Curious how Dark Age of Camelot might look if it were running on CryEngine2 (the engine powering Crysis)? If you're nodding yes, then check out some screenshots and video of this awesome fan made mod by Silakka that is doing just that!
Some of the scenery recreated in the mod includes the Hibernia frontier, Midgard, Relic keep, Aerus City, and Thidranki.
That is insane, just checking his site out, looks like his doing alot of work on it.
Just makes you wounder if a casual hobbysit can do this, why cant mythic? Looking at his screenshots and videos it looks preety amazing tbh.
good artwork stands the test of time, for sure. looks realy good even in itsl ow poly objectsy state
That's pretty amazing. It's like night and day. Wish he video was longer and that he went outside to look around.
edit: nvm, subsequent videos do feature the outside.
That looks awesome. Daoc was the best period. No game since has ever held my attention for near as long as Daoc did.
Mythic come on. Time for a revamp and update. Dump WAR already.
That makes you wonder, why Mythic didn't make DAOC 2 instead of that crap, Warhammer............
warhammer is daoc2 in warhammer skin. virtually 90% of the concepts in warhammer would be in a game called daoc2, so it dont make no difference. Simple fact is Mythic have had baffons running them for years now, and1 big idiot doing podcasts for the same amount of time in Paul barnet. Dont be fooled into thinking a game named daoc2 would be any different, because warhammer for all intesne and purposes is a game that wa supposedly built around rvr, and like i said it employs the same thought and ideas 90% a game named daoc2 would have had.
I stopped playing MMOs a year or so ago, but if this happened.. I would be resubbing.
The video demos on his site are amazing!
Thidranki Castle looks kinda small though :P
My thought. When some hobby programmers can do such things... why can't professionals? Its what I think often when I see mods.
Anyone with a bit of creativity can build a zone or area and make it look nice. The difference is making it come to life, this is not an easy feat.
In other words, you could have a beautiful game made from the cry engine, but if the devs don't put their hearts into it, it will just be shiny poop.
My thought. When some hobby programmers can do such things... why can't professionals? Its what I think often when I see mods.
Passion for something>Money for doing something. Blending the two is when you get the best results.
Mythic needs to hire this guy! I will pay money to see DAOC upgraded to the Cry Engine!
My thought. When some hobby programmers can do such things... why can't professionals? Its what I think often when I see mods.
They can. All he did was import the game assets from DAOC into the Crysis engine, been done before with the oblivion assets. So why don't the developers do this? Well they could but they'd end up with a clone of their game and a huge fee for the engine. Not to mention they have to reprogram a lot of the gameplay, ui, AI etc.
And how many players have a PC that can run 200 players with the CryEngine2? ;)
Bad just look Aion. I never had a problem of FPS with my e8400 + 4gig + 4870 516mb. My build is not so expansive. If you search correctly you can have a good box for 700$ to 900
I still play daoc off and on, there is no othere game for me really havent found one. if they make a daoc 2 with the sam,e time period then i would glady go to that..
Professionals can, but not without giving Crytek money and lots of it.
It's Crytek - don't give Mythic an excuse to instance DAoC.
Seconded.
Because for some reason some developers thing that slapping a long standing IP on a game makes it an instant hit.
that looks very badass, I loved DAoC so much it was the first game i fell in love with, besides UO cuz it gave birth to mmos =). I like to think of darkfall as my DAoC 2 because it has massive siege battles, and I only played DAoC for PvP even tho I would pve jsut to gear up for PvP
Unfortunately its far more easy to build a map in existing game that looks like DAoC map than actually importing a game and all its features to the engine.
and aion uses cryengine1, crysis cryengine2
OMG...is it possible to take the Crytek engine and build a seamless world, then take the combat of Mount and Blade and mesh them together? Once this is done is it possible to use python scripting to make seamless world version of Mount and Blade/Age of Empires/UO? LOL!
How did he get a hold of the Crysis engine to do this conversion?I have spent most of my years fooling around on the Unreal engine ,i would like to try this engine.
Crysis comes with a SDK.
Crysis comes with a SDK.
Editor is in CD and SDK can be loaded from crymod.com
Also I'm using few extra tree sets from crymod.com as Crysis default trees didn't work for all tree models.
Very nice work Silakka!!! Wouldn't mind playing multiplayer Crysis on these maps if you ever get them wrapped up and available!
Thanks :)
Sadly I can't give those to anyone as it contains Mythic 3D models.
My thought. When some hobby programmers can do such things... why can't professionals? Its what I think often when I see mods.
It's the same with Battlefield1942. That game is a perfect example of how 2 mods made that game one of the most popular FPS games at that time!
BF1942 in it's original form was crap, boring and not that fun at all.
Then came some insanely talented mod teams along and dumped mods like Forgotten Hope and Desert Combat on us and the game's popularity went straight through the roof!
I remember a time that there were more Forgotten Hope servers running, then original ones lol.
BF1942 with Forgotten Hope mod was one of the most fun FPS games I ever played. I played it for years!
Cheers
warhammer is daoc2 in warhammer skin.
No, it isnt.
The gameplay is hardly alike when playing both you can clearly see warcraft influences on warhammer, i.e dumbed down gameplay.
Cryengine is from FARCRY not CRYSIS!
ROFL! You just won the prize for Most Stupid Post of The Day! Congratulations!
