    • We still want Star Ship INTERIORS and Player / Guild Owned Ships!!!
    • The game is 3 years off at best. I'm sure many more developments will happen. Will this be another SWG (pre-nge) or Tabuala Rasa? I'm hoping for SWG done better. But that is me. They (Cryptic) seems to be listening, because right now they have to listen. How long until they reach the "We know best" stage is anyone's guess.

I hope STO can be the sandbox game we are all dreaming of, but reality never measures up to fantasy.

I will say Cryptic has already given us an infinate more material, video, screens shots and detailed descriptions than perpetual ever gave anyone.

    • Unfortunately this seems to be the norm in today's network centric software delivery system. Write incomplete code today for an update on Tuesday. While none of us will REALLY know what went on behind the scenes. EA/Mythic announced this today knowing full well they will loose a percentage of their potential customer base to WoW or Lotro. While I personally would not have played this game ever. It's par for the course on most online game development these days to over promise and under deliver. AoC has really made alot of people hesitant to put down any money for a new mmo. They have single handedly damaged any launch with a hint of not delivering on what was promised, and Mythic just said they would cut a large section of the core game out. I would not want to be in that office today.

    • I love SOE
    • This has been one of the most entertaining flames wars I have ever read, SOE elitists such strong emotions on both sides of the fence. I’ll just fan the flames a little more.

I was there through the CU, CU2 and NGE for SWG. Say that 5 times fast.  The NGE did destroy the game. I did not play it for a long time. Like most I did absolute love the game up until the November 15th 2005. I still believe that the original game as planned out on paper was the absolute best MMORPG design to date. Unfortunately the suits won out and the NGE was born. The developers wanted to wait until the rewrite was more finished, but the suits won out. They did not want to support 2 parallel development tracks when one was ultimately going to be thrown out. From a cold business point of view this made perfect sense. Why pay for two development groups when you don’t have to? I know all of this straight from a Lucasarts employee I talked at the SOE block party 2 years ago. He was participating on LA’s behalf at the SWG booth. He was very forth coming and direct. One of the best talks I’ve had with a developer ever. He also talked about some of the things they wanted to do in the future, some of those things happened, some did not.

So the NGE happens. We, as in most of our guild, move to EQ2. Most like it and stay some leave for wow. So fast forward 2.5 years. I’ve followed off and on SWG. I recently decided to try it again, and I’m pleasantly surprised it feels more like the old game pre NGE, Only no skills. I’m playing with several launch day vets who I knew and they are all having a great time, as am I. ISD was A LOT of fun. It’s stable, hella fun and all the game mechanics work great. All my stuff is still there and the guild has helped me get a full suite of armor with current stats and equipment that work with the new rules; I’m a BH. I was also a BH pre NGE. The new village is a great quest hub for high end content and collections quests. I also play EQ2 still. I seriously tried WoW for 3 months post BC. I just could not get into it. I hit level 31 I was thinking like this is totally repetitive. I could not get into the graphics, the lore, and especially the arrogant 13 years old 1377 D00Z who spout out the vilest things at anyone in general chat and ninja loot in groups. I especially like the “players” who will roll on something they don’t need but you do and they know you do and then disenchant it in front of your face and tell me fun things like “me > you”. Real smooth, needless to say my experience in WoW as less than fun, from the game itself and the players. So I quit.

I have tried Vanguard, got the Special Edition for $15 new. Nice soundtrack, it's on my ipod now. It's not bad, I think I could get into it, but I just don't have time for it right now.

While SOE has totally messed up in the past, they are trying to make good games with what they have. I'm happy that, while they are now the "underdog", they keep going.

One last thing that has been said before and I will say it again. The NGE was two and a half years ago. Please let it go and move on with your life. You will be a much happier person.

It should be polished. It should be ready to play without the insane number of bugs that are still in it (even before end-game, not that that's the point).

That they've released "more polished than other companies have in the past" is entirely besides the point. It's not polished and it should be. Period.

However, until players start actively complaining about (and refusing to pay for) the release of beta-quality games, ass-backwards developers (or their tight-fisted distributors) will keep giving us this beta-quality rubbish. The next game to be released could be the WoW-breaking, most awesome, mind-destroyingly beautiful game to ever hit the market, with a crafting system to make even ex-SWG players cry tears of joy.... but if it's a buggy piece of crap, I'm still not going to play it. I don't pay to play beta; I pay to play release-quality games.

Now, don't get me wrong: personally, I love what AoC tries to be.
I want to play it! Really! I would happily give them my money each month for what AoC tries to be.

      Amen Brother!

Ever since Netscape started it's infinate beta cycle in 1997. Internet based software. Software that REQUIRES internet access to function at all, like a web browser or in this case an MMORPG. Has been developed with (ab)using the general public to act as their unpaid, in many cases your paying them, beta testing department. This trend has now migrated to consoles like the XBOX 360 and PS3 since both come with a hard drive (the ps3 always, xbox you can buy it after the fact) , sony and MS can now update to their hearts content games that shipped too early or in a beta state. It used to be that console games had to be 100% PERFECT, now they can be good enough. This will continue until the paying public stops buying beta quality software and stops being unpaid beta testers, and in some cases unpaid tech support via the forums. Case in point. AOC runs like dirt on my machine. But Vanguard, which uses the unreal engine, but an earlier version, runs wonderfully on balanced, but AOC is unplayable on the same hardware using the lowest settings possible and I tried for hours. Using a trick that a friend found on the forums. I was able to increase the frame rate from about 4 FPS to 8 to 10 FPS. Which makes it just barley playable. And NO I'm not getting a new computer just to play ONE game. Forget it. EQ2 runs beatifully as well on balanced even in a raid, and maxes out the WoW engine, but that is not really hard to do. Every game I have ever tried on my computer works awesomely, except Age of Conan.

The continual beta release cycle will continue, because people will put up with it. It's sad but true. It's only going to get worse, as studios try to save a buck, why pay massive amounts of people to test it when you can unleash it on an unsuspecting public and call it a preview. At least call it what it is, unpaid beta testing.

    • Evilsam said : The SWG curse, you will not be satisfied with another mmorpg until one comes out similar to SWG pre-cu.If that indeed ever happens. You will enjoy a few,for a brief time, but they will lose your interest. You will have the feeling that"something is missing".32 mix and match professions,A real crafting system,a good community with  a purpose. a combo that hasn't come along since.

Amen Brother. Tell it like it is!

I completely /agree with that statement. SWG DID ruin it for everyone concerened. There will never be another swg pre nge again, ever. Why? One Word "WoW" Everything will try to be like that since that is the magic sauce all the game companies which to reproduce. But so far have only gotten weak sauce. I miss SWG way too much. /sigh
