    • About combat and the auto-attack rate - too much standing still and doing nothing
    • I was actually considering using Age of Conan as an example of a game with a decent rate of normal attacks. If you queue up your normal attacks in that game you'll pretty much flow from one attack to another. There's no static pause inbetween.

The rest of your examples are so-so. Some feel like they have a decent pace, some are slow, but the real question is: why should it matter how auto-attacks works in another game? I don't want to see the crowbar from Half Life in every shooter ;)

Anyway, thanks for the comfort from confirming that special attacks liven up things. I still think it wouldn't hurt if you were constantly auto-attacking though. Considering that individual auto-attacks would do less damage because of their rate, it also wouldn't matter much if you lose out on some auto-attacks because you're executing special attacks.

TL/DR: You can have the best of both worlds. Request it please.

    • Long life spans
    • Won't RvR just turn into the assist-trains from DAoC anyway, so it doesn't matter if one guy can two-shot you cause he has four friends that'll alpha you too?

I'd love to hear that there's such a depth to the class and combat system that the assist-train won't be king, but I'm just trying to look at this realistically.

Even Eve which has an extreme variety in setups, support, damage types and damage sources still comes down to the assist-train so in the end your life expectancy is counted in seconds if you're called primary.

    • If you're in the closed beta, would you do me a favour and request that Mythic doubles their rate of auto-attacks?

Judging from the movies there's alot of standing around doing nothing between each auto-attack. To be blunt: It looks dumb and dull. I see no reason why they can't increase the rate of swings with your weapon to make combat seem more like combat and less like an old man chopping down a tree.

Don't worry about damage per second. Mythic are clever. They'll figure out a way to lower auto-attack damage accordingly so the DPS remains the same while combat would become a fluent stream of attacks instead of googling your opponent to death.

    • Want to but can't
    • Eve isn't for the impatient.

That's one of the reasons why the average age of Eve players is around 25 years.

The closest substitute to old SWG is old UO (if you go to the Siege Perilous, it's the last classic server), the second closest is probably Eve followed by Ryzom at a third (if that thing is still around, mind it's a PvE game though).

Note: Eve goes for having one of the steepest learning curves, but UO is pretty hard too. There's no easy way to learn how to survive in a sandbox game where everyone can do what they want, because there's no step-by-step goals.
