I take back my previous post. What actually seems to be happening is that the lighting system is messed up and sometimes distorts the characters faces beyond recognition.

I don't think there's much difference. Hard to tell from stills but you're only missing specular shading and maybe some bump-mapping. I would look into your settings, looks like some shaders are off or not working.
