The team at Fallen Earth are eager to enhance the visual experience for their players, and as a result they have launched yet another graphics update to the game, following the graphics update released as part of a patch last week.
We'd like to thank MMORPG.com member skinnys for providing the below before-and-after screenshot:
This latest update enhances the game's lighting and shadow effects.
Dang, i keep falling more and more in love with this game! <3
Any screenshots to show the differences between the old and the new?
This helps alot, but I still want goals. Incentives to level and go through the motions to become more powerful. I want to love FE but without any lofty armorsets or impressive weapons, or exciting dungeons to aim for, I'm left sitting in the dirt pondering why I log in.
Unfortunately not yet, not officially released anyways. If any users would care to contribute some please send them to mikeb@mmorpg.com. I will gladly credit you in the news story! :)

I guess they don't have those things because it's a game where you're just meant to live through your avatar in that version of the world. It's sandbox.
The graphic overhaul is pretty, and I hope their character physics are next.
Naw I don't buy it that they're trying to make a virtual world rather then a game. A virtual world wouldn't need combat, mob loot, leveling up.. you can't just make a big video game world without goals and say "oh it's a sandbox, you're meant to live in it and not persue goals". Otherwise it'd just be Second Life. Second Life is a big sandbox where you're just meant to socialize and live in it, a game with equipment, gear, combat, leveling and factions and all that is meant to offer goals and motivation. It's just lacking.
Sorry for the "before" part, i didn't really have any screenshots with the shadows in focus. But as you (hopefully) can see the shadows now look alot softer.
Do you mind me using your image in the story?
Knock yourself out :)
wow i might have to try this game, i looks pretty amazing and the developers seem top notch and seem to give a damn about their players.
instead of acting like "hey we got your money from box sales well give you patches when we feel like you deserve it". *coughMythic/NCsoftcough*
The devs really communicate with their players here. If there are any issues they'll always post about it in the forums, and sometimes even in the launcher, so you'll know exactly why you aren't able to log in.
There's a free 10 day trial at www.fallenearth.com/trial you should really give it a go in my opinion :)
Thanks! :)
Nice job, devs.
I want to play this game, I like the idea of it, but the targetting and clunky combat I experienced in beta doesn't appear to have been changed/fixed yet. Drat.
I am really impressed with the updates they've put out so far. I never really expected any graphical upgrades. I figured this was how they released the game and thats how it was going to be. When I first heard they were redoing the shrubbery I was so excited. I had noticed the day before, by close inspection that it looked quite similar to counter-strike source's shrubbery and it just wasn't appealing. The shadows have also been a bit blah.
The fact that this stuff has been changed so quickly, dramatically and effectively is just astounding. I praise the Icarus team on their work so far and I can't wait to see what else they have in store for us! :)
Loving the grapichal overhaul <3
This game just keeps getting better and better, every time I log onto the STO beta I log off after 10 minutes and go back to FE :P Seriously though, the game looks SO much better and not as brown as before.

Oh, I agree. I don't play the game and that's part of why. I'm just saying what I figured their logic, and most of their players logic behind the game design is.
Looks like specularity is improved too. A nice sheen on the metal surfaces.
Ken
so.....when's the performance overhaul coming??

From what I've seen thus far, it seems to be pretty decent at what it's trying to do. Part of the point of a sandboxy game like this is that the players make sub community groups themselves, and not just rely on the on rails feeling of the theme park style games. I haven't had a chance to play it yet, unfortunately, I'm messing with other things. I'll probably play it after the 6 or 12 month mark, though.
I, as a beta tester never had problems with the graphics.
it was all the missing operational engines that cripple this title
missing: vehicle physics engine not to menton customization
missing: grenade physics engine this includes acids and poisons bio
missing: shot gun physics engine
missing: water physics engine
this is just part of a long list of crippling game flaws that kept me from following FE to live.
this and the lack of a customization window or clothing toggles and the lack of stratigic travel (steam train)
I stoped trusting developers that say "buy now, well fix later." ultimatly it never gets fixed and expansions are all bigger rats and bigger guns and more pvp and raid content instead of sandboxing content
if you want to make a difference in a world check out wurm online, it doesnt pull any punches and it has its flaws but your simple actions can change the world forever freedom server sumer.
Games are not slideshows. Anyone know if the animations has been improved? Particulary combat animations?
Thanks to everyone for posting some pics. <:)'
Same problems here. Graphics are nice and everything, but the game has too many design flaws to get me back still. No economy, bad crafting design. No death penalty, physics problems. Little endgame or pvp content. Horrible AI. Leveling and AP grind. This is not a sandbox.
Personally, I love the combat. I absolutely LOATHE auto target in games. If I can just click on a mob and walk away, go make coffee, and come back and the mob is dead....I have issues with that. Both the melee and ranged rifles are a blast to me, in this game (no pun intended). I really have fun with scoped rifles. :)
I also like that the mobs don't just stand in one place and attack you...they move AROUND you, try to get behind you, etc. They're positions aren't static, so you have to actually move around and TARGET them.
This game is just full of win for me. First game I've actually felt really satisfied with in years. But...we're all different, so....your mileage may vary.
I hope this game does really well. I got into the open beta and played the live version for about a week but my pc just could not handle it so I left. I will say though that if I had a comp that could handle it I would be there right now i truly enjoyed my limited time there.
If I see some screenshots of the new graphics update I may go back and check it out.
(AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH raises plunger salute to new graphics update)
I personally have no performance problems at all now that they've fixed up the grass & shadows. Before these changes I was averaging 30 and below FPS, now I'm averaging a constant 30-60FPS at all times. They even said that it was meant to improve performance and it did just that. Cities are still a bit weak for some people when they walk in, but even in cities I'm averaging 30+FPS. I should mention that even prior to the upgrades, I have been playing with all settings on max.

