CCP Games and NVIDIA have released this latest video demoing their cloth & hair simulation tech. CCP is using PhysX 2.8.3 and NVIDIA APEX Clothing technology to achieve the effects seen in the video.
Outside of the impressive physics feat on display in the video, the particular assets being used to demo the cloth and hair effects look like they could come from CCP's World of Darkness MMOG. Perhaps this is also a bit of a tease?
Watch the video here.
It has to be from world of darkness. They are totaly flirting with us. I was very impresed with the Video. I am not pleased with myself but I am really looking forward to this game. After everything we have seen in the industry it's cool that something is coming that still make me feel that way. The World of Darkness games were my favorite pnp settings baring everything apart from Rifts. CCP pls don't mess this one up. I will give you a Dairylea triangle if you don't.:)
I must admit the video made me squee like a girl, but I really shouldn't get ahead of myself, or lead you guys on. It could very well be nothing, but there is no harm in hoping.
I am a huge WoD fan. I received the Vampire: The Masquerade 2nd edition rulebook for my 10th birthday. Pretty unusual desire for a 10 year old I'd say, but hey, it is what it is!
Even if it is not WoD, the tech itself is pretty impressive, and I'd love to see developers push the envelope with MMOs for once. What better platform to push this kind of technology than a genre that aims to produce believable virtual worlds?
Thanks for the vid, looks amazing.
I think you're right too, that certainly has to be some sort of a tease. If I remember correctly, EVE's Ambulation project was going to be used as a sort of testing ground for CCP/White Wolf's upcoming World of Darkness. It would make sense since I highly doubt that the actual Fashion Designers they have on board to work on Ambulation/WOD would be designing "goth" style outfits for the Caldari/Gallente/Amarr/Minmatar races. Ya never know though ;)

LOL 10th birthday? fair play man, I didn't even know rpg's exisited when I was that age. The closest thing i had were my Fighting Fantasy game books. I think my parents would have sent me to therapy a lot earlyer:) but I digress. As far as the video, it's a Goth girl looking clearly vamped up. If its not anything to do with there World Of Darkness game then they are the being giant teases and I intend to write them a very strongly worded letter.......spelt better than this post....probably!
One of the reasons I love CCP so much is that they are always trying to push things to the next level. Regardless of whether you like EVE itself, you can not deny that CCP are innovators. Their successful single-server game world is a very impressive feat. The technology they use to run and make their game is very cutting edge.
APEX for clothing and hair. Enlighten (Geomerics) for incredibly realistic dynamic lighting. Things that have never been implemented at this scale. Absolutely can not wait to see what else they have in store. It makes me giddy thinking of how much work and effort they put into making sure their products are of high quality.
Edit: It is, in my opinion, probably part of the reason CCP has taken so long with Ambulation/WiS/Incarna. They work with the companies that make this technology, and it's likely that the majority of people on their staff haven't worked with this tech before. So imagine having to train your staff to use the software AS you're developing the end product.
damn do i forgot to submit this on news room ?:D
Yes, cosy. You failed me for the last time!
OMG! Mike, can we put the forum up now? Please!!! This game is numero uno on my personal watch list. From this video alone I'm already in love with the visual aspects and detail of the game. There is no doubt in my mind that these are assets from WoDO. If CCP only gets 50% of the gameplay I like right with this one I'm on for the duration.
This made my day Mike. Nice find. VERY NICE FIND!! I'm going to go break out my World of Darkness books and start writing the outlines for the backstory of a Vampire and a werewolf character!
Edit: This is something that I would surely slap a few grand down for a new gaming rig in a heartbeat!
We can't do the forum until we have the listing, and we need assets / info for the listing, of which we have none at the moment. :( Cross your fingers for E3!

