TURBINE CALLS BACK SUBSCRIBERS WITH FREE-PLAY CAMPAIGN FOR ASHERON’S CALL® 2 Former Asheron’s Call 2 Subscribers Invited Back to Experience the Latest Updates to the Game for 30 Days Free WESTWOOD, Mass. - May 26, 2005 - Turbine, Inc., a leading publisher of online subscription entertainment, announced today the start of its "Callback" campaign for the critically acclaimed massively multiplayer online game Asheron's Call 2, which invites former Asheron's Call 2 subscribers to come back and play the game free for thirty days. Turbine will give former players the opportunity to experience the many enhancements made since the initial release of the graphically groundbreaking MMORPG Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings. In addition to more than 20 episodic content updates Turbine provided to existing players since launch, Asheron’s Call 2 contains many new features including major game engine upgrades, all new Hero and Crafting systems and extensive performance improvements. These changes enhance the gameplay experience for returning players as well as new players joining with the recent launch of Asheron’s Call 2: Legions. In Asheron's Call 2, players are challenged to explore and conquer a world that has been devastated by conflict of an epic scale. In this unique fantasy environment players advance through hunting, questing, crafting and optional head-to-head combat. The world of Asheron’s Call 2 is both beautiful and deadly, where only the strongest may survive. The "Callback" campaign is open to former Asheron's Call 2: Fallen Kings account holders who did not migrate from the Microsoft billing system when Turbine acquired the AC franchise titles from Microsoft Game Studios in 2004. Now, those former Microsoft account holders are eligible for a free 30-day trial. This offer does not apply to players who already migrated their Asheron's Call 2 accounts to Turbine, or to players who purchase Asheron’s Call 2: Legions, which has its own 30-day free play period included with purchase. This program also does not provide access to the new continent or races available to Legions customers. |

hmm...... I just went to the site, and the only additional info in the news section...... was the same press release we read here. No where does it say where or how to reactivate and get the 30 day trial. I had to go thru the forums there to find a post where an admin said all 'they' need to do is hit the big button in the launcher. I guess they assume everyone who quit still left the game on their system?? I imagine I can reinstall it, and hope if I hit the big button it gives me 30 free days.... and an awesomely huge update..... but I have better things to do..... and better games to play...... If Turbine wants people to come back, oughta make it easier for us....
I was under the impression that if you migrate your account, you get 30 days tacked on for free. That seems easy enough to me.
The only difficulty would come from Microsoft's records and what they have, and legally can, release to Turbine to authenticate accounts (needing to know Zone passport, character name, and server gets confusing with the merges).
I tried the "callback" offer. Want to know what happen ? I un-installed the game within 30 minutes of login back in the game. Why ? Well after playing games like WOW, GW, AO, COH, EVE, etc, etc... playing AC2 on my computer feel like i'm playing it on a 386. I really don't know what they have done to their engine but man compared to today's game (see my example above) the performance i'm getting is pathetic.
All the game above run flawlessly on my 3000+ Athlon, 1024 Mo of RAM, 9800 Pro with 256 Mo. I install AC2, not even with the high resolution graphics, running the game on medium setting and i get like 12 fps in dungeons.
Maybe Turbine added lots of contents since launch, maybe they fix lots of bugs, but their engine absolutly sucks. I don't know for you, but i can't stand playing a game at 12 fps. Turbine fix your engine, it's not normal that an 2-3 years old engine, with todays computers perform so badly.
Trying to get players to come back is good but they still have done nothing to fix what I think is a major flaw of the game. The world is empty and has a dead feeling to it. There is almost no life to the actual world itself. You have empty cities or villages. No NPCs and the ones you do have are only for quest or to sell player made equipment and there is no way to know where they are located other then trial and error it seems. The actual presentation of the world is still just plain bad.
If they want people to come back why don't they do something about the first thing players see and experience upon enterting the game world. Make the player feel they are in a living world and not just some environment with monsters to kill cause that's all it seems like at the moment. There is nothing to do. Even Asheron's Call 1 felt more alive then AC2 by a wide margin I feel.
Have you logged in since the March patch? The march patch added lots of NPCs in the main cities and minor towns, and provided quite a few more short quests. The engine is quite a bit better now than it was in the past, and with a system much lower than the one that you describe I'm able to play at 40FPS.

Anyway, you should try it out again. Knorr is great, yes, so you should definitely try out the expansion, but you should try out the game as a whole. Come on, isn't it worth it to try it for free until WoW comes out with some real end-game content?
The whole thing about max settings in one game vs. max settings in another is that using that as a reference point is like having an amp that goes to 11.
As far as settings, turn up Adaptive Degrade, turn off AA and AF (or at the very least turn them down), and mess around with your settings. It's very idiosyncratic, but most people, I find, are able to find settings that work well with their computer and are very aesthetically pleasing.
I migrated my old account back, but what bothers me is I have to re-enter all my credit card information and re-activate my account 30 days free, yet nowhere on that page does it even say I'm eligable for the free time.
I quit AC2 long, long ago, and while I wanna give it a try, I don't wanna re-enter my info and find out that I've been re-billed. I think that's going to turn off a lot of other 'vets' like me who slugged out the game through beta and release.
I'd try it for *FREE* but I don't get the feeling of "free" when it's asking for my credit card info.
That's just a security concern. If Turbine bills you, anyway, after you've started the free trial, I'm sure that you have plenty of places to complain to (BBB, Turbine, etc).
Gruff has said at forums.ac2.turbinegames.com that anyone that had not yet migrated and reactivated their account will get the free 30 days automatically.
I would just make sure to go into the billing section and make sure your account is listed as cancled.
