Cause I somehow feel that instead of discussing the issues of exploiting etc. it's just another one of those "look what SOE did again, to the fire with them!" etc.
Thanks for the reply.
"Cause what I feel..."
Which I think might well be the problem. I am trying to look at all this objectively. I'll try to explain what I mean by that.
To be fair, this thread is not about "cheating in all MMO's" nor have I stated that EQ2 is in and of itself a worse game than any other out there (in fact, I believe I stated that IMO it is the best game of its kind). To your point, I've never denied nor alleged that such cheating may go on in any other game, because I have no allegation nor evidence of it. The reason for that being I don't pay to play other games. I pay to play EQ2. This thread (as unfortunate as the title is) is about EQ2 in particular and now about the alleged cheating actions of a developer. Being a paying customer of SOE, this affects me and as it falls within the purview of this thread and within the rules of this site, it is appropriate to discuss it here.
It is not a gray issue. Cheating is wrong. It does not matter how many others are doing it, or where. Situations in other places does nothing in the least to change the fact that cheating in a game, especially one in which people pay money with the expectation of fairness is, in and of itself, wrong.
Most of the rest of it is just obfuscation.

Stay away from EQ2 for these reasons? Hell no :) Not valid enough...
Actually, he first alerted them to the exploit, and then told them that they could use it to get their epics, and that when they do, he would "look the other way".
It is a little deeper than just "ignoring issues". It goes much deeper than just not doing ones jog.
To be clear, I've never encouraged people not to play EQ2. For the record, I am not the OP here.
Simply, based on what happened this past December, and what has been revealed now, it is important that this information again gets out so that people can be informed when they do choose to put a large portion of their free time into a game that does not have a level playing field, nor the same opportunities, for all players.
Everyone can make up their own mind.
One thing never changes, however, no matter what your age.
Cheating in a game is wrong.
There are no excuses for it.
No offense meant zspawn, but that kind of blase' attitude when it comes to cheating and what is right and wrong really makes me feel... old.

Actually, you are at least one allegation behind the rest of us.
The information I pointed to does not deal with a strategy given to a guild, in order that they then be able to honestly beat an encounter.
The information I pointed to is evidence of a developer taking a bug report, passing the existence of that exploit on to his own guild so that they might exploit it, and then promising that while they do, he would "look the other way" so that they could get their epics.
A dev passing on strategy to his guild = perhaps a bad idea due to now knowing where he got the info.
A dev passing a bug report to his guild and promising that if they exploit it, he will "look the other way" = cheating.
Plain and simple.
And, in case you are not sure, cheating is always wrong, m'kay? ![]()
