Why would you have to buy two PS3's or XboX 360's for that matter, just to play together? FFXI allows PC users and console users to play together, and I'm sure AoC will be no different.
I don't think anyone is down-playing Ranger in Guild Wars, it's just not the same type of pet taming as in UO. As I recall, as the pet fought you could see what stats it raised etc, because UO is kill based and not level based. And I think you could even lock the skills you didn't want the pet to raise, just like your character but I'm no 100% sure.
A previous poster mentioned Guild Wars, and you can play a Ranger and tame one pet. The pet will level up as it fights, but it's not quite the same as UO.

Earthrise, Mortal Online, Darkfall. All in development, all sandboxes.
Currently playing EvE, one of the most successful western MMOs on the market, also a sandbox.
AoC is one of the most linear games out there - when level x go to zone y and do quests until you hit level z, then never return to zone y again - and it has been firmly rejected by large parts of the community.
I don't believe this was rejected because it's not sandbox. I believe it's been rejected because of too many unresolved issues/bugs with the game, and the lack of motivation to fix and improve the game by Funcom.
