    • Open-Ended MMOs vs. MMO based on a Quest System
    • How do you feel about MMOs with more open-ended character progression (think Asheron's Call, EVE, SWG) versus MMOs based on a quest system (think WoW, AO, CoH) for character progression? What are the pros and cons of each? For example, on one hand a quest system gives direction and keeps things moving forward, but the progression is almost linear.  Games without a quest system give more freedom but might be too open-ended or may become repetitive over time.  Please feel free to give me some input on your opinions of each and which you prefer.  Thanks for your time and consideration!

    • is it just me?
    • I have this same problem.  I hate reporting to an NPC and having him say, "Go kill 10x/collect 10x/report to x/bring me x."  I played AC for a long, long time, and I loved the approach that it took to progression.  There was no linear direction; from the time you first entered the game world, where you went, what you hunted, the quests you did, etc., was entirely case-specific.  Sure, there were some places that were popular spots for certain level ranges, but there was also a nearly infinite number of other options.  One of the joys of the game was to find a place to level that was relatively unknown.

Since I left AC, I've found that the MMOs I play are based on linear questing and a "quest system."  It seems like an easy way to develop games and an easy way to give the games more mass appeal.  But for me, it takes away the freedom of the sandbox experience.  Sometimes I wish I didn't have the perspective of Asheron's Call, so I wouldn't be so bored by other games.

    • Well, looks good, what do you think?
    • This game sounds pretty intriguing.  I played Asheron's Call Darktide, and haven't been able to find another game that will hold my attention for more than a few months (CoH, WoW, EQ2, FFXII).  This looks pretty promising, though.  Open PVP, when done right (Asheron's Call DT is my bench mark here, and rightfully so), makes for my favorite type of MMO gameplay.  Skill-based advancement? Gimme.  Player looting? Yes please.  Love it.  The idea that a player can drop ALL of his belongings on death makes it even more appealing.  Player-run economy sounds great.  Definitely gonna follow this one's development.

Feels good to be excited about a game for the first time since I left Darktide.
