My biggest beef with the programming is that I don't like the targetting system. The combat targetting system in wow stinks.
Could you clarify what you don't like? You have the option to use the mouse to target, target the closest enemy, target the next closest enemy, target the closest ally, target the next closest ally, target who is targetting you, target your target's target and so on. The group leader has the option to mark targets. What more do you need?
In a crowded area clicking the correct target I find annoying and lots of times, I'll have lost any target, so I end up with nothing targetted. I find it annoying and frustrating, and this could be done better. I've played other MMOs and haven't seen anything like this.
I take it then that you don't use the tab targetting? By default if you press the "tab" button it will target the closest enemy in front of you. If you then press it again it will target the next closest enemy and so on. Holding Shift while pressing Tab will reverse the direction, getting closer to you each time. You can set up your keys to target allies as well in this manner. I find it very effecient and you'll never end up with no target using this method. Also, there is an option so that if you don't click on a target but just click on an empty spot you don't lose your current target. I forget what it's called, perhaps "sticky" targetting? That should help you quite a bit.
Another game design flaw in WoW is the fact the game is by far too loot driven. Everybody is nutz for loot, and I don't understand it. The only meaningful character development in the game is thru loot.
What about professions?
The gathering professions are good, but the professions that create something aren't that great. Leatherworking, tailoring, and blacksmithing I find are a time and money sink. Stick to using dropped loot and you are way ahead.
I agree with you for the most part, however for every profession there are a few really nice and useful created items. I too wish that professions were more useable by the average player. I find that true crafters, people who are just interested in crafting items for others are a lot more useful then just having a profession and creating items for yourself. Professions for the individual are by and large just a money sink, but a healthy profit can be made by true crafters. It will take a bit of time and money to get started, but once you reach the upper levels, you can make the money back if you know what you are doing.
If you want to see crap loot and crap crafting, check out LOTRO.
In a word, "Yes". I have played quite a few others (Ryzom, DDO, 9dragons, LOTRO, AO) and WoW has them all beat. The only game that came close was LOTRO.
I posted earlier about Raid Drop Rates- thank you for posting replies, now I have a question about High- Level Instance Drops: Have they become better- more frequent- or do I have to run my toon through Sholo 200 times still?
As far as animation goes, I thought the animation in this game was terrible until 2 things happened:
1) I re-installed WOW to solo-play (I can't stand soloing in LOTRO) and noticed how cartoony their graphics and animation is
2) I bought a dual-core with an 8600 GTS and can now run both DX10 (on Vista64 Ultimate, baby!) and much higher graphical settings for LOTRO and it really is a beautiful game- when your graphics don't suck.
Basically what I am getting at: Is WOW less frustrating than it was before BC (you know what I 'm talking about). I do really enjoy the game and I cannot find anything better (until WAR comes out). But it got really frustrating at the higher levels.
What characteristics of an MMORPG do you look at most?
