My two cents on AO:
It had a great story line. The character classes and technologies were original and fun. The in game society was pretty cool. I recall several nights of streaming music from rubika radio and street dances with live DJs.
What killed it for me (mind you I haven't played in a few years now)
server instability, downtime lag etc. I read earlier in this post this appears to be fixed?
The main kicker was that the fighting sequence was REALLY boring to me( PVM that is). There was very little interaction you basically targeted a monster and sat there, it either died or you did. In addition you had to deal with idiots who brought train loads of mobs through the dungeons just because they only wanted to fight in a specific area. (although you have to deal with this in many mmorpgs)
If you did pay to play and could no longer afford to pay for a few months you had to start all over as a froob (couldn't continue using your characters on paid account)
