General : Square Enix & Gamepot Partner for New MMOG Fantasy Earth Zero!

Posted Jan 12, 2010 by Michael Bitton

Square Enix and Gamepot USA have partnered up to deliver a new free-to-play fantasy MMOG dubbed "Fantasy Earth Zero" to MMOG fans in Q1 2010.

Fantasy Earth Zero, which is being announced exclusively here at MMORPG.com, will focus on PvPvE (Player vs. Player vs. Environment) gameplay and utilize a new "Hyper-Active Battle System," which aims to deliver an exhilarating combat experience akin to the "best scenes in Gladiator or Braveheart, with the action ratched up to 20."

Fantasy Earth Zero Fantasy Earth Zero

A familiar theme for Square Enix games, Fantasy Earth Zero is set in the world of Melpharia, which has erupted into all out war over powerful crystals strewn throughout the world.

Players will be able to choose from three distinct and highly customizable classes, and five unique kingdoms, with the ability for up to 50 vs. 50 PvP battles. The game's soundtrack is being scored by Hitoshi Sakamoto, of Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII fame.

Below is a breakdown of Fantasy Earth Zero's features:

Robust Character Customization: FEZ provides nearly endless opportunities to create unique characters, allowing gamers to tailor their Fantasy Earth Zero experience as much – or as little – as they like.

Anime-inspired, energetic art style: Breathtaking, high-quality graphics from the unmatched skill of Square Enix artists.

Three Distinct Classes: The Power of a Warrior, The prodigious skills of a Mage, and the impeccable aim of an Archer are yours to command.

Five Unique Kingdoms Vying for Allegiance:
o The Kingdom of Netzawar: The brave Lion King Huenkel commands these warriors, driven by a selfless love of battle..
o The United Kingdom of Cesedria: Led by the beautiful elf, Queen Tiffarith, these fighters are dedicated to protection.
o The Gerburand Empire: A nation forged from endless wars, Emperor Lyle Geburand leads his people in a war of conquest.
o The Kingdom of Ielsord: Led by King Niass, These brilliant warriors live by one creed: Knowledge is Power,
o The Kingdom of Hordaine: This youthful country is led by the gorgeous Queen Wadritte, in a battle for her ideals.

Breath-taking Battlegrounds: Wage war in cities, the countryside, snow fields, grasslands, and across day, dusk and night.

Hyper-Active Battle System: From 5v5 up to 50v50 player-versus-player (PvP) action in multiple battlegrounds, Fantasy Earth Zero is more akin to an action game than a traditional RPG. It’s an experience that puts the control of a multiple nation war directly into the player’s hands. Fast-paced action where players dodge, attack and use their skill and resources to win battles and change the tide of war.

Voice Acting: 5 Kings, 5 leaders, 5 distinctive voices. Your chosen king will encourage you on and off the battlefield, monitor your overall progress, as well as give sound advice to emerge victorious.

Music by Hitoshi Sakimoto: Best known for scoring Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy XII, Hitoshi Sakimoto has composed soundtracks for more than 70 games, arranged music for more than 40 others and now lends his unique talent to Fantasy Earth Zero.

Website Stat-Tracking: Check out your wins, losses, kill/death ratio and more online!

In addition to today's announcement, we have also been provided with a batch of concept art for the game, available exclusively at MMORPG.com, which you can view here!

For more information, check out the game's official website here.

It looks like PvP fans will enjoy this title. Sounds promising for a F2P. Especially since its coming from SE.

Nobuo Uematsu is the only FInal Fantasy composer worth mentioning.

Well, here's hoping a f2p SquareEnix game can be better than the thousand+ asian grindtastics out there already.

You're right, but it still looks fun for an old game.

If Wiki is correct, I guess its Fenix Soft that Developed it?

Still interested. I like the concept.

Yup. FF Tactics had good music. As did Vagrant Story.

Just listening to those tunes takes me back in a very good way.

Oh God, if SE brought out a FF Tactics MMO, I would have a hardcore nerdgasm. That would just about be gamer heaven for me.

Hey, it's Gamepot. Guess we'll hear more about this game from the weekly "F2P" advertisements column.

So:

- 4, close to 5 years old, so "new" without mentioning West is quite misleading.
- A P2P failed game that got re-released as F2P (not that it proves anything, see DDO, but still it goes again in the quite not so "new" mislead).
- Originally developed by Multiterm, that got absorbed by Fenix Soft. Where does Square Enix fit in the development thing (it's only a Publisher according to the Wikipedia page)? Just for translation and adaptation purposes, I guess, which if I am not wrong, is giving a wrong idea to Square Enix fans.

I'm curious as what the item mall advantages to generate revenue are, as it's PvP we are talking about, as there was zero information about such an important feature.

By the way, we have been informed the Fantasy Earth Zero teaser site is now available!

This game sounds interesting, and having Square Enix's name attached to it gives it some credibility, however, the F2P designation turns me off. I mean, any game with an item mall has sold xp potions, among many other items that do not exactly make you more powerful, but increase the likely-hood that you'll become more powerful faster than non-payers. I hate that kind of revenue system, and would rather P2P it or buy the box, and then it be F2P like Guild Wars was when it first released.

The game is indeed a few years old and was originally developed by Square Enix.  If I remember correctly, it was only released in Asia and didn't meet expectations and rights were sold to another company to run it.

Basically, Square Enix is doing what Turbine did for DDO - converting to F2P and re-releasing it over here.

I haven't researched the game, but from the looks o it from here, it seems like there isn't much open world, if any and it's going to play like a fighter/shooter almost in instances....kinda like global agenda, I guess. That's just what I think, anyway. I don't know for sure.

Thanks for the site link.

After watching some youtube videos, it makes me think of Final Fantasy RvR.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8Y7Bid4qO4

The battles seem to have many layers, with strategic locations, and destructible buildings etc.

It really looks like it could be a wickedly fun game to me. Can't wait to play.

btw what does it takes for this game to get listed here on MMORPG.com?

When the game goes live, if we can have organized clans/guilds or whatever I might be interested in joining a group like this.

Group of people all following the same strategy is so much more powerful then a random group all doing their own thing.
