    • Where Are The PvP MMOs?
    • I can suggest one to try, although being a developer for it makes me considerably biased, so take my views with a pinch of salt.

The game is certainly not perfect, but I think it has some of what you are looking for, although we have recently been screwed over by an automated update from Microsoft and it's severely impacting our player numbers :-(

We are working to resolve this, but it has to come as part of a much larger patch which is taking a lot of man hours to develop.

And if you want to know what game I am talking about, just see my forum signature.

    • What game is the best?
    • All games have good and bad points; there is no objective 'best'.

Any judgments made are purely subjective, and usually based on personal preference, as not everyone likes the same feature.

    • Development Today: New Stars
    • Something that has annoyed me for a while in DarkSpace are the stars.

Our existing stars are reasonable OK, but they are just a flat sprite image, and I have never felt that there is any depth to them.

This is the current type of star you will find in DS:

Here are a couple of screen-shots of a new version that I have been working on for a few hours:

After receiving a little feedback, I came up with this slightly improved version:

All is not good though, as you will see in the following image.

I need to work out how to get rid of that square which is the 'glare' texture being overlaid by two many other additive layers... ones which increase underlying brightness (IE. the Jump effect). It still works, and only occurs under certain circumstances, but I am not happy with it yet.

    • Anyone Playing This?
    • One developer?

      Lets see...

      We currently have:

Richard "Faustus" Lyle - Lead Programmer / Owner
Drafell - Content Manager / Community Administrator
Shigernafy - Web Developer / Content Developer / Community Administrator
BackSlash - Content Developer / Portal Developer
Smartin - Content Developer / Community Moderator
Nat - Content Developer / Sound Engineer / Community Moderator

Richard does almost all of the coding for the core game engine (Medusa) and the hosting platform (GameCQ), as well as being the owner of the game itself and the relevant IP.

My role is kind of difficult to describe. I am not really a programmer, although I have a good enough understanding of C++ to work with the source code. I seem to be overseeing most of the content changes, which includes designing and implementing updated ship layouts, weapon damage values, and pretty much re-balancing the entire game system from the ground up. In addition I am also working on improving some of the in-game effects (both visual and audio).

Shigernafy takes care of a lot of the website development, as well as assisting with content development and balance changes.

BackSlash is assisting with developing the new layout designs and improving the GameCQ content management system (the game Lobby and update manager).

Smartin is helping with implementing the balance changes.

Nat is assisting with implementing the balance changes, as well as creating and updating the audio effects.

Everyone mentioned above also does a lot more that isn't listed, and I cannot avoid mentioning those in the player base who have been invaluable in helping to provide testing and feedback, and even providing us with some source material for inclusion within DarkSpace.

We try hard to actively include the community in the development process.

Almost anyone that wants to get involved can.