Maybe you should go read up the difference between a Game Engine, a Game, a Company making a game engine and a Company developing a game using a (licenced) game engine.
Farcry and Crysis are games.
Would be a world first to see a game developing a whole game engine. LMAO!
Cheers
Judging by the calibre of your posts I can't tell if you're a troll or not.
Although you did say in an Aion thread (since you're a Aion fanboy/girl) that Aion uses the Farcry engine.
Just wiki Cryengine and you can then stop making a complete fool of yourself.
No, it isnt.
The gameplay is hardly alike when playing both you can clearly see warcraft influences on warhammer, i.e dumbed down gameplay.
I agree. Warhammer's design drew far too heavily from WOW and was not focused enough on what made DAOC great (which should have been improved on)
I guess we should be grateful in a way, would have been a real shame to ruin the DAOC franchise by making it like Warhammer turned out.
LOL is all I can say. cryengine was use to make farcry and crysis, cryengine is not from farcry its from crytek, farcry is a video game.
My feeling is, if you took DAOC and remade it in its whole in CryEngine2, still relatively few people would play it.
Graphical quality does matter, but also modes of gameplay change over time, so that certain approaches to gameplay become passé. It's almost like fashion itself. Once something gets outmoded, it can only be re-imagined, instead of re-born. Sad but true. I've seen the whole icon adventure genre go down because of this.
I think DAoC gameplay is still ok, they just need to update 3D models/graphics some time to time to get new people into game.
Also to get old timers back, Mythic need to do something about old frontiers and hopefully also old battle grounds.
I hope I did wake up Mythic even little bit with those Crysis videos and screen shots :)
DAoC game play, RvR that is, would be a whole better game if they used that engine and tacked on Mount and Blades combat system...and added siege engines and destructable walls. OMG...gimmee!
Destructible walls and siege engines are already in the game.
Just pushed new video to blog (http://mharjula.blogspot.com/) .. remember to check some time to time new videos / screenshots :)
... also just finished uploading special video version .. soon in blog.
Destructible walls and siege engines are already in the game.
Oh...when was that added?
I agree give us a new DAoC with these graphics and do something to destroy the botters and I would come running back.
Oh...when was that added?
If im right they're referring to not the native game, but some mods, ive read about such mods while skimming threads for ones to try with my own mount and blade gameplay. So in the existing game by themselves its not there but can be done using mods.
Btw DAoC with those graphics is lookin sweet, i remember playing quite awhile back, enjoyed my valewalker and vampir, cant recall the 3rd character i used though. was a neat game
Siege engines have been in the game for as long as I can remember. Trebuches rams and catapults. That's how you take a keep in the game. No fighting from horse back but you can definitely put holes in the side of a keep and you can completely bash a tower down to the ground.
Could it be possible to create a Crysis mod (or any other game mod) using these graphics and maps, and then create (or use) DAoC style models, and make it an instant-jump-in action FPS-RPG?
1) Join Server
2) Pick Realm (Midgard, Hibernia, Albion)
3) Pick Race (stats)
4) Pick Class (skills)
That's it. There is no equipment, no stats or items. All things are imbedded into the race/class choices.
For simplicity, you could simply make it where each class is automatically assigned a race. (Wouldnt be as cool though.)
You could also start out with a VERY simple setup.
Midgard: Warrior, Runemaster, Healer
Hibernia: Hero, Eldritch, Druid
Albion: Armsman, Wizard, Cleric
Then just add in classes later.
In essence, you could balance classes more easily by making them almost identical. (Warrior/Hero/Armsman are same, Wizard/Eldritch/Runemaster are same, etc. etc.)
Then later versify it with the hybrid classes (Champion / Thane / Paladin & Theurgist / Animist / Bonedancer)
Make it play very simply (Each class has [x] attacks, make it more action-based and less turn based)
basically- it would be DAoC without all the crap. Balanced sides, balanced numbers (server cap divided by 3) and EVERYONE has the same armor/weapons (no twinks!) and same abilities. It's "jump in and play DAoC" or even better if it's more action-based twitch combat.
Sure a lot of slow-paced DAoC players would hate it... but if you gave it that "Camelot feel" then thousands would LOVE it!
Is it possible to do that? A combat system similar to DDO or Darkfall- but in an FPS engine (Crysis, Unreal, etc.)?
The point of the game could be "Capture the Keep" where one side in the server owns the keep. There could even be BOTS in the game in the keep just like DAoC.
Everything is possible what Crysis can do, and SDK contains tools to create mods.
Basically team fortress with 3 sides and only one keep :)
LoL.... it's not like they having already done that or anything.
Oh wait...
Wasn't DAoC known as "Dark Age of TaskDungeons" one time?
Yep... for a VERY long time...
the original DAoC with a reworked user-interface/control and that gfx - I would resub instantly.
even if i had to start from scratch !
Quoted for Truth!!

niceee
I was going to get CryEngine 3 too.....until I realise I need a 64 bit system to work......now patiently waiting for upgrade :P
Very nice, kinda sad that one person can do that but a company can't/won't....
Midgard (old) frontier video added to blog.

it looks stunning, but... sucks it'll never become a legit reality :|
Yep, I have been hopping Mythic to do something as DAoC is/was great game, though bit too old already.
