BrainJunk Studios will be developing an MMOG based on the Twilight novel series. The game will allow players to play either a Human, Werewolf, or Vampire and explore an "open non-linear" world set around Forks, Washington.

The game will also feature a journal that allows players to teleport to different periods of time in order to experience the events found within.
The Examiner has interviewed head of software development on the project, Brandon Gardner, on the game, who described it as:
an open non-linear world set around Forks. I like the idea of letting players explore the world, and discover new amazing things that are not even covered in the book or the movie.
One really extremely crucial feature in the game engine that was licensed for the game is unlimited world streaming, and this feature allows for the game to go in an open, non-linear direction.
The game will be closely based to both Twilight and Midnight Sun allowing the player to play, and experience the story from either Bella’s or Edward’s perspective.
I’m thinking of including New Moon into the project as well. I really think it’s important to allow players to experience being human, vampire, or phasing into a werewolf.
Go here for the game's official website.
Screw the mmo genre! Just screw it!! I give up. Buffy and now this, I quit!
Will be the next epic fail:P
I don't think I have ever in my life thought "so what" so strongly and that's even after having seen the announcement of a Hello Kitty online game.
A MMORPG designed from the ground up for emo teenage girls - this will be a *monster* hit !!
So this is what the WOW killer will finally look like......
< weeps >
i wish they made batman mmo.
Except no where on the site does it say MMO. It says multi-player, but that's it. Besides, how can you "experience the story from either Bella’s or Edward’s perspective" in an MMO? (For that matter, how can you experience their story as a werewolf?)
I think this was posted just to make us all groan and bang our heads on the nearest dull (or sharp) object.
That is an interesting article. So what I gathered is that it is the "brainchild" of a student? Anything about a production company? Anything about licensing? What about Summit or the author's views?
To be completely honest, I am not even sure this is an MMO at all much less news worthy at this point.
I hate to sound critical but that is how I see it.
i agree with you there... what are they thinking!!!
whats next Harry Potter MMO? Cinderella MMO? i say get rid of all MMORPGs and keep EverQuest and Ultima Online
Have you heard of DC Universe Online? :)
Wait for it...wait for it...here it comes....
i agree with you there... what are they thinking!!!
whats next Harry Potter MMO? Cinderella MMO? i say get rid of all MMORPGs and keep EverQuest and Ultima Online
No...a Harry Potter based MMORPG would be cool. So back off!
Another nail for the MMO genre coffin.
sooooo when we pvp in daylight do we glow cuz thats like not fair!
on another note:
i smell epic fail
I've never seen so many useless post in life, also anyone want to explain to me what this mmo is about because the website is extremely vague.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
Emo Online!!
HEHEHEHEHEHE!!!
omg....laughing....so hard.....help.......hehehe......oh...it hurts.....hehehe......
Edit: wait! wait!!! are you sure it's "Twilight" or is it "Toilet"???
hehehehehehe.....oh....can't stop laughing....hehehe.....
it's about companies having such a lack of creativity that they will try to capture the wallets of all the young girls enamored with the Twilight franchise.
Well notice when something is actually bad. Then the negative posts reflect it. Well.... There hasn't been a SINGLE possitive note for this game. So I like to think of us as all being constructive in our hate towards this idea.
From what I gathered its not even a company - just the idea of two students right now and nothing official.
I think it falls into that "It sounds cool so we thought we would do it" category.
I would really like to know if the author has given her okay for this as well as Summit Entertainment.
EDIT: Read the article linked in the MMORPG.com story...its a real eye-opener!
EDIT 2: The link in the article within the article to the studio (Brainjunk Studios) is.......wait for it........a link to MySpace!!
Looks like a hardcore game.
Oh dear...
the current amount of information on the given site gives the mathematical term "convergence to zero" a new meaning :)
I just palmfaced. So hard. Sooooo hard.
That means that everyone is going to talk like emo kids in the game, that will get really annoying having no emotions in the game. There hoping emo kids will play it and there trying to get in on the money that movie and books are making for the author right now
The best review of "Twilight" ever done:
http://www.agonybooth.com/recaps/Twilight_2008.aspx
I'd hope everyone has seen this by now but it just seems appropriate to post anyhow.
OMG HELLO KITTY ONLINE 2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly this game will attract the homosexuals.. and then will fail.
Ok we get it....Nobody in this thread is a 12-14 year old girl.
