9Dragons : Interview With Howard Marks

Posted May 21, 2007 by Jon Wood

Recently, Staff Writer Adele Celia had the opportunity to ask Howard Marks, the CEO of Acclaim, a few questions about their martial arts MMORPG, 9Dragons.

MMORPG.com:

You just opened your Item Mall, and the community seems to be having a lot of problems getting their coins activated. Will this be remedied soon?

Howard Marks:

Yes, these initial issues were fixed. We silently released the Item Mall and we have been overwhelmed with players immediately purchasing items. We have listened carefully to their feedback and have made the appropriate changes.

Read the whole interview here.

I love this part.

MMORPG.com:

Players are complimenting Acclaim on the lack of bots that so often appear in other games of this type. How do you plan to keep the game as bot free as possible?

Howard Marks:

We're glad to hear the players are happy. Our GMs are relentless. Once they have identified a bot, they often remove their weapons, cache and clothes and then transport them to our free PVP zone, leaving them defenseless there so that other players can gain karma points by killing them

Thats classic, still to bad this game has a major grind after 1 or 2 weeks of playing.

Yes, that is too bad.
I was waiting for the most authentic asian style MMO and thought this to be it. Surely it is an okay game, but somehow I do not feel it authentic at all. Seriously, just because you have a chinese sword and silk clothes that barely does the trick.
Why can't someone make a realistic game for once? Leave Magic, Ki or whatever out of it. I would call that authentic, you would only battle with weapons, form mounts, etc.
About the grind... I have yet to see an MMO that is not about grinding. Simply they are.

Good job on the questions.

Some of the answers were kinda fluffy and some had good info.

I found 9D fun for the time I played, that is until the grind got to much.

9D isn't a bad game, just too grindy. And it sounds like they are doing good things to the game... except for the grind.

This part sounds interesting:

We had to stop a Black vs. White War between the alliances once because we had a technical glitch but it's resolved and players can expect them to resume every weekend. Coming soon, players will be able to participate in a new feature called Storm vs. Storm in which you can form a raiding party and actually take over a castle from NPCs. We're waiting until enough players reach high enough levels to participate. If a group of players are successful, they'll get to own the place, tax the map for gold, and will then need to defend it against other players with NPCs as their slaves! What's more fun than that?

Sounds alot like Lineage2's seige system, which made for some really cool battles. I'm so temped to go back, but again, the grind.

9Dragons is pretty good game (if you dont count the endless grind and the lack of content). It still needs some polishing but its heading in the good way. Keep it up!

Yeah, definitely have to give them props for that!

You get what you pay for, and even when you pay for them the games sometimes suck.

Good question. 9Dragons has many game elements that no other game offers, like our meditation skills, or our Lightfoot techniques.

This is kind of funning seeming that 9 dragons has the same stuff as SilkRoad Online. such as the two mentioned in  his sentence.

The game is not that bad but the staff over there is, they suck big time.

I think they either just got lucky or stole the idea for this game from someone else because I know they are not smart enough to come up with it.

trying to get an issue or bug addressed is a waste of time, They haven't heard a word since Beta started.

they say they have listened to thier users they can't be talking about the user of this game.

Well I would lvoe to see 9D evolve into a game when 50% of lv is through batlting monsters and 50% is for quests. That would make the game less grindy and more fun.

But the fact that the skills are trained by using them is reallya  good idea. It's no more like I go to skillmaster and buy one skill to full and I'm amstering it in 5 minutes...no it takes time and practice.

The castle siege thing is in alot of games. and the taxes and such. But it will be a good thing. A raiding party sounded to me like we would be able to invade other clans territories wich would be kind of cool.
