I remember a lot of posts like this from back in the day. Well written, truthful, and completely useless as far as SOE was concerned. I did not bother to post back then. It was quite obvious that the NGE was going to happen no matter what anyone said or how many people quit.
I have gone back to try the game from time to time. I understand that on occasion a game will need to change in order to grow. Sadly this change has had the opposite effect. The few times I have gone back it reminds me of one of those mirrors you would see in a fun house at a carnival. You recognize the image but it is so distorted and changed that it is laughable.
Personally I do not want the old SWG back and I have no desire for this version of it either. All the time and money that was invested in to the CU and NGE could have and should have been used to actually fix the bug ridden mess that we started with instead of starting all over again with a new and improved bug ridden mess. This level of incompetence is an SOE trademark though.
It is a good solution GH. I would just add that regulations regarding EULA's might make consumer exploitation more challenging for unethical companies. Why aren't you regularly ripped off by your satellite t.v. service provider? The industry is highly regulated to prevent this. Does still happen? I imagine so, but thieves generally prefer an easy target, and the MMO consumer is more vulnerable than others it would appear.
I understand where you are coming from. I really do. I just think that the only time that SOE did anything that was even close to being considered illegal was when they advertised items in ToOW that they knew were not going to be in the game. They did offer refunds though so that pretty much ended that. We all know that SOE would not have offered refunds if their lawyer believed that they had done nothing wrong. Customer satisfaction has never been one of SOE's major concerns and giving back money is not something any company ever wants to do.
Things like the NGE do not seem to happen on a regular basis. Yes games change quite often but nothing to the extent of the NGE. Any developer that would even be tempted to try it now knows how badly it can go for them. Honestly it would just not be worth the risk even for a failing game.
I really believe that the message that was sent to developers was heard. We did it as gamers and it was as easy as hitting the cancel button. There was no need for lawyers or court rooms. A few hundred thousand people made their opinions known by simply walking away.
In the end SWG and the NGE will be an interesting side note in the history of online gaming. A what not to do to your game and your customers. A lesson learned through the loss of customers and profit. Going through the courts just takes far to long. Hitting the cancel button brings immediate and very satisfying results. I do so love instant gratification.
I would not want a new SW MMO to be anything like SWG no matter what version of it we are talking about. Those days are gone and I am ready for something new and innovative.

MMO's are ever evolving for better or worse, it does say, when you log in that the game experience may change during online play. EVERY online game says that. if you can't accept it, then you don't need to be playing online games.
that one single line is enough to throw out any case against them, it doesn't have to be in the eula..
I have the original box sitting right in front of me, and on the FRONT COVER, it says in clear bold english
"Game Experience May Change During Online Play"
sorry if you don't like the way it turned out but it is their game not yours, no one forced you to buy it, no one forced you to continue playing it.
I mean seriously, how moronic can you be.
For the thousandth time, this phrase has to do with the ESRB rating, not the game itself. It is impossible to give a correct rating to an MMO with real people controlling the characters and their actions. This phrase covers the ESRB requirement and NOTHING ELSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The really sad part of this whole thread and the many threads that have been started before it and that will surely come after is that people just keep repeating the same exact thing. You can explain the ESRB rating thing a thousand more times and it will not change anything. The ignorance people display on these forums is frightening at times.
If the NGE was legal or not really just does not concern me. What was done is done. SOE's reputation as incompetent hacks was solidified with SWG. If someone did sue SOE and won what would it really change in the industry? Nothing at all and everyone knows it. The MMO companies would just rephrase their ULA and the battle of lawyers would go on forever.
The only real power that gamers have is to just stop paying and supporting companies like SOE. Thats really all we can do and it is the most effective and realistic approach to the problem.

this is why i hate $OE ea micro$oft nintendo and the other ilk. none of them care about us gamers and rather they care about making money.
ea has ripped people off time and time again. and turns everything they get their hands on into some madden/sims clone.
$OE do i even need to say anything?
micro$oft up's the price of their xbox titles and their new system breaks down ever 2 months.
nintendo just got way too kiddie.
and i look around at new mmo's coming out and all of them are the same. oh yeah age of conan has blood and naked people yay i can see all the 14 year olds flocking to that game. a game that at one time was going to be a hardcore sandbox pvp game. same with warhammer. same with alot of mmo's as now everyone wants to be the new warcraft.
and still i would bet good money that all of them are planning their own nge's their own ways of upsetting the players to go after the warcraft people.
it is time for those making the games to make the games the way we the players want them. if we say we want pre-cu we should get pre-cu. if we say don't nerf something then it shouldn't be nerfed. the devs work for us we don't work for them and it is time they understand that.
and they will once swg rolls back or shuts down.
Yeah because they're in business to loose money, thats for sure.
Build a good game and the people wll come. Build a crappy game and all you'll get is some people playing it because it's the only Star Wars MMO.
You'll never have a "blockbuster" MMO without making a quality product.
Or you can take the SOE approach and just buy a bunch of failing games for dirt cheap and put them on your station (life support) pass. Quanity over quality.