How dare somebody be looking for a new audience to bring to MMO's? Who has this crazy idea of expanding the inter-nets anyway?
After realizing today wasn't April 1st, I silently wept to myself.
Exactly...Vampires, like zombies, are meant to be killed. Did everyone suddenly forget one day that Vampires are bad?
Well... considering the auther of the series thinks vampires should be metrosexual pretty boys who sparkle in daylight instead of erupting in violent fits of seizures and fire, what do you expect? The author just wants money, so they'll only care if they don't get royalties or the like.
And so? I'm sure the author of Twilight has a myspace... for every character in the book, that they constantly post on each one, then after several months, copy-and-pastes it all into Word Perfect, prints, then staples together to sell off to publishers.
And nice pic, I'd kill to be Blade in that one, just for the chance to kill them (chick too, I'll claim it that she's a mesmerized slave and killed her only in self-defense).
The sheer amount of internet elitism this thread reeks is more woeful than this game. An attempt to expand the playerbase of the genre hardly that pathetic. I'd say that an "emo" game is way-more innovative than your generic medieval fantasy game with OMGWTF PvP. And, in the end, you really aren't forced to follow the process nor play the game.

You missed my point.
There is no mention of the author's okay, no mention that Summit Entertainment is okay with it or signed on to the project. And the "studio" website for the development company is Myspace. That is the ONLY website for the "company".
So in other words, it doesn't matter how you feel about Twilight or the author......the point is this can hardly be called a game at this point and I am not sure why it is "announced" and why its main story worthy on MMORPG.com. There is little indication this game will be an MMORPG at all.
EDIT: let me add, I think its great that there are plenty of IP's out there that will bring in more players. There are tons that would make great MMO's. I even think its great that some students are talking about doing a Twilight game (I won't call it an MMO). However, I see little indication that this is a REAL project and has the licensing and authority granted by the author and Summit. Until then, its a school project in my eyes and I honestly am not sure why its even worth announcing at this point.
oh sure....next you're going to tell me strippers don't have hearts of gold either!
Still though, doesn't CCP developing World of Darkness Online already cover the whole werewolf/vampire thing? How much room is there in that niche really?
But ... but ... vampires in world of darkness don't sparkle!!!111!!
Despite what you think, I didn't miss the point. You though seemed to have miss the bit of sarcasm in mine. I KNOW there's no mention of the author or S.E. giving them the go-ahead, but considering they have covered 2 of 3 major media with the series, books and movies, there's a bloody good chance of them trying to get into the Game portion, whether its single or multi-player.
While we are at the discussion of whats and what-nots, they don't have anything about a Subscription Model on the site, or anything at all really. They do have that interview, which adds to the possibility of this occurring, with a limited amount of info about gameplay. Most likely they don't even have anything coded, and again, most likely, they probably just recently thought of it.
Any of this obvious? Most likely.
Hell, I bet if anything its just a browser-based game, which MMORPG seems to have gotten into showcasing anyways, and I doubt anyone really cares about browser-based games in the first place so its just one big "Oh well" to me.
Interesting. They're going to have to write a crapload of lore in, because it's just not there. Meyer's stuff is just Harlequin storytelling with a lot of so-called "insight" and dialogue that just rambles on. I'm not trying to say that she's a bad writer (which she surely is), but just that her work does not have the meat, the rich world that would fill an MMO. I'd say any game based on the Twilight series should purely capitalize on the characters - and beats me how they're going to do that in an MMO!
Harry Potter, on the other hand, has a load of lore to go with it, not to mention a writer who was on top of her game when it came to the history of the genre she worked on.
I think it will be totally awesome because when I think of a fantastic world to explore in all my spare time, there's absolutely nothing better than Forks, Washington.
/sigh
You know, after this, the idea of a Buffy MMO doesn't look nearly as bad..........
I read this on Massively earlier today. Seems kinda crazy that you would release the story today, not link to your source, but instead link to a story from 3 weeks ago. What a coincidence.
Also, a Twilight MMO is the stupidest idea ever. That movie's 15 minutes are already up, let alone 6 years down the road when an MMO about it will be finished.
Calm Down!
I just read the article where this information comes from
THIS IS NO MMO
I don't know why the mods here pinned the tittle as a MMO, it planly says in the article that it will be for "platforms" and will be multiplayer, Nothing in regards to being a PC game. Think mulitplayer on your xbox and that is what you have here.
