Unfortunately professional reviewers are that profesional reviewers. They have a large number of games released each month that they have review. Playing a game, setting up an intelligent commentary and getting it out so it's still news leaves little actual playing time. The most you can hope for in most games is a gemeral flavour of the game. Not a total experience.
This unfortunately doesn't work for MMOs. Most MMOs have a lengthy story line. The also have so called end game content. These things cannot be completely experienced in the short time a reviewer has before he hits his press deadline. So if the game has a great/good beginners area, and some decent begginers quests (like Tortage) it will get by most critics.
Read the reviews on EQ2. By no means were most players happy with it out of the gate. SWG was a solid game destroyed by an expansion/patch.
Come on how many people actually used active blocking. The risks way out weighed the gain. With so called "White" damage outstripping combo damage, the idea of putting a hole in you armor was usless.
If you knew the class you were facing, and knew the combos fired off and knew the timers for said combo, you could do an educated guess on blocking. I just don't think it made a big enough difference to do it.
Funny how they mention 800K units sold and 400K subscribers at the Q2 report but won't talk about subscriber base now.
"...It's the same reason nobody else does it. You know it's because of market inplace, the competition scene or whatever you want to call it. That's pretty much the reason.
But I think Funcom did something unique the other day when we went out and said we had over four hundred thousand active players. Not too many companies do that. And I am glad we did. It's a very very solid number. We are really happy with it...."
Doesn't he contradict himself with this statement alone?
So if they are happy with 400K and losing 1/2 of the original purchasers, what is their active player base now? Because they won't release the numbers must mean they are no longer happy?
Edit: I don't know which is worse my spelling or my typing.
To Avery and Bloodworth:
This is a good interview, if only it had happened 2 months ago. Really a sense of direction might haved saved my sub not statements like "AoC is steak" and "We had a great release".
As for the forum posts not being deleted, did you actually visit the forums for the first two months? Reasonable posts early on were quickly closed and deleted. Soon after Funcom started banning people for negative posts. It's not till just recently has Funcom been overwhelmed and stopped the Nazism.
