Backlash is a really cool mechanic. You have to weigh the options of whether to keep casting and hope for the extra damage or use meltdown and keep yourself safe.
I killed myself a couple of times taking chances in RVR but if your dieing in pve... you're just not paying attention or something.
One of my buddies played it at 1920x1080 on his 42" tv so I know thats supported.
Well as usual this site is full of trolls vs. fanbois. I'll try and give an unbiased review of my admittedly limited play experience during the preview weekend.
First off let say that I had been looking forward to this game for quite sometime, DAoC was amazing and I was super stoked to get to play WAR. I'll sum it up in catagories as it's easier for me to do it that way.
Graphics-
The graphics were better than what I expected to see. I'm used to seeing screenshots for games and then once you get into the game realizing it was really... really touched up. The graphics looked better than the majority of the screens I have seen on the website and that was refreshing. I keep hearing the rumor that the final gfx system isn't implemented yet so only room for improvement I suppose. So for people that say it looks like WoW I'd have to say that while artisically it's similar... it doesn't look cartoony one bit.
Public quests-
I played as a bright wizard so my view on these may be skewed. I absolutely loved them. Being able to just walk into a zone and fight a quest with a whole lot of random people is pretty sweet, and I can't believe it's never been done before. I liked how even if I did the most damage I didn't necessarily win the top prize... or even one at all. It gives everyone a chance at loot... which is quite refreshing. For people complainging that you can't solo them.... I think thats the point....
Animations-
Wow big miss for the team. They are really quite poor. I don't know if it's server or client optimization but effects and animations are going off all over the place, and never seem quite "together". I also can't ever seem to launch successive spells w/o hearing this ability is not yet ready even if it is. That infuriated me to no end. I hear it's quite bad on the melee side as well. This needs to be addressed now, as I feel it makes combat feel slower than it should be.
AI-
The AI is the status quo everyone is used to. Nothing that impressive here, but pathfinding needs to work yesterday.
Performance-
It ran pretty well on my e6400, 8800gts 320 and 3 gigs of ram. Lag was a problem at times which causes synchro problems, but past that it was definately good.
PVP-
Now to the meat and potatoes of the game. I didn't get to do much open field rvr as destruction just camped outisde of the town but I did get to play the scenarios and found them to be very enjoyable. I guess I'm on the outside as far as my opinion on this goes, but I like that fact that there isn't a ton of CC. I'm a mage if a huge orc runs up to me I expect to be cut down.... hes 5 times my size and wants my head... he should have it. I really like the scenarios in the human starting area, however thehigh elf one with the big nuke that goes off is annoying. In my experience somehow destruction just owns everytime and every minute I'm running from the big explosion. It's annoying.
Class Balance-
In my play I didn't really notice any particularly over the top weak or powerful classes. Some people would complain about getting aoe'd to hell and back by bright wizards, but if you're dumb enough to stand all packed together and let me rain death then that's your own fault. Like I said before I haven't seen much cc so the tides change quickly depending on quite a few factors.
I've seen zergs get pushed back by half the people just because they were smarter players, and I've seen the zerg run over me. It all depends on the situation and who you have with you.
Overall I really enjoyed the preview weekend. A friend of mine who was on the AoC train for awhile and plays WoW was really impressed and decided to go ahead and pre-order as well. I'm definately gonna pick it up when it releases and can't wait to see destruction on the field. Any questions, comments, criticisms welcome.
No clue, alls I know is that I bought the pre-order yesterdat, and was invited to the preview weekend today.