Well I certainly didn't see that one coming.
Much to my chagrin, this will probably be the "James Cameron's Titanic" of MMOs. Millions of angst-oozing tween girls just squeed with glee... I can't stop rolling my eyes.
THERE IS NO GOD OFFICALLY
It will suffer the end of most games based on movies, and die faster than a Uwe Boll movie can go to video.
Yeah, they wouldn't make an MMO of this game. Most gamers don't want to play Vampires by Hollister. It doesn't go with the Halo 3 commemorative helmet and the "Don't make me go Zelda on you!" t-shirt.
It's bad enough that The Examiner is composed entirely of bad bloggers trying to be "journalists" ( and yes, i include Sanya in that assessment ), but the fact that you've presented their badly researched ( they interviewed a "lead software developer" of a non-officially supported game who is actually one of two "kids" who have a snowball's chance in hell of making anything of this that doesn't involve RPGmaker or Realmcrafter ) non-news as "news" disturbs me even more.
How are they the "developers" of a Twilight mmo when they don't have the actual permission or license to make one to begin with and their entire company exist of two kids and a Myspace page?
I thought April first was still 9 months away.
Just after reading this announcement, I got the sudden urge to decapitate myself, do a little victory dance Final Fantasy style, and throw my head to the nearest person I could hit.
Seriously, what the hell are they thinking!? I very much like Twilight, but this... This is like spitting in Stephenie Meyer's face!
Honestly, they couldn't be thinking that there will be any good coming out of this? They might as well make a TV series about Twilight with pokéballs or super saiyans, and tell me, how it would be marvelous to live the stories trough the eyes of a man who's name reffers to vegetables, and who can turn into a giant pissed off monkey.
Way to go, another great story ruined, because there are people on this planet who think they can make an MMO out of everything.
That reminds me, I myself got a terrific idea for an MMO! It's called Duckhunt Online.
Dumbasses.
Boy ever since mmos went mainstream they have been producing super awesome games. Now that twilight is coming out we will never have to buy another MMO ever again.
Zorvan gets it!!
I agree with you entirely.

I notice in the past few weeks that MikeB is not very good at judging what should be posted as news, remember the article comparing WoW to Mario Bros.
OMG HELLO KITTY ONLINE 2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly this game will attract the homosexuals.. and then will fail.
Actually you fail for your homophobia.
Secondly, Ive never read the books although Ive worked at Borders for years. The majority of people who bought this book were your average looking human being. The whole goth/emo/mall punk crowd become associated with this series because they are the only ones who stand out and are easy enough to make fun of. When a Lord of the Rings MMO was announced nobody here was saying "OMG ALL OF THE FAT BASEMENT NERDS ARE GOING TO BE IN THIS GAME" as much of the non MMO gaming community probably did....becuase to whatever extent we here at mmorpg.com ARE that stereotype, although we also recoginze that we are not the only ones who love LOTR. So step outside of the box for a moment.
That being said, I do think that this game will just be a poor attempt to milk the franchise. No heart.
I like vampires, but I don't see how this can compete with CCP and White wolfs upcoming "World of darkness online", Twilight is just a cheesy rippoff from "Vampire - The masquerade" anyways.
WoDO is made by a succesful MMO company and one of the biggest pen and paper RPG companys out there. Twilight will be made by a few students... Which is most likely the best game here?
I just don't see how they can pull this off. CCPs game will be interesting to have a look on, I will surely buy it but not a twilight MMO unless they actually can offer something fun that noone else can.
It is good that other genres comes out as MMOs than fantasy and Sci-fi games but I would prefer something else than this.
I'd rather play Hello Kitty Online than subject myself to a Twilight MMO.
You thought Barrens Chat was bad in WoW? how about chat dominated by teenage girls lol, because they will obviously make up the majority of the playerbase.
Kinda disheartening, everyone wants to jump on the mmo bandwagon just because they see a chance for profits, nothing new about that - but you'd think they would want to cater to a larger audience, opposed to an extremely limited one.
They wont have to compete. Itll be two completely different crowds. Think about almost every other MMO thats been made, they all have the same 4 or 5 races and similar settings. While Lord of the Rings has the same settings and races as every other fantasy MMO, it dosent have to compete because it is first and foremost appealing to fans of the tolkien universe.
