EVE Online : There's An App For That

Posted Oct 30, 2009 by Dana Massey

MMORPG.com EVE Online Correspondent Kevin Schram writes this look at four different fan made applications that make the EVE Online experience that much easier.

Unlike that other MMO, EVE Online does not allow modification of the game's client for user-made mods. To fill this void, the EVE Online community (which is filled with IT professionals – just ask around in your corp) has created a ton of fan made applications. Some of them are great, others can be avoided. This list will run down the four best fan-made applications, plus a few other honorable mentions.

Read it all here.

EveHQ fitter has one very critical short coming - it does not include cpu and power grid usage next to the installed modules.

So when a fitting is 37% over on powergrid - I can't see which modules are the biggest powergrid drains and easily make changes.

And a critical UI flaw is having to go way into a menu to unactivate modules to see different cap usage levels. I can't readily switch that MWD on or off without going through levels of menus.

These are two big things preventing me from uninstalling EFT.

EveMon is the be all end all utility for this game.  You can toss EveHQ in the ok bin that is about all.

I still like my EFT.  Sure, once in a while it borks things up and I can't actually fit a ship, but those occurances are rare and its so easy to use.

Good article, but there's some other WH tools better than Wormhole thingy IMO that provide the same info but don't require installation.

EVEMON is a great tool, and yet, I rarely need to use it.  I pretty much can figure out my own training plans and only use EVEMON to check out radical new training plans (like captilal ships)

but I do like the swell liittle tray icon that shows me key training stats at a glance.

Evemon is in my experience the very best app; optimize skill training times, skill paths to use ships/modules, and even an algorithm to optimize your respec attributes based on your current skillplan. It shows SP/hr (to optimize this), wallet balance for quick reference, and a host of other things.

EFT is a beast of a program too, incredibly helpful and nerdy, and "easy to use," but it's also easy to get lost in what all the numbers mean.

I'll have to give EveHQ a try tho. Sounds good.

A few other apps I've enjoyed:

EveWalletAware <- I'm a market guru and this one helps me balance out my sales for the past 2 weeks or so.

OutOfEve.com <- In-browser app that allows you to browse detailed info on your char, including all wallet transactions, corp info, killmails, etc. The beauty of this app is that you don't have to DL & Install... go over your friends' house and check your char in an instant.

There is also Capsuleer, a nice tracking app for the iPhone.

Open Fitter, Options (upper left corner) , Slot Layout . You will be surprised.

Sometimes I want to try eve out again, but stuff like this just makes me think it's far too complicated for my tiny brain to fully grasp. I'm sure I've only ever played the game at 20% efficiency.

I should clarify, Capsuleer works for both the iPhone and iPod Touch.

EFT was not the first fitting tool for eve, the first one was program called Quickfit

Thanks!

If you feel comfortable with compilers and modifying code, the source is available on quite a few for you to download.
