Tibia : 100,000 Subscriptions

Posted Aug 14, 2007 by Keith Cross

CipSoft has announced that Tibia has reached the 100,000 player subscription milestone.

Regensburg, August 10th - The MMORPG Tibia reaches its next milestone as the subscriber base now numbers more than 100,000 players.

"This finally promotes Tibia to the rank of a major MMORPG." says Guido Lübke, responsible Managing Director of CipSoft, the developer of Tibia. "We always believed in the product and kept developing new features, released new updates and approached new markets, but seeing the counter turn to the magic number was surely a grand moment in the company's history"

Just having celebrated its 10th anniversary, Tibia is one of the oldest but still growing MMORPGs worldwide. Currently, more than 300,000 international players log in to Tibia on a regular basis, with most of them being registered as Free Accounts at no charge.

To celebrate this event the lucky player who purchased the 100,000th active Premium Account has been rewarded with some very rare in game items and a 1-year voucher to extend his subscription.

"This is a magnificent milestone, which we just passed," says Florian Eckert, Product Manager of Tibia. "but it's just one step in a long series still to come. Our development pipeline is packed and the next milestones already in reach."

These free MMO's really crack me up, they count everyone who ever registered with them as if that is even close to the number of people who actually play the game.

Sorry soon as you say free to play any numbers you put forth are meaningless.

So pretty funny that they claim to be a major MMO when no one has even heard of them.  Pretty good job of disinformation.

This game is actually a lot of fun. It was the first mmorpg that I played. I got to say I made a ton of friends and the community and economy was great. I am still tempted to play it again. The grind is just a little bad to put it nicely. And I always hated that the mobs would not respawn if you stand near where they spawn.

It's a *very* popular game in some European countries (esp. Germany, Poland, Sweden) and South America. In fact, I know more people playing Tibia (or Runescape, for that matter) than WoW. Why? I played it, and it sucks, but it works on a 386 computer from 1990 and is free. Also, the game is continuosly running since 1997 and has additional appeal due to ruleset similiar to that of Ultima Online (e.g. open PvP with looting).

As for the numbers, you're wrong, or didn't bother to read the whole thing. 100,000 is the number of premium (paid) accounts they got. The number of registered accounts is in millions, though they themselves say there's about 250,000 active free+paid accounts. Just go to their damn site and see how many servers they got, with how many people. Login to one of them. You can even see who's got a paying account in-game. It's not even peak yet and there's 50,000 players online at this very moment.
