The only demo available at the moment can only be downloaded through xbox live, aside from showing how the game was when it started, its also a great example of why this game needs a monthly fee. If you feel like giving it a try on the xbox demo, I'll be glad to give you a guided tour, just drop me a line.
In my opinion, $10.00 USD a month is not too much a fee to keep the most unsavory elements out of the game's servers (see xbox demo servers). How would you suggest for Sega to make money of this game if they were not to charge a monthly subscription?

The Secret Lives of Mobs comic has something to say on this issue
The demo is only good for getting rare room decorations and/or weapons during the endorsed demo weekends

If you are on the PS2/PC server, Uni2 has 4 stars at peak times; if you're on the 360, I believe Uni 1-3 are full at peak times (I may be wrong about this, since I'm on PC.)
I'd recommend coming back and trying it out if you are considering returning.
P.S. Xbox server have universes 1-4 full at peak times on weekends and universe 1-2 full during the weekdays.
