When you have funnel zoneing you get people that are always there waiting for you to pop through. Immunity time or not. It makes no difference. They'll chase you and kill you. On top of that the instance hopping is silly.

It is my belief that open pvp should be left to large world sandbox MMOs. Smaller zone based MMOs should probably stay clear, but I haven't played yet so I won't know for sure.

I'll try the open pvp, but more then likely it'll be a struggle just to have some fun. Mini-games and borderlands will most likely be enough to satisfy my pvp urges.

In WOW I was on a pvp server and it really didn't make any difference. It just meant you might always have someone 2x your level waiting for you to fight a mob. It really wasn't fun or of any challenge. It was just annoying. The game was to small for open pvp and funnels you to too common areas. Same issue with AoC.

I don't know why you keep refering WoW as having funnel zoning when it is clearly seamless. The exit/entrance isn't in one spot, you can enter by jumping off mountain, waterfalls, open border, swimming across and intersections. Also in burning crusade you can use flying mounts to fly pretty much over anything in outlands and across zones by flying over mountains and cities. You have obviously never played WoW or atleast past free trial. I don't even like WoW but I hate it when people make ignorant comments about another game.

I've played it to 60.. twice. It's tunnel zoneing. You obviously don't know how it works. So keep quiet.

It doesn't matter where the zone line is. It doesn't even matter where it places you on the other side of the zone line. That's all done with math. There is a trigger border around every zone line. You hit it before you hit the zone line and at that time you begin downloading the data gradually. By time you hit the zone line. You've finished downloading. The distance is HUGE at which you start downloading the data as to accommodate for slower machines, but even then some of the slower ones still have a glitch at the zone line. The degraded quality of the game allows for this. Try it on a game like AoC and it'll fail miserably unless the quality is degraded. The data is to large to stream it over time. They should still do it anyway to reduce load times, but then again if you hit a trigger you'll take an FPS hit in this type of game and that's not good if you don't intend to actually zone.

Sorry Kyle your wrong. Zoning yes is an issue where you have a loading screen BUT your not being tunneled your not forced to zone in only a narrow area. In WoW outdoors you could zone on any part of the zone map. A tunnel zoneing is when your forced into a bottle neck or tunnel your area is very limited and hence can be predictable. A classic example of tunnel zoning is entering White sands everytime you enter whitesands you arrive in front of the row boat.

This means that an ambusher can wait for you at the rowboat and kill you every single time you zone in at that point. Another classic spot of contention is the ress points as you revive at the nearest one everytime. This are tunnels with only one entrance and only one exit.

A non tunnel zone example is seen often in wow outdoors area where anywhere along the line can be used to enter or exit the zone. This wide area makes it a lot harder for someone to camp you and hit you on entrance (just avoid the roads).

    • Slightly unbiased review from an old closed-beta-tester.
    • All reviews made by a Beta only person should be taken with a grain of salt. Declaring that Beta shows you the state of the game for release is much like looking at a Ford after its been crash tested and saying hmmmm that looks broken be that means ALL Ford cars are broken all of the time... and not realising that its broken because they were crash testing it.

Declaring that ALL the players who are reporting how much fun, how smooth the graphics are as fanbois is to be honest poppycock.

Someone who played a game and found they did not like it are not going to give a unbiased opinion much like someone who played it and liked it also won't be able to give a unbiased opinion.

      but hey I will try <grin> :-

When you start AoC your starting point is a solo area setup just for you its your intial mission to get to the city. This is all part of a bigger plot which will unfold as you level.  Your first 20 levels are spent in this island where you are basically shown the ropes and allowed to deal with quests and meet people in a enclosed area. Your first 20 levels make you feel rather driven as your option are limited. BUT and heres the kicker once you finish with the island and enter the world of AoC things change.

Now your in your home city and you basically have the run of the world to determine what you want to do. Much like EQ2 zones are definite level feel you can enter a zone and know your in over your head fairly quickly.

Lastly I can only speak from a lvl 1 - 30ish as thats the maximum level I have reached. But there are seemingly no limit to quests you can do. Graphics wise the game is spectacular they do have a few small graphical glitches (sometimes textures take a while to load) and yes the zoning screens can annoy if there are issues but normally they are very quick. Your avatar looks good ... very good they seem to have managed to actually get muscle tone to move in a realistic fashion when he moves.

My only concern is atm leveling seems almost to fast so there may not be the longetivity that this genre of game usually posses but then as I said before I only reaqched lvl 30ish so far.

      Do I recommend it yes

      Keep dreaming.

This was tried in UO too.

Heck, the Anti-PK guilds proclaimed proudly that non PK's were safe, and that the PK'ers would never get anywhere...

Well, PK'ers outnumbered tha Anti about 10 to 1, and quite a few players of UO that left in disgust(And there were many enough of those to warrant the trammel divide) didn't even get to see the world outaside the cities.

The cities in UO was constantly surrounded by PK'ers, while the anti PK'ers(whom have very rose coloured glasses these days) could only maintain a presense 2-3 hours a day....

so keep dreaming... No rules = anarchy... It's been proven over and over again, and everytime someone repeats the mistake, rose colored glassed "veterans" and gank hungry PK'ers try to paint the game as a place where everyone holds hand and sing "kombaya".

I agree, lol hecne why I avoid FFA-PVP servers like the plague. I'm still suffering from shellshock from the failed experiment called UO.

That said people asked for a FFA server and they got what they asked for I was just giving the raving lunatics some advice for how they can police it themselves if they so choose. Remember atm the PVP crowd are still trying to claim that the gankers are a minority. If that is the case then my soloution has merit...

Check the forums there are unofficial RP-PVE servers.

Also AoC has had a new type of PvP server added which seems to be cultural based (i.e. race wars)
