Depends what you're after.
WW2OL is an old game. The graphics are dated, controls on the infantry are somewhat clunky, some people have difficulty getting it to run smoothly on even the most modern rigs. If you want a game that has gorgeous graphics, a complete leveling system with PvE action then this ain't your game.
However if you want totally unforgiving combat, engagement ranges out to a few kilometers, historical setting, at prime time large battles all across the front, a definite end goal for each campaign then it might be for you.
I've played Planetside for a total of about 2 months but it didn't hold my interest. Being someone who's always liked simulations I prefer the attempted realism you get in WW2OL. I guess that's the main thing to remember, it's aiming for realism so if you get hit, you're dead, ergo don't get hit. This makes for some great combat and when the tanks are rolling, MGs firing, bombs raining down - it's all very intense. Think the holding the bridge scene toward the end of Saving Private Ryan, a lot of fighting in WW2OL is kinda like that. You can play FPS infantry, do para drops, drive tanks & anti tank guns, be a bomber or fighter pilot and to a lesser extent join the navy.
In the end it's still unique as far as MMOL games go and I still get a buzz playing it. It's a little rough around the edges but there's nothing like picking off a guy running in the open at 200 meters. Bang and you know he just went black screen, probably didn't even hear the shot ![]()
Check this thread for a bunch of youtube vids shot by one of the devs during a battle late last year. Since then we've had an update and most the sounds have been redone but they'll still give you an idea of what the fighting is like.

Anyway if you're into WW2 sims and want to play a game where the skill of the player and therefore your enemy means everything then you'll probably like it.
Good luck.
The graphics are adequate and do not spoil the experience for me in the slightest. More importantly there is nothing at all on the market that comes close to what you can do and experience in WW2OL and as I've seen time and again, beautiful graphics are not what makes a game great.
The gaming community should be happy to see at least one dev team doing there own thing and producing something other than yet another fantasy world derivative MMO game.
