As a heads-up, JGE isn't even in closed beta yet. NetDevil and Codemasters are still working on alpha build after alpha build until they're happy to start the first waves of closed beta.
You raise a relevant point though (as a consumer). NetDevil are resolute that open beta will be for marketing and not a lot more. Too many games these days are rushed out of the door unfinished and unpolished (AoC?) or use a large, bug-riddled beta as a tool for testing their product (TR?). The ND folks really don't want to do that for the sole reason that, as you say, nothing's worse than wasting time on crap - and if that crap is being played by thousands of disgruntled gamers before the product even goes gold then you have a problem.
And here's the final product, folks:

Posted today on the JGE Facebook page here. Looks pretty cool and action-packed to me, even if it's missing some good old Quantar green.
Well, I played for a week a year or so back - just after the trial started, and I liked the game but never really got into it.
So I downloaded the client and grabbed an account on Saturday and had a play. Then played Sunday, with my wife who sqeuaked "ooooh, sounds interesting" when I told her about the freeform mechanics. Then Monday. Aaaaand again last night.
I love it - but then I love sandbox games and am most definitely not put off by an open universe where you can choose to do whatever you want to do. I'm primarily a sci-fi fan, so loved Star Wars Galaxies in the early days and am eagerly awaiting Jumpgate Evolution but SoR most definitely fills a void in my gaming life.
It has its problems and there are plenty of things I'd love to see addressed but they're all little, niggling things not game breakers. The community is quite simply one of the best I've experienced in many, many years of online gaming. My wife's character had an apartment bought for her yesterday when she headed off to the mainland and I've had numerous discussions with people about roleplaying, guilds, game mechanics and more - all friendly and approachable. As it stands, my wife's character is enjoying crafting and foraging and I'm bolstering my fighting and magical skills in order to survive exploring the main land (and gather materials for the other half). Strangely, in SWG she was the Master Tailor and I was the Master Bio Engineer...
So, new publisher/developer, you have two guaranteed subscriptions here. The only thing that concerns me is how stupid I've been to miss this little gem before.
That goes for people with guaranteed beta slots as well. If you picked up a key at Connect '08 for example, or have won a slot in a competition, you still need to register a Code M account and submit your details using the beta application form.
See you in space!

Our squad from Jumpgate Evolution's predecessor is already contacting and recruiting its former pilots. We're looking forward to bringing our unique kind of sociopathic religious zealotry to this new universe.
As our squad leader once said: "The voice of the Skein is perfectly clear to the superior mind, which explains why Octs and Sols can't hear it."
