Sony's inclusion of TCG's (Trading Card Games) in a number of their titles have drummed up a bit of controversy in their respective game communities, and EverQuest is no different. A new dungeon called the Dragon Brood Crypt is being gated by a "Dragon Brood Crypt Key" loot card from the Legends of Norrath EverQuest TCG, and this is causing a bit of a stir within the game's community.
Producers Craig "Grimwell" Dalrymple and Thom Terrazas respond to players' concerns:
Craig & Thom's take:
The EQ LON card in question is called “The Dragon Brood Crypt Key Loot Card”
When you redeem it your character will get a quest that tells them where to go and what to do in order to gain access to a small private instance zone. Access to the zone requires that one person holds the key; they can bring a group with them and nobody else is required to have the key.
While in the zone the group will be able to go through the quest that is triggered by this item that concludes with rewards typical for LON as well as an item for the group members to roll for. I do not have information on those items currently. The zone is designed for a group of Level 85 characters.
Provided that the last steps in this zone are not completed, the key holder can access the zone multiple times with anyone they are grouped with. Individual group members do not have to have a copy of the key to go in with a friend who does. The content and rewards, outside of those provided in the last step are trivial, so the private instance can’t be farmed for reward.
Once the last step is completed and the final rewards are claimed, the key is consumed and the zone will be inaccessible to the key holder.
The key can only be obtained through LON, and while I don’t know the rarity on it, people who have multiple copies of the loot item can run through the instance and receive the final rewards one time for each copy of the key they have.
I know that some of you have more questions, but this should answer the larger ones and give you a fuller picture of what this loot card will do. Thanks again for your patience and understanding while this information was gathered.
Emotions continue to run high in the ongoing discussion thread on the announcement, which you can view here.
"and while I don’t know the rarity on it,"
Oh, please. I bet you do. I bet it is rare as hell.
I hope players tear SOE apart over this. It's disgusting.
lol...s.o.e.
I mean, isn't that really enough? Whenever anyone mentions s.o.e. all we really need to do is chuckle, shake our heads, and move on. S.O.E. is the crazy uncle of mmorpg's . You know...the one we all have.....that nutty bastard who we only see at family gatherings, the one who is pretty much harmless but just damn nutty? You look at him when he does or says something crazy, chuckle , and go back to your conversation with sane people.
lol, s.o.e...you silly, nutty bastards.
*goes back to playing and reading about mmorpgs not made by crazy uncle types*
If SOE gets away with it, you will see other companies doing the same thing.
Wake up, people. These companies don't give a damn about games. It's all about money. Period.
To the fanboys who think 'their' company is different - you're delusional.
LOL- I thought this was a sick joke- Its real. LOLOLOL
Man, $OE how far you have fallen =(
R.I.P. And may your legacy be remembered by most as EQ- Nothing else...
I love the crazy uncle comparison- BUT, I liken $OE to that sweet and beautiful Girl with long locks of Golden hair and baby blue eyes...That girl you fall in love with and swear you are soul mates, that girl you envision you will spend the rest of your life with, cozy in front of a fireplace with your 2.5 kids and white picket fence and shit- THEN after you marry her you find out shes a gold digging prostitute who gave you Aids and divorces you as soon as you lose your job.
The complaint thread on the EQII forums was over 113 pages when I last checked it.
To make it even more interesting, Kiara has been blocked from releasing anything more than what is in the above statement.
I think it's rather silly to be complaining about it to be honest, gated content has been a part of EQ since it's inception by way of one mechanic or another.
This is just a way to reward those who play LoN with a bit of extra reason to go back in & play eq, to me it serves as a way to get more people into eq who only play LoN currently.
The problem is the perception of the players that they are "getting fleeced" somehow, which they aren't this is additional content & there's nothing that says that just because they have a regular sub that the game has no room for content accessed by other means.
Personally I think LON is a pretty decent little card game, and the rewards for getting the card (at least from this brief quote) seem trivial indeed. When i was playing EQ2, and LON concurrently, the loot cards I got were by no means power items. Seriously.
The folks complaining about this will be the same ones that ask "how long will game X last before it FAILS MISERABLY IN THE BURNING ABYSS" 6 months before a game is released (with a poll, of course).