Twilight fans and less mainstream gamers will go to twilight. PnP players and veteran MMO games will give WoD a shot.
No one is waiting for a Twilight MMO. Twilight is, to say the least and most obvious of it, a love story. It tells how the girl falls in love with the guy who turns out to be a vamp. I really don't need an 'MMOG' of it, to tell me that.
The author of the series did a great job translating the story's magics and the love it contains. Let's not screw that up with some brainless MMO about it.
I say dismember, and burn the pieces.
This is a joke. Right? If it's not, this is fail worthy.
May the investors in this crap see the errors of their ways.
May the creator of this crap see the fallacy in the idea.
May anyone contemplating playing this, grow the **** up.
I would actually look at a BtVS MMO to see how it was progressing if not for morbid curiosity. But this... no ******* way.
Bad idea. Really bad.
Well this news made me laugh . How the hell are they going to make an mmo out of this ??? Whats it going to be about Vampire romance ? I mean i thought a firefly mmo would nt do well because it had too limited and appeal but i cant think of sorce material worse than this to base any kind of game on. I ll eat my hat if this gets made . Hell i ll eat all your hats .
Protip: there won't actually be a Twilight MMOG.
The games website cals it a video game, but with multiplayer. I guess that means MMO but apparently it will be all about decorating a house? As a vampire, werewolf or human? Guess playing an emo angst ridden tween is where the horror part comes into it.
No...a Harry Potter based MMORPG would be cool. So back off!
I'd have to agree, I can see the potential in a HP MMO. Like a more realistic wizards 101.
This news article made the 11 yr old girls in my home overflow with joy while it made my 39 yr old gf die a little inside.
Looks like it could be a browser game
Others have said but I'll re-iterate:
THIS IS NOT OFFICIAL
The "lead developer" has said on other blogs that when it is finished and polished they'll "release it" to Summit Entertainment. Summit Entertainment is a film studio - they don't release games and they don't have the game rights to Twilight.
This is a couple of guys making an unofficial game using a cheap game engine.
Expect this to disappear as soon as the copyright holders send legal paperwork to BrainJunk.
So it is fail.
NOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Someone should make it illegal!!!!!!!!! Why would anyone think this was a good idea!!!!
I'm reasonably sure that a game set in the world of Twilight (note I said "a" game, not necessarily "this" game) could be a roaring success.
The target market would be the huge number of non-Internet-rage-nerd gamers that enjoy playing the Sims, Second Life, Habbo, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if combat was de-emphasised or even non-existent. People would buy it and love it, and the majority would be doing it because of the "brand", not the EZPVP.
That said, I can't see it working as an MMO for all the reasons this thread details. The last thing you want is a bunch of MMORPG trolls showing up and going all Viking on Forks, Washington.
thank goodness this game if it even manages to be released officially, will FAIL
ROFLMAO!! O m g....I'm still laughing. What a great response!
I have to say on the MMO vs. multi-player comment....this is a growing problem. I have seen people proclaiming several different games to be MMOs, that are indeed NOT, but rather co-op play mutli-player games. I think that many modern gamers have either forgotten what a real MMO is, or...they've just decided to re-define it. Either way....it makes me a bit....sad. ;)
I would love to see a REAL vampire type MMO ala Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines type of thing. This, however, is certainly NOT that thing. LOL
Twilight MMO?? lol
I smell another DAWN
That would be my first realistic thought on this.
Face meet palm.
Another reason why game developers and executives just aren't paying attention to what our genre of gamers are looking for.
Bitter SWG vets finally get the open world non-linear sandbox MMO they've always whined about.
The Twilight MMO.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Thank you for reiterating this.
I am not sure why people comment blindly without reading the original article. It is beyond me.
Wow, this made me cry.
that just ruined my day :(
There is not enough face palm pictures for this......So i am just gonna back away.....AS FAST AS I CAN.
I know I am going against the grain but anything Vampires is worth trying even if it may suck afterwards. :) . I guess I am optimistic. Being after Twilight is a bit weird though i agree. Vampire Bloodlines The Masquerade would have been a good MMO try. I know there is another Vampire MMO in the making somewhere i just forget where. :). getting old. They will have to really deliver on this one if they even want to have a chance in the MMO world. I agree that this may be another nail in the coffin as someone said. Maybe when people think MMO they think big raids and big groups. That is why you guys are so negative about it? I am a casual player so "lite" grouping is just my style. :) . Go ahead shoot down the good guy now......
