Puzzle Pirates : AGC Progress Report

Posted Nov 19, 2005 by Dana Massey

At the Austin Game Conference we talked to Daniel James, the CEO of Three Rings and the designer of Puzzle Pirates. In addition to the growth of his game, we also talked about where it is headed and his company's next project: "Bang! Howdy".

The growth of Puzzle Pirates was one of the biggest revelations of the Austin Game Conference. On the secondary market panel – and later confirmed in an interview – Daniel James spoke of how his company had grown from bringing in $500,000 to $2,000,000 this past year. Daniel James is the CEO of Three Rings, a San Francisco development company that released their first game – Puzzle Pirates – in the late 2003.

Puzzle Pirates is unlike the typical MMORPG. Rather than the traditional systems for fighting, sailing and other things you’d expect in an MMO pirate game, players must work at mini-games (puzzles) to do things like sail, fight, etc. In this way, the game is unlike any other MMORPG.

Hi I am Warlordnemo and a real Puzzle Pirates lover. I wanted to tell tigris 67 it is the greatest game ever!!!!

If you hadn't played it at any time you cant say anything about it!!!!

The game depends on many puzzles all really difficult to master and the ratings are very hard.

So you dont get a place in the list of ultimates when your brain cant get it. Its a game for all kind of people and i swear i talk for all Pirates it is true piracy and its really fun to play.

There are shops where you can produce and trade everything like in real life.
Its a free market controlled by the players and you have items for nearly every puzzle. To make money is not that easy but thats the skill a game needs.

Like real life....

::::24::

And if you think the puzzles are easy after a day puzzling.... i can tell you its not.

If you get the real knowledge of a puzzle you have to spend much time in it. And it gets moore difficult as better you get.

I can learn every day new things and the Three Rings Coorparation tries to put always new gymmicks and events on that games.

Test it for a week and then i want to hear your voting again. But Please dont write such grap about something you dont know about!!!!

For all who want to test the game visit me on the Sage ocean with the same nick, i would be happy to see ye there ;) !

I am terrible at games like tetris so I avoided this game like the plague. Are some of the puzzles doable for those of us who arent puzzle people?

Looks interesting though.

I've never been a big puzzle fan either. Mostly RPG's/FPS/Turn-Based games, etc. I tried PP this summer and loved it! Got my wife and a bunch of friends on it as well.

The puzzles are simple to learn, yet complex to master at times. Some people like certain puzzles (I hate the Carpentry puzzle for example, but love the Gunning and Battle Navigation puzzle, my wife hates the Duty Navigation puzzle) and some people hardly do any puzzles. They just socialize, buy stuff, pillage, etc.

Try it out. The in game tutorials are fairly simple. Most people are willing to help out with any questions you might have as well.

If you journey on the Doubloon servers look up "Valien" - that's my pirate and I'm on quite a bit in the evenings (EST).

On average there are typically over 1,000 players a night on our server! Lots of stuff going on all the time.
