EVE Online : In-Game Cash to Help Haiti

Posted Jan 30, 2010 by Jon Wood

CCP, the development company behind EVE Online is giving players a unique opportunity to use their in-game funds to help the people of Haiti recovering from the recent devastating earthquake.

Dear EVE Players,

Along with the rest of the world, we at CCP have been following the devastating impact of the earthquake of January 12 on the people of Haiti. The situation is as dire as ever for Haiti's brave population, even with the rush of goodwill and aid from many countries, international organizations and countless individuals-including many of you. In 2004 we assisted a collection amongst EVE players to help with the Southeast Asia Tsunami relief efforts and we have figured out a way to use our PLEX system to facilitate such a collection again.

Beginning January 29th, 2010 and ending February 15th, 2010, CCP will accept PLEX donations from players and convert them to a cash donation for the Red Cross efforts in Haiti. 100% of the proceeds will be given to this important charity as a representative gift from EVE's player community.

· To participate, contract your PLEX to the "CCP PLEX for Haiti" character, and please make sure the character is in the "C C P" corporation and that the name is spelled correctly to avoid scams.

· Contracts will be accepted within 24 hours of submission, though usually sooner than that.

CCP regards any scamming attempts surrounding this effort to be morally reprehensible and they will be met with swiftest action.

This is about one community of people helping another in need.

I urge you to use your hard earned ISK (or any of the other various ways which you can acquire a PLEX) to do something greater than it could ever do in New Eden.

Back in the day all that was required to reach the whole community was a dev blog. Now more is needed to reach the ears of the 330,000 players. Please help pass the word to your fellow EVE Players.

Sincerely,

Hilmar Veigar Pétursson

Wow very cool.  CCP has really impressed me over time from growing EVE into what it is, caring about their product and their players, and being a passionate company in this genre where almost all others are greedy sellouts.

I was thinking about resubbing again for a while.  I think I will now and give half of my saved up isk over the years towards this.

Eve is a great game and community, I am sure alot of goodwill people will help out and it costs only ingame effort to do so. BUT tbh I am a bit sick of all the corruption that happens when good people try to help in problems like this the money just don't go to the intended people, instead it lines corrupt haiti government and crime rings.

With the billions of dollars the US and others have donated over the vast years trying to help the people of haiti not much has improved because it was all corrupt. And it won't be long until another corruption syndicate steals all the money were sending now in bolcrap contracts to rebuild and general scams in the government to line pockets of idiots instead of the good people who are in dire need.

I concur. I'm actually tempted to use that 5-day reactivation offer.

Not putting this on CPP but I can bet you donations to other parts of the world who need it also will be really low this year and we have to remember everyone needs our help not just Haiti I mean yeah lots of life died and its sick and we  need to keep helping but what about the kids in the other parts of the world who starve to death slowly. and the ones who die with the worms eating them from the inside out...

Agreed, I felt the same way. Quite unexpected and definitely an unusual move for them to make.

Respect.

While some has wondered - is there someone to secure these contacts? While I can assist in such a manner to contact your PLEX'es to CCP - really there isn't a point in me doing it - since you can do it yourself (I doubt a CCP character will scam with all their DB master commands).

What I can provide though is a "ranking" (and maybe a small prize to the winner) of who donated the most PLEX'es.

So help the Haitians and contract a PLEX or two today to the character "CCP PLEX for Haiti" or me to participate in the "contest"!

All PLEX'es that are contracted to me will be donated to CCP for their efforts to help the Haiti disaster.

or donate any sum with the "reason" PLEX to me and I'll buy PLEX'es from the market to donate to CCP for the aid! (for those of you who cannot affors a full PLEX but still want to help).

For those donating ISK, Please make sure you start your "reason" with "PLEX", I will of course do my best to spot out those donations as well, but it needs to start with "PLEX" in order to register automaticly!

/c

Its a 30-day (game time) "Pilot's License Extension" (PLEX) and it can be bought with in-game currency or real money from CCP.

30-day Pilot's License Extension = game time, which you can buy for ingame currency.

The method:

  • One can buy 60 day Game Time Code for $35 from CCP.
  • It can be cut in two and converted to PLEX.
  • PLEX can be transfered ingame, and sold on market for ingame currency.

This way you can buy ingame currency for $$$. You can also play the game without paying for it a cent. You choose.

PLEXEs are CCPs version of a 30 day GTC (Game time card). the only difference from GTCs in other games is that this is an ingame item. you can right click it and select, add game time, to apply the GTC to your account. or you can sell it on the market for ingame currency.
I don't know why all games don't have this as it is a great system, which allows for a few interesting things.
once PLEXEs are on the market players with a lot of ingame money can buy them and add time to their accounts, therefore paying for their subscription with ingame money.
on the other hand players with lots of real money (who cant be arsed to work in game as their time is a lot more valuable out of game)can buy the plexes for real money and put them on the market to get in game money.
the idea is that with a legal way of buying ingame currency people will not resort to goldseling sites and get their accounts hacked.
what is important however is that this is not micro transactions. you don't pay money to CCP and they create ingame currency for you. that would cause inflation in the game, and generally piss of a lot of people. you trade the plex to another player for isk that he already made in the game.
you also cant get insanely rich doing this. didn't stop this one guy from trying though. he bought like hundreds of plexes cause he wanted lots of isk, and once he put so many on the market their value dropped big time (supply/demand), so he didn't really get much for them.
its a great system where everybody wins. if you have lots of real money you can get isk in the game. if you have lots of in game money you use it to pay for subscription. and CCP doesn't lose anything because they are not selling subscription for ingame money, somebody still had to buy those plexes for real money so its the same for them. every month of every account still gets paid. there is no inflation as the isk isn't "just" generated. the only one who loses is the goldsellers as they now have a competitor-the players themselves, who are allowed to sell isk to other players, for game time.
so again, I really don't see why every MMO doesn't do this. I mean I guess there is the initial hassle to get the system in place...

so if you understand the system you see CCP isn't actually donating anything to charity, what they did is put the system in place that allows the players to donate real money using ingame money.

also, people are going to be buying plexes and because of supply/demand the prices of plexes are doing to go up. so just before this is over it will be good to sell plexes, while the moment this started, it was good to buy them (as their value was about to go up). Probably to late now...

PLEX still keeps its price rock steady at 275M in Jita. It seems supply can keep up with the demand (up by about 25-30%).
