Gravarg writes: not on your ship, but there are several quests to go help another ship that is in distress.  For federation players one of the first quests you get is to go help a ship that's being attacked.  After destroying the attackers' ships you beam aboard and find injured people you can heal (science officer) and the ships warp core is going to explode, which you can fix (engineering officer).  Legacy of Romulus has expanded a lot on quests like this.  They play out differently based on what officer you are. You can divert power around in combat, between weapons, shields, engines, and auxiliary.  It's not extremely detailed, but it can make a difference in how your ship performs.

As Gravarg said above, though, they are doing more career-specific mission choices, but there aren't that many.

Give the game a shot though.  I think it's a lot of fun.

When I've played the game before current expansion, it felt pretty decent. Although some technical aspects of the game remind you that it's an old game, still can be an enjoyable experience.

If you're more into PvP, I would recommend lvling a Klingon  char at some point, although Romulans do have stealth as well, so now they might be a valid (or even a better) choice. Stealthing, choosing a target, fully buffing your damage then shredding your prey to bits and stealthing away before his teammates can react... felt really good. ^^;
