I'm curious. What extremely popular action/rpg game does not have you spamming clicks and actions?
Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, NWN, Diablo, Kingdom Hearts, God of War, Ninja Gaiden, Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, etc.
I could go on and on. All of these games boil down to spamming attacks and clicking actions (or performing combos), yet, millions of people enjoy the combat in these games.
Sure there's other things in fighting games like dodging, but right now, the networking technology is not there to have a true active dodging system without the frustration of lag. The developers of AoC put in the defense shields as a substitute for dodging.
My point is, don't judge the game before you've played it. Looking at a video of NWN or Diablo 2 I wouldn't think those games would be fun either.
Just... wow.
Score another one for idiotic religious nuts.
Probably the same people that try to get literary classics banned from libraries.

This statement identifies the biggest problem I have with the MMORPG genre today. Back when MUDs were still (relatively) popular, Meridian 59 and UO were forging the genre of the "Virtual World".
There was so much more to do in these types of games then kill monsters and collect loot.
If you never played one of the more popular MUDs or UO (before all of the changes) then it is hard to describe to you that they were not simply games, they were worlds that you explored. There was no end. You lived there.
Most people who have never played this type of game have no concept of what I am talking about.
There were no "levels", you simply explored the world and did what you wanted to do and your character got better because of it (you know... like... real life).
There were no arbitrary caps to what type of content you could experience because you were not "X" level. If you couldn't kill a creature it's because you weren't thinking, you didn't plan correctly or you needed some help. It wasn't... "You can't hit this creature because it is this many numbers higher then you on a scale."
Anyway. This statement just made me remember that there are no Virtual Worlds any longer, they have all been replaced by games... And it makes me sad.

This whole thread is pointless.

After reading through all of your posts I see that this one word identifies your view of death penalties pretty well.
If you consider playing a video game work.. then of course you wouldn't think a harsh death penalty would be a good idea, but there are quite a few of us out there that do not consider it work.
We would like to see a game actually have some consequences when you die, some sense of accomplishment.
I like comparing it to God Mode in an FPS game. Sure, you're invincible and at first it's fantastic not getting hurt, but after a few hours of that, it gets pretty boring. The sense of accomplishment is gone, there's no rush of adrenaline when you come out victorious over a really tough boss, or a huge number of monsters.
The same thing applies to MMO games.
There's no victory when you beat a tough monster or dungeon with a sliver of life left with an easy DP... because if you had died, you just have to take 30 seconds to run back to where you were... big deal... On the other hand, if there was a very harsh DP and you died... it would piss you off, you might curse, but next time you were in a fight and were close to death and WON you would actually feel victorious, not just... "Ok, killed another monster..."
I remember some battles in EQ where I would actually scream with joy after we took down a tough monster, or got swarmed and managed to kill them all without anyone dying... it was FUN. (Something that is severely lacking in today's MMOs, for me personally)
