I’m not your little happy camper guy with a white hat, I’m the tall guy with long hair, that listens to Canibal Corpse, Decapitated, Cryptopsy with the occasional Lamb of God and Slayer. I enjoy fragging people on Quake and I’m usually into hardcore PVP.

Yet.. I enjoy taking the dog to the park with my GF, I enjoy classical music and went to the last Loreena Mckenitt show. I collect wines and love cheese and finaly, I really enjoy Maplestory.

So take it like that… Comparing 3D graphics with 2D handdrawn and sprites is like comparing a Sports car with an F-22 Raptor. Both are amazing, both are for different purposes, both can be enjoyed.

      Enjoy!

Laughing at people that are doing an efforts to start at the bottom of the ladder is downright unprofessional. Many years ago, I started as a game tester, then eventually became a lead tester, QA coordinator, Senior porting coordinator and etc...

The great thing is, each time I take on a new role, I have all the background and knowledge to support my new role.

I myself applied to do some work for this site. :P
