General : GDC 2010: Battlestar Galactica MMO Announced

Posted Mar 09, 2010 by Michael Bitton

The LA Times is reporting that Bigpoint Games, which is co-owned by SyFy parent company NBC Universal, is developing a new MMOG based on the "Battlestar Galactica" IP.  Based on the LA Times report, the game is said to be a free-to-play (item mall supported) browser-based MMOG, with a launch date set for August or September.

Ugh, a browser based game.  I'm sorry, I know they are popular with a certain sect of gamers, but I cannot see myself ever playing one.

It's unfortunate, because I think a traditional MMO based on the BSG universe would be quite interesting.

Well, it'll keep down developer costs. A couple guys with flash and java experience, and you too can create your own MMO with item shop!

Battlestar Galactica is part of a new wave of games playable entirely in a Web browser for "free".

It's not free if you pay for anything in the game. Which they obviously are trying to get you to do.

In such games, which are hugely popular in South Korea and China and growing fast in the West, players can choose to purchase additional items such as weapons, costumes and access to new levels.

Goes to show how markedly different our cultures are from the east.

The Battlestar Galactica game is being published by Bigpoint, in which Syfy parent company NBC Universal is co-owner of a majority stake.

NBC is a joke.

"With a browser game, you just get started when you launch," said Nils-Holger Henning, chief communications officer of Bigpoint. "We can constantly add features and content for people who are playing."

As if it was ANY different from a client server setup like WoW... oh wait. It isn't.

Meh,whilst I loved the latest BSG series,I don't think it would make a good hardcore MMO if based on the events int he series,it's just not a great setting for an MMORPG IMO.Maybe if the based it on the first Cylon war it would be doable. But how do you simulate a lone fleet of transport ships with one battlecruiser defending it fleeing into ever changing unknown space from an overwhelming enemy force in a MMO design without it becoming unprofitable to develop and maintain?I would love if someone could pull that off though heh.

Ah Well I guess this means there wills till be no good games based on the series lol.

How about we let Cryptic develop it instead? It will still be released at the same time. /sarcasm

YAY!, finaly, been hoping for one for some time now.........

free-to-play (item mall supported) browser-based MMOG, with a launch date set for August or September

Ehum...what? Free to......browser-b.....launch August..........

Don't think my hopes will be justified, but then again I am sort of getting used to these IP's being a fraction of what they could be in the MMORPG genre

 More info about the BG-MMO

Players will be able to choose to play as cylons or humans in a constant
struggle to control the universe or just survive its perils. A blend of
tactical space combat, exploration, and mission-based gameplay will provide a
diverse experience. The dramatic missions will define the game's overall
storyline, enabling the player to delve into mysteries of the Battlestar
universe. Battlestar Galactica Online will create a new standard for web
games, with beautiful 3d graphics and innovative game mechanics bringing a
new level of game play to browser based MMOG. Assets from the television
production will be integrated into the game to deliver an even more authentic
experience.

Let's count the number of things that will probably doom this game from this short story.

1. The LA Times is reporting that Bigpoint Games
Game developer with no MMO experience.

2. which is co-owned by SyFy parent company NBC Universal
Who will demand huge profits with minimal investment and with NO understanding of game development much less MMO games.

3. is developing a new MMOG based on the "Battlestar Galactica" IP.
Games based on TV shows or movies have almost all been so bad it hurts.

4. the game is said to be a free-to-play (item mall supported)
Item Mall + greedy media companies = crazy high prices

5. browser-based MMOG
Ummm yeah. Do I need to say anything?

6. with a launch date set for August or September.
So I am sure this means they are entering beta like now? That or there will be almost no beta.

This has fail written all over it. Yet another Sci-Fi MMO doomed from the get go. Come on people I am sick of Orcs and Wizards!

If a cheap brower-based game is released, it could set the stage for a more full-blown development down the road.

Let's face it, big investments in MMOs are just gone now. So many titles, so few successes, it's understandable that developers are leery of going triple A right out of the gate.

However, I saw nothing to indicate the long term plans of the game. As always, it's best to wait and see, though limiting a game to a browser and following the cash shop model is usually a non-starter for many.

Are we becoming obsolete dinosaurs here at MMORPG.com? The industry is clearly moving in a direction we all seem to dislike. Are we no longer the target market? Evidence would indicate that we're not... :(

I admit, when I first heard the news that it was going to be an item mall, browser game, I was rather disappointed. Battlestar Galactica would have been grand as a client based game, and I've always loved games that took place in a science fiction setting. But then, I remembered Runescape; even though it was a browser game, it still was pretty epic. There was so many things to do in that game, and it still ranks as one of my favourite MMO games. I'm hoping that Battlestar Galactica would be able to carry it out in a similar fashion to Runescape.

I'm perfectly fine with item mall games, because at least I am able to control my spending habits. So yes, I guess I could continue to wait for news on this game. Though if Starbuck was anything other than male, I would not touch the thing with a ten foot pole. I absolutely loved Starbuck in the original, and when they actually changed his gender, it almost broke my heart. It's like Han Solo being female. Urg... *vomit*

I'm fine with F2P, but disappointed that it will be browser based. At least the 3D engine that will be used is a decent one for a browser. From the description of the game, it sounds like it will have a style somewhat like STO. I had great hopes for STO and it was a major disappointment, so I'm taking a wait-and-see attitude on this one. At least with F2P, it won't cost me anything to try it out and follow its progress (I rarely waste money on item shops).

I have to admit I was a bit surprised by New BSG being browser based F2P model but we are in the time of Low Cash Low Risk. I expect this period will last for a few years yet and it is a shame that they're going down that route. Still no sci-fi games gettting proper treatment. Oh well, if they're gonna murder an IP, at least it's this one and not the original.

I have watched and loved both versions of BSG.  More so the original than the remake but I understand the need to re-visit stories.  That said, I never saw a MMO made of the remake being very good.  There was little beyond the war between the Cylons and humans.  Very little exploration to be honest and more with human condition than extraterrestial encounters.  In this understanding, I feel the original would have had more MMO potential.

As it stands, it looks very much like a quick grab before the public forget about the series.  "Caprica" probably allows for this decision as its a related property that keeps the franchise in the public eye.  Low balling the game allows for the producers to do this with little investment but gain all the reward.  Just too bad it will not be a AAA game.

Dark Orbit's reasonably successful, and the BSG IP will bring them a ton of potential users.

Still, darn.  A full-blown MMO for this IP might have been nice... though full MMO's based on existing IP's don't always turn out so well: witness what happened to Cheyenne Mtn with Stargate:Worlds.  Or, well, Cryptic and STO.  But at least Cryptic released product.

Did you watch the original BSG? I did. Did you watch the remake? I did (I even watched Galactica 1980 *shudder*.)

I loved the original when I first saw it, it was delightful to watch and I had a great time watching it. But the remake is so far beyond the original in every conceivable way that I'm really not sure how anyone who saw both shows could call it "the worst remake in television history" unless they can't see past the nostalgia they feel for the original show.

In other words the remake is an absolute modern masterpiece, the original was incredibly campy, and somewhat silly, yet fun.