Kiddies need MMOs to play also, but I think this type of game would have more appeal on MMOsite.com rather than here.
Jeeze I thought it was THE TWILIGHT ZONE. I am a big fan of The Twilight Zone, but everytime I say the word 'twilight' everybody goes,"ZOMG VAMPIES AND THE EDVARD", but everytime I hear the word twilight i goes, "ZOMG ROD SERLING AND THE HOTNESS" Ahhh I can already seen a porno being made about twilight. Twilight: the bloodsucking penis
Funcom is working on The Secrect World MMO.
CCP is working on The World of Darkness MMO.
If you're looking for a vampire MMO...you really don't need to be looking at Twilight.
I don't think anyone with two brain cells to knock together would pick this over WoD.
Have you met any Twilight fans? If so, then you would know that intelligence isnt the strong suit of that crowd, they are mainly 13 yr old girls and their 35 yr old mothers.
AWMAHGAWSH!
Is it true?
Yes! Yes!!!! *faints* /sarcasm
Hahahahahahahahahahaha oh man this is rich.
I literally Facepalmed and said "What the fvck" out loud.
I mean seriously, what the hell!
Always look for the "Zone" otherwise their jacking your fang.
I cant believe there is going to be..... "Not another teen vampire movie" Is getting a MMO.... that is THE dumbest game I have heard of in a while.
Now if you wanna call someone a pussy or a kid you don't have to call them a WoW player anymore. Grats WoW guys, this is pretty good for yall! lol
Yeah I don't know how it's going to be a success. First it would have to appeal to female gamers. But when a company tries to appeal to "girls" what happens? You can get stupid stuff like "Barbie Horse Adventure." The truth is "girl friendly games ususally get dumbed down a lot... we'll probably have to collect crosses and the go shopping in the mall for new outfits... *sigh* it just not a good universe to turn into an MMO. Besides the fad will fade so I'm not very concerned about it.
I guess if it makes Twilight fans happy then sure, let them try to make a twilight MMO. But most of the fans are readers or the romantic type and not into fighting and leveling up.
I'm definitely rolling on a PvP server!
Funcom is working on The Secrect World MMO.
CCP is working on The World of Darkness MMO.
If you're looking for a vampire MMO...you really don't need to be looking at Twilight.
Thanks for the reminder. I'll check them out right now. :)
people scoffed at me when i said this was gonna happen, HA! whos laughing now!
Twilight MMO sweet I've never read the books or seen the movie but if it's about vampires I can't remember the last time they let you be one in an MMO so bring it on.
oh boy ... you don't know where you're getting yourself into ...
BSG, Bladerunner....etc *cheers*
This crap = /facepalm
It is amusing all these IP owners who give unheard of development studios their IP.
This will be just another in a long line of failed MMO's because said studio had no clue about the difficulties involved in developing a MMO.
On a 2nd thought, while I liked the movie, I fail to see how they are going to make a MMO out of it. Woe to any foolish investor that gets mixed up in this morass.
So u all can know the truth.
kotaku.com/5325197/is-there-really-a-twilight-mmo
Word's starting to spread that there is a Twilight game currently in development. But is it what you think it is?
A report surfaced on Massivly earlier today, pointing us to the site of a game proclaiming to be a Twilight MMO. There were no details provided other than the fact it was an MMO based on Twilight, and that it was in development at Brainjunk Studios.
But, uh, who the hell are Brainjunk? All we could find is the MySpace page of the company's "programmer", Brandon Gardner, who is a student at Westwood College Online. And it appears Gardner is, conveniently, a massive Twilight fanboy.
There's no actual Brainjunk page. And the game's site is broken from the attention. Turns out Brainjunk are just a bunch of Twilight fans, who are working on this "game" for free, in the hopes that Twilight's Summit Entertainment overlords will, as owners of the single-biggest piece of new media property of 2009, like what they see and pick it up.
Which never, ever happens. Nothing to see here, folks. Move along.
Lol, really funny news for me cause just thought yesterday (playin Vampires Bloodlines^^) how it would be and why the hell are there no cool & creepy Vampires/Werwolf-Mystery-MMO (or HP-Style?
)
/facepalm
That's it. I give up on this genre.
This mmorpg is about vampires with sparkly skins.
The highlight of the film was the girlw as fit but the rest of it was shit.