I was knee deep into Dungeons & Dragons at 12 years of age and have been hooked since then. My gaming group just finished our own campaign world based on Advanced D&D and played our first night this past Saturday. D&D and WW World of Darkness have been my all time favorites followed by Gamma World, Shadowrun and Mechwarrior to round out my top 5 (though honestly I can't number them 1-5; it just depends on the moment!)
I remember the first time my mom saw one of my D&D books. She said "This isn't some devil worshipping stuff is it?". I told her that yeah there were demons and devils in the game but they were there so that we'd have something to fight against. She gave me a shaky "ok, just don't do anything to end up in jail." response. Well, so far so good mom!
*Crosses everything possible*
Lol I wish I could say the same:) Top 5 pnp systems is a top idear though, maybe we should start a thread. I did enjoy Rifts slightly more but I never got attatched to my rifts characters like I did to my WOD characters. I remeber this Assamite Antitribu I used to play. He was a blind assasin. Really creapy old man with a sword cain called Mr yousif. Playing him I used to get really freaked out, he was a prity scary individual and to this day I really don't know were a lot of the stuff I said in charcter came from. You really dont get that with any other system. Dark scary awsomeness. I would set him against any twilight vampire any day:)
Looks very impressive actually. I wonder if the clothes can get wet?
I think WoDO will add a lot of things we are missing in todays MMOs, I can't wait :)
If anyone can do it, my bet is on CCP. They are but one on a very short list of MMORPG Devs that I still have faith in. I genuinely believe this game could revitalize the genre. Here's to hoping.
P.S. so is it WOD, or WoDO....I just want to get it right.
aw nuts.
Now all I can think about is making some hot vampira with victorian boots and a corset with a great big whip!
Freakin' incredible! That must take some serious GPU.
Ken
I don't think we have to wait until E3, Mike...
Check the top news article I added in the World of Darkness Online facebook group....
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=84093213070
Now THAT will be interesting...
Your article states the event will take place on Sep. 23-26 2010, that is way after E3. :P
When this will come out I will unsubscribe from any games I will be playing and will focus on WoD. Sorry other game developers, CCP (bunch of vikings living on rock in middle of ocean) is the only company that have balls to bring something new, different and fun.
Are u sure? :)
U gonna buy 2 Nvidia video card just to see this in game? Couse even top video card can't solve it solo :)))
It will be out in couple years most likely. By then I think I will be able to run it with more than 1 FPS :P (I hope so)
It's already out :))) and in some games already included
second video card need to work whit PhysX :)
That just looks amazing. I get a feeling WoD could be a major contender when it gets released if the game shows as much promise as this video.
My hopes for this game has brigthened a little bit more. Can't wait to here an official announcement from CCP.
That's a funny thing actually, CCP has basically said nothing so far about the game. My only fear is that they're teasing us with the game way too early for their own good (like, 2013 release or something). E3... /fingers crossed.
Cool.
Here's the thing, games have been able to do this for a long time.
Now you may say then why don't they? Well because it requires a physics card, up until now people didn't want to buy physics cards because not enough companies were using them, which was because people weren't buying them (a fun circle). Now NVidia snatched up PhsyX, which was making physics cards, and implemented that on their video cards. However currently with NVidia cards you still need 2 cards. When you have 2 cards the second will run as a physics card (so not difference between buying a physics card previous to this), people are starting to get interested again because so many people are used to installing two video cards.
The other issue with this tech has always been syncing it across a network. If you let each machines compute it on it's own then the result can be ever so slightly different and then over time things get really off. Another issue is that yes there is a software version of physx but it is not as powerful and it eats up the CPU fast. Which means if someone doesn't have the card and tries to run it in software mode it could kill their system.
There is one option for MMOs though and we may start seeing companies do this. You let it all be purely cosmetic (as this video is). This would prevent crazy combat physics but what it would allow is anyone who has a phsyics card could now see all the different characters in game move around with hair and cloth (and armor) physics to provide a nice visual.
Yes it does look good, timing is a bit odd,i somehow think NVIDIA worked with them on releasing this as it just so happens Intel just released news on their first multiplatform cloth simulation technology[ HAVOC].So i think NVIDIA wanted to get something out there and is probably working with CCP on this.
Once they have the program/tools setup it is really not that hard, just a bit of time consuming. This video shows them taking a striaght rigid cape and easily transforming it into cloth simulation, what impressed me about the CCP/Nvidia video was they also utilized shadows :D,i think everyone was too busy checking out the chick to notice lol.
PhysX is what i have been asking for a while now,it is quite doable also in this video shows how easy it is to rtransform destructible surfaces as well and shows a quick real demo in unrealtournament DECK map.
PHYSX simulation
Also watch the Metro video in there ,half way through it shows some cool effects using Phys x ,shooting a wall no longer looks like a cheap decal.
it's always funny when everyone screm that gameplay is more important than graphics and then they see some eye candy and we all fall for it.. heh We already saw that with AoC and 80% people can't run this game so I don't get my hopes up.. every company can make nice graphics but not many can make good game..
Not every company is CCP. I think that's why so many people are excited about this game. They don't screw around.
CCP are no amateurs. They do things quite deliberately. This is definitely just a small taste of things to come.
This looks absolutely amazing. If this is going to be actual gamplay character design, I can't wait to see the finished product!
All I can say is Wow! Never seen an Avatar move like that. If they can make a game using this technology that runs on a half decent rig they will make Wow an afterthought. I will bet Blizzard is watching this closely.
The thing that impressed me the most wasnt the quality of the graphics. It was the character animation as she waslked up and down the steps. Her feet actually landed on individual solid surfaces, and not the usual "move on a flat ramp up and down" sort of typical mechanic. Also, did you notice the little, but awesome detail of the step she took just before walking up the steps and the last step as she got on the other side (slightly longer strides)? Fucking perfect animation.
That's exactly what I thought. It was almost like watching a model move. Amazing! You can just see one of the characters taking a bite out of someone's neck. LOL
Ah, vampires done right. Is it really an unreachable dream, or a soon to be reality?
realistic hair and cloth but still a stiff bust, this is great but I hope we get bust physics and tail physics and ear physics for the garou and women in genral, you know?
It'll be intresting to see how the animations will work with several players on and the combat interactions. Looking good!
(BBBBBBBBBWWWWWWWAAAAAAHHHHHHH raise plunger salute to animation/clothing modeling video!)
Wonderful job, I'm looking forward to the betas even more now. Though, if Ambulation does finally get put into Eve, will they follow through, and, add this, if they did, Even WOWanites will be absolutely jealous. remarkable on even the fine details.
I can even now hear the chorus of Devs and GMs all across the world saying "Why can't we do games like this added to it"
Well... the facebook group is really seeing some success...
We're up to 167 members this second, and it's climbing by the minute.
I was honored enough to chat with Shane DeFreest this morning... a really friendly guy who's the marketing manager and community developer for White Wolf Publishing and CCP North America.. and he joined the group as well... I think that's potentially what also is pulling in extra members..
Anyways.. make sure you join it guys...

Shit!
I have to play this game for the visuals only.
