It was a beta weekend.  Anyone who wanted to play was required to play during the couple of days they were allowed to.  This fluffs the numbers of people playing during the same time period.

Also, it was free to play during the beta weekend and didn't specifically require you to purchase anything to play it.  Again, this will fluff the numbers.

The game will be like this when it releases as well, then it will mellow out over the next week or two.
