    • Hardest class to level?
    • Only character I've ever had problems levelling was a resto druid. They kill so stupidly slowly.

      And that includes levelling:

A holy/disc priest from 1-60: no problems (DPS is surprisingly good)

A prot warrior from 1-40: no problems (immense survivability)

A resto shaman from 60-70: no problems (kill speed isn't great, but after you get water shield, you never need to drink).

Levelling is easy. Unless you're a resto druid!

    • Potions, Elixirs and Tansmutations, which?
    • My alchemist isn't that high. But this is what I understand from having read the forums.

Transmutation is generally rated as the weakest of the three options. The long cooldowns on transmutes means that you can't transmute very often, and even when you do a transmute, the chance of getting anything from your specialisation is very small.

Elixir mastery is often a good choice, since elixirs sell well and are very useful in the endgame. This is a good default option to take.

Potion mastery is also a reasonable option, particularly if you chain drink mana potions. If your guild already has an elixir master, consider taking potion mastery.

    • Help A New Player
    • Well it's difficult to say, since I've never met you, but I will make a few guesses.

Firstly, I'd recommend you start on a PvP server. If you later work out that you don't enjoy this playstyle, then you can transfer to a PvE server later. It's impossible to transfer the other way round.

Secondly, I'd suggest you start on one of the recommended servers. These may have relatively low populations, but they are also likely to have a relatively high proportion of new players, who you can learn alongside. On some established servers, everyone will be playing their 6th alt etc, and will expect you to know the game well already.

Something else you should do is form a small list of possible servers, and then check out the forums for each server, to get an idea of the place. For example, I play on EU-Ravenholdt, an RPvP server. Checking the forums will reveal that we are also known as "Dramaholdt" due to the high amount of forum drama. We are one of the best servers in Europe for world PvP, with several active PvP guilds on both factions, but are relatively backward in things like raid progression (only one guild has made progress in Sunwell).

Some servers will include large numbers of people from a particular non-english speaking nation - e.g. there are one or two "Russian" servers. Best to avoid those.

Thirdly, I'd recommend levelling a few classes to 20 to get a feel for them, picking one, and then sticking with it until you get that character to endgame. You will learn a lot more about the game by doing this, than by trying to level a whole bunch of alts at the same time.

    • questions about Shammy specs...

That seems like a pretty powerful nerf. As an ehancement spec its my bread and butter weapon buff. I use that with windfall totem for max dps.

Now with no rockbiter, I guess I'd use windfury weapon buff and then maybe the agility air totem (since windfury totem doesnt stack with weapon buff)

Unless theyre replacing rockbiter with something else ?

      What is "windfall totem"?

Never done the maths myself, and I don't play enhancement, but I'm aware that commonly received wisdom amongst shaman is that Rockbiter is completely useless after the windfury weapon buff becomes available, and puts out considerably lower damage.

Hence my initial reaction is that losing rockbiter isn't a big deal.

Every enhancement shaman I have raided with buffs their weapons with windfury, whilst resto and ele use flametongue. How much DPS do you put out with rockbiter and how far have you progressed through the raiding endgame?

    • WotLK vs TBC
    • I agree with some of what the OP says.

In order for the concept of arena to work, all classes must be balanced at PvP. This is especially the case given the high cost in time of levelling up and gearing a replacement character for arena play compared to other arena based games (cf guild wars). If characters are unequal and cannot be readily replaced, then the result is a large number of disappointed PvP customers (it didn't matter if people were unequal in battlegrounds, since in a 10 person team, teamwork and gear tends to outweigh any small differences between class capabilites).

Hence the games is forced to be balanced around arena. Especially 2v2 arena, which is where most arena people can be found.

However only a small proportion of people play arena with any seriousness.

And the balance of other parts of the games (e.g. PvE, battlegrounds etc), gets messed up in the interests of keeping arena working.

      ---

I used to agree with the OP about the concept of epic flyers ruining pvp. However that isn't really the case. If someone wants pvp on a pvp server, there are plenty of places where pvers must operate on the ground, and will be forced to fight  e.g. meeting stones, quel'danas, the elemental plateau etc.

If anything the balance has gone the other way. Whereas beforehand, if a raider was out farming mats or whatever and he was jumped by a PvPer, he would have at least some chance of defending himself. Nowadays, if a PvEer is jumped by a S3/4 subtletly rogue, he is pretty much auto-dead. And that's even if the PvEr has put some effort into getting himself a PvP gear set (e.g. S1).

      ----

It seems to me that the next expansion is likely to continue the direction of TBC. There will be arena. There will be flying mounts. Blizzard is a commercial company, and will develop it's product to meet anticipated challenges from rivals. At the moment it looks like the main rivals to WotLK will be AoC and WhO, so Blizzard will develop WoW accordingly. The game is likely to become more and more pvp-centric.