The crafting design itself isn't so flawed, its really the fact that there is no item decay so people can just keep making item after item after item and they stay in the game unless someone chooses to destroy them. This in turn kills the economy. Icarus is more than aware of the problem and they're actually in the middle of overhauling that. They're putting item decay in, they've already started flushing out a lot of the "extra" chips by way of their new slot machine & black jack machine.
My main problem with crafting is that anyone can do everything. I'd really prefer like... being able to specialize in a few different things than being able to make everything.
Lee Hammock stated that they're very aware of the problems currently in the game and that they will be improving it.
I'll agree with you on the physics problems, hopefully they'll adjust those while they're doing all of these overhauls. I don't really have any problems with the AI usually, I've actually felt that they were quite decent. Occasionally I'll have one run away from me, but then again, if I wasn't equipped with anything but a set of fists would I want to run straight up to someone shooting at me? :P However sometimes I get annoyed that things like the zombie-looking digger guys don't just start coming after me, I have to get a little to close for them to care that I'm in the room with them. That to me seems like a design flaw. They need a bit of a larger aggro range.
I know that currently there isn't really any end-game, its more just pvp or spin the wheel. Lee Hammock said that prior to Sector 4's arrival, they are overhauling PvP with a huge patch and they're going to put out a content patch for 45's that will both add more content for them to do up in Sector 3 (though he didn't specify any direct details on that) and that they're raising the level cap to I think 50 or 55. They're aware that people run out of stuff to do at 45, so hopefully these things will really be taken seriously and addressed well in these upcoming patches.
The good thing about Icarus so far is that they really are listening to our complaints and actually doing stuff about them. I appreciate that immensely.
Here are three shots from the update that show off some great new features.
ROFL! Let me guess....you're CHOTA, right? If not...perhaps you should be, because I honestly cannot imagine anyone but the CHOTA "raising a plunger" for any purpose...LOL!
Oh, and btw...there's a free trial right now. Good way to see the new graphics.
I'm not playing this game on a cutting edge machine, and I have everything maxed except having turned off the one (of the TWO) post FX settings so that I didn't have to force anti-aliasing on my card. Although...I may have to just check that out to see if it still runs smooth....because right now....setting at almost totally maxed settings...I am having no problems whatsoever, and it is GORGEOUS.
My machine is a Pentium Core2Duo 2.66 Ghz (2 CPU), with Vista, 4G RAM, and only ONE nVidia 8800 GT. Nothing even remotely special about that set up. The only "special" thing I do, is keep it VERY clean (file-wise), consistently running AVAST and SuperAntiSpyware, and I defrag....daily. And while doing a daily registry check/clean up, disc clean up, and defrag may seem extreme, I use Auslogics Boost Speed to do it, and it's very quick and keeps things tidy. I really think gamers need to defrag more than your average PC user.
Some people are just not big fans of the Arizona desert and its vegetation and whatnot, because I've never understood the complaints about the look and feel of the environment, but I will say, it's sooooo much more real now than it was right before these last two gfx patches. I can almost smell the desert air.....
I used to live in Arizona....and the game just looks and feels....spot on.
It's not the graphics engine that scared me off (what is it anyways? quake I engine?). It's the horrific character animations.
/timesync helps - and a decent comp w/o lag....but personally I love the animation in this game.
I'm having a near impossible time going back to tab trgt - auto attack MMO's after the smooth quality targeting of FE and Darkfall
