CrimeCraft : Going Free-to-Play by End of October

Posted Oct 05, 2009 by Michael Bitton

Vogster Entertainment has announced a number of changes and additions coming to CrimeCraft in the near future. One major switch the game will see is the shift to a Free-to-Play business model, which will commence sometime before the end of October.

Two subscription model plans will still be available, a Standard Subscription available for $4.99/month and a Premium Subscription for $9.99/month. Details on the two subscription models are scant, but the press release describes the "major differences" as: "the extent of customization, skill slots, speed of experience gain and inventory capacity. Standard and Premium subscription features will also be showcased behind “velvet rope” areas to allow players to make a fully-informed subscription decision."

Vogster is also introducing the "Original Gangsters" program which will reward all customers who purchase the game between launch and the conversion to the free-to-play model later this month with a third month of Premium Subscription free of charge, an "Original Gangster" tag and icon, and priority access to future content.

As a result of the upcoming changes, the retail boxed copy of CrimeCraft available at BestBuy and FutureShop will now come with three months of Premium Subscription time, 100 gold bars, exclusive Marc Ecko and Atticus Clothing in-game items, a discount card for in game purchases, and a combat backpack which increases inventory space.

For more information on CrimeCraft, check out the game's official website here.

 That is BEYOND sad.

The game hasn't even been out for a month. Feel really bad for Vogster on this one. Better luck next time : /

Why does this not surprise me.    What was the best the could have  hoped for with a game that had no real pull?   werent the matches like 8 players max?   Not really a a feature  to be asking for a monthly fee over.       I feel sorry for the  saps that did pay.

Copy/paste from the thread about this in the CrimeCraft forums here:

Having been a beta tester for this game since earlier this year, I can honestly say that the F2P model is exactly where this game belongs. It's not a horrible game by any means, but it's not truly what I would consider an MMOG. CrimeCraft will find the F2P model a perfect fit and flourish I think...

And yes, if APB delivers half of what we have seen in videos and heard in interviews it will be ten times what CrimeCraft is. So if this genre is what you are looking for then you might want to save your time for APB and maybe try out CC to kill some time. Hell it's going to be free now anyways right?

I knew the game was doomed for when after only being released a week on steam it had a $10 price cut...then the next week it was on sale for 25% off

I have a feeling that buying the retail game box and not having a subscription-fee will be the new business model for MMOs. And you know I wish developers would use that model. Its less risky than the P2P model since the market is full of P2P games and a majority of them sadly fail. Yes I know the P2P model is used to keep the game up, provide more content, maintain the servers and etc, but developers seem to make the game first and then decide on the business model later. They should plan on what business model they want to use first and then build the game around that model. It worked for the Guild Wars series and APB is using the same model as well. Hopefully we'll see better developed MMOs where the developers decide on the business model at the beginning and build it around that.

Begining of the end already.  I already predicted that this would not last 1 year.

This shouldn't have had a monthly fee in the first place. It's nothing but a shitty shooter with rpg elements and a 3d lobby.

I'll give this a few more months before the developer files for bankruptcy.

Definitely worth trying if it's going F2P though. This was always going to be the best model for this sort of a game. They really should have chosen a better business model though - if only to avoid comment threads like this one.

Dont feel sorry for me felchers.    I been playing since closed beta, paid my money, and have no regrets.   Then again, I'm a sap, right?

For feeding my addiction, I'm gonna get another free month.  Keeps getting better for me, felchers.

By the time Vogester opens the flood gates and goes free-to-play, I'll be close to max level.

Theres gonna be alot of fresh meat to grind for crafting materials.

So dont cry for me guys, cause it sounds like i'm the only one here having any fun.

Oh, you have no worries. You like the game then cool :). I could really care less about it.

I've tried the game out in late closed and open beta. Terrible standards for an MMO and even for a third person shooter. You can't even call it a decent MMO. It's a shooter and that's that. It should have never gone P2P in the first place. Controls were clunky, No Z-axis (Jumping), No open-world gameplay besides crafting, Uncreative PvE, and not even a unique gameplay mode. It just equals Bad x10!

I liked the game in beta.  Then they had a total shift near the open beta of how the weapons worked.  Then during the stress test, there was a problem with the stacking of defenses.

Basically a whole assortment of issues, and seemingly being ignored by the devs from the posts made and bug reports submitted.

Plus the crafting part was very very... well it sucked LOL.  It wasn't really finished or polished at launch.  And that was the main part Vogster said they wanted players to get a feel of since it was in their name.

Balancing issues aside.  I really did like the combat aspect.  No jumping is total awesome-sauce.  The look and feel and play control was totally spot on.

Now the out of combat bit.. sucks donkey nads.

They should have stayed in beta for another 5 months.  Too bad.  I did see good potential in this game.  Now the only hope I have left is for APB.

For those who played/play the game?  Dont you think it should have been called Crime Strike and Not Crime Craft?   I played and it was closer to Counter Strike then any game with the word Craft attached to it.  Seems they wanted to piggyback on the succesful MMO's tittle and people didnt get the MMO feel.   Counter Strike is very popular and I actually liked Crime Craft much better.   If they would have been more honest with the game not really being the MMO its tittle infered could they have captured the counter stike type players.   Or other FPS players?   Who knows.  It is a good game but....   Not really an mmo.

It is a decent shooter game.  It does need a bit more flexability.

But for players going to buy or wanting to try it understand that currenty it is basically a FPS game.  It has persistent level based character development that favors older players over newbies, you are not on equal footing.  The games are basically free for all, capture the flag, fighting over turf and so on in small matches of about 4x4 to a max of about 16x16.  The main game world is several lobbies.

There is no real crime involved either.  You don't get to rob banks or anything as the banks don't really even exist.  It should have been called something else as the name doesn't fit.  The shoddy story that is available is some sort of fallout world caused by an economic depression and every one is running around shooting each other.

The FPS part of the game is fairly well done though.  They have a solid FPS to work from but the problem with this is there are many FPS games out there you don't have to pay for that are also very good.

Oh there is a PvE element to and a interesting crafting system focused around the PvE.  The PvE isn't bad but you only have a few instances to go through and will see most of it in several hours.

And I'm probably being a bit to nice for the game.  They should have simply called the game, "Let's Shoot Each Other!"  The world has ended so let's go shoot each other.  That's pretty much the game.  Oh yeah and dress up with gang style clothes and wear cell phones around our neck that probably don't work.

If you like FPS games you might want to try it.  It is probably worth about $10 to $15.  You should get at least 10 hours of gameplay or more out of it.

This game should have been F2P before release. I played the open beta a couple weeks before release and WOW, the game was quite bad. It was basically Guild Wars with less depth and a "gangster" type scene.
