Stargate Worlds : Site Returns, Funding Issues Persist

Posted Oct 15, 2009 by Michael Bitton

On Friday, October 9th, the Stargate Worlds official website went down for scheduled maintenance, which was expected to take about a day, it didn't. There is good news and bad news. The good news is the site returned 3 days later on the 12th, the bad news is that Stargate Worlds is continuing to experience funding issues, despite the fact they have recently secured additional investors.

Timothy N. Jenson, President & CEO of Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment offered an illuminating statement on the situation to Massively:

The stargateworlds.com site is owned by MGM and went down on Friday due to a change in DNS server providers. Cheyenne and MGM are working on getting the site back up and it is expected to be back up this week. [Ed. note: the site has already been restored.] As for the Stargate Worlds game and Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, Inc., our company has struggled in the current economic climate to raise the funding needed to successfully develop and publish our MMORPG. While there continues to be a lot of desire, enthusiasm and excitement about the project from our employees, investors and fans, we will not be able to provide any updates on the development of Stargate Worlds until sufficient funding is available.

Via Massively.

So they had enough funding, but now they don't... wha? Pretty sure they need to hire new people to work on finances if something they "had" two months ago is now no longer there.

The more news I hear about the game though, the sadder it gets. Considering the early stuff that's leaked out about the gaming experience, I almost wonder if it's just easier to let this poor girl die or pass her off to someone who can raise and care for her properly.

For love of Stargate Franchise why stay with this studio? We had seen what happens with that of STO, though it went to an good studio and now look at it. When are they MGM going to say enough is enough? This franchise is an money cow, if they had an good studio and backing, but everytime i see something more about this game i wonder more and more.

For the love of god, someone give the IP to a competent company.

That's like giving DUNE ip to Uwe Boll lol.

I so agree, i just dont understand why MGM is not saying enough is enough thier are so many good studios out thier that could pick this up and run with it.  At this stage, i really wonder if it has any chance at all at release. I just cant see it, however and perhaps MGM knows something we dont but come on get off the toilet MGM.

Let it die and allow another studio to pick it up, though i dont understand why MGM is allowing this to occur like this, dont they realize the cash cow it could be?

For the love of god, please fire the folks at chyane mountain and get a studio taht can bring us this game.  I had hight hopes for the last 3 years that something was going to happen for us good. However each time I read an article its more gloom and doom.

It is time for a change or for them to let it die, as it has become the joke of the entire gaming industry.

As a long time former beta tester, all I say nice about SGW was the art direction was pretty good.  Aside from the character models (yeesh), the environments were rather well done and nice looking.  I know nothing about the IP, but I enjoyed a bit of time spent in game.  It wasn't FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC (said with jazz hands), but it sure had potential.  The sci-fi MMORPG market could use the competition.

My understanding of this is MGM owns part of Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment which has no income without this game.  The other project is a adventure game that is being used to catch up on bills.  New investors money is being used to payback former employees and devs that left the team.

MGM is suffering financial crisis and really can't afford another company to step in after what they initially invested.  From a poster on the Massively site; they incurred fraud from a Ponsi scheme exposed with the relestate crash.  In other words, you might blame Berny Madov on this or whoever is at fault.  MGM is now in bankrupcy.

If this is all true, then Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment has as much luck to get this MMO done as a new company.  Its just going to take money from other investors.  In other words, MGM wants to help this potential Cash Cow but is too busy trying to recover and keep thier own entertainment holdings.

MGM...different development company please...they clearly shot their wad and can't be trusted with this great IP. I don't care if it means another company has to start over from scratch. I want to see Stargate in MMO form and I have no confidence in Cheyenne's ability to create the game and most importantly KEEP IT RUNNING.

They really need to give up on this.  A Stargate MMO would be good but not this one.  Even if they manage to release the game it will be no where near complete, and I know somewhere inside me I wouldn't think of Stargate as great as it is.

No good can come out of this game the way it's been developed, it will just result in a failed game that has no real direction, no dev team can gel and create a good game the way this game been managed and funded. Pass on the IP start again!

I would venture a guess that given the value of the I.P. and the attractivness of the whole MMO sector as a money generator that the issue behind the difficulty in funding is either the lack or ability of features that investors think would appeal to gamers and generate subs or an inability to communicate what they are by the devs.

You can have the best I.P. and screenshots in the world but if savvy investors think the product is shit, they are not going to put their money anywhere near it.

That nails it on the head.  When, not if, CMO goes under it will be better for the Stargate IP to get a fresh start.  STO is a great example.  Cryptic got the license and trashed the entire code base from the previous dev.  Of course it will take another 2-3 years for this game to launch but as long as MGM supports the IP with quality TV content it will still survive in an MMO as long as the next dev is established with a history of creating great MMO titles.

Dont fear, there is a company out there right now looking at this game and saying, a few more months and they will sell out to us cheap. Bigger company buys, the game gets a real development team and your game gets made. Look at what happend to perpetual entertainment, they slipped and cryptic picked up the ball, now star trek online is coming out in febuary. If startrek shows success, and i think it will, look for this game to get a better more capable company to develop it.

Yep I think your correct. I am sure other folks are looking at this, salivating waiting for cheyane mountain to fail. Then get everything really cheep.

Right now I would even think it would be cool for SOE to buy it.

It is just to bad they waisted 5 years for nothing so far.
