General : Twilight MMO Announced

Posted Jul 28, 2009 by Michael Bitton

BrainJunk Studios will be developing an MMOG based on the Twilight novel series. The game will allow players to play either a Human, Werewolf, or Vampire and explore an "open non-linear" world set around Forks, Washington.

The game will also feature a journal that allows players to teleport to different periods of time in order to experience the events found within.

The Examiner has interviewed head of software development on the project, Brandon Gardner, on the game, who described it as:

an open non-linear world set around Forks. I like the idea of letting players explore the world, and discover new amazing things that are not even covered in the book or the movie.

One really extremely crucial feature in the game engine that was licensed for the game is unlimited world streaming, and this feature allows for the game to go in an open, non-linear direction.

The game will be closely based to both Twilight and Midnight Sun allowing the player to play, and experience the story from either Bella’s or Edward’s perspective.

I’m thinking of including New Moon into the project as well. I really think it’s important to allow players to experience being human, vampire, or phasing into a werewolf.

Go here for the game's official website.

Except no where on the site does it say MMO. It says multi-player, but that's it. Besides, how can you "experience the story from either Bella’s or Edward’s perspective" in an MMO? (For that matter, how can you experience their story as a werewolf?)

I think this was posted just to make us all groan and bang our heads on the nearest dull (or sharp) object.

That is an interesting article. So what I gathered is that it is the "brainchild" of a student? Anything about a production company? Anything about licensing? What about Summit or the author's views?

To be completely honest, I am not even sure this is an MMO at all much less news worthy at this point.

I hate to sound critical but that is how I see it.

Well notice when something is actually bad. Then the negative posts reflect it. Well.... There hasn't been a SINGLE possitive note for this game. So I like to think of us as all being constructive in our hate towards this idea.

Well... considering the auther of the series thinks vampires should be metrosexual pretty boys who sparkle in daylight instead of erupting in violent fits of seizures and fire, what do you expect? The author just wants money, so they'll only care if they don't get royalties or the like.

And so? I'm sure the author of Twilight has a myspace... for every character in the book, that they constantly post on each one, then after several months, copy-and-pastes it all into Word Perfect, prints, then staples together to sell off to publishers.

And nice pic, I'd kill to be Blade in that one, just for the chance to kill them (chick too, I'll claim it that she's a mesmerized slave and killed her only in self-defense).

The sheer amount of internet elitism this thread reeks is more woeful than this game. An attempt to expand the playerbase of the genre hardly that pathetic. I'd say that an "emo" game is way-more innovative than your generic medieval fantasy game with OMGWTF PvP. And, in the end, you really aren't forced to follow the process nor play the game.

You missed my point.

There is no mention of the author's okay, no mention that Summit Entertainment is okay with it or signed on to the project. And the "studio" website for the development company is Myspace. That is the ONLY website for the "company".

So in other words, it doesn't matter how you feel about Twilight or the author......the point is this can hardly be called a game at this point and I am not sure why it is "announced" and why its main story worthy on MMORPG.com. There is little indication this game will be an MMORPG at all.

EDIT: let me add, I think its great that there are plenty of IP's out there that will bring in more players. There are tons that would make great MMO's. I even think its great that some students are talking about doing a Twilight game (I won't call it an MMO). However, I see little indication that this is a REAL project and has the licensing and authority granted by the author and Summit. Until then, its a school project in my eyes and I honestly am not sure why its even worth announcing at this point.

Despite what you think, I didn't miss the point. You though seemed to have miss the bit of sarcasm in mine. I KNOW there's no mention of the author or S.E. giving them the go-ahead, but considering they have covered 2 of 3 major media with the series, books and movies, there's a bloody good chance of them trying to get into the Game portion, whether its single or multi-player.

While we are at the discussion of whats and what-nots, they don't have anything about a Subscription Model on the site, or anything at all really. They do have that interview, which adds to the possibility of this occurring, with a limited amount of info about gameplay. Most likely they don't even have anything coded, and again, most likely, they probably just recently thought of it.

Any of this obvious? Most likely.

Hell, I bet if anything its just a browser-based game, which MMORPG seems to have gotten into showcasing anyways, and I doubt anyone really cares about browser-based games in the first place so its just one big "Oh well" to me.

Interesting. They're going to have to write a crapload of lore in, because it's just not there. Meyer's stuff is just Harlequin storytelling with a lot of so-called "insight" and dialogue that just rambles on. I'm not trying to say that she's a bad writer (which she surely is), but just that her work does not have the meat, the rich world that would fill an MMO. I'd say any game based on the Twilight series should purely capitalize on the characters - and beats me how they're going to do that in an MMO!

Harry Potter, on the other hand, has a load of lore to go with it, not to mention a writer who was on top of her game when it came to the history of the genre she worked on.

Honestly this game will attract the homosexuals.. and then will fail.

Actually you fail for your homophobia.

Secondly, Ive never read the books although Ive worked at Borders for years. The majority of people who bought this book were your average looking human being. The whole goth/emo/mall punk crowd become associated with this series because they are the only ones who stand out and are easy enough to make fun of. When a Lord of the Rings MMO was announced nobody here was saying "OMG ALL OF THE FAT BASEMENT NERDS ARE GOING TO BE IN THIS GAME" as much of the non MMO gaming community probably did....becuase to whatever extent we here at mmorpg.com ARE that stereotype, although we also recoginze that we are not the only ones who love LOTR. So step outside of the box for a moment.

That being said, I do think that this game will just be a poor attempt to milk the franchise. No heart.

WoDO is made by a succesful MMO company and one of the biggest pen and paper RPG companys out there. Twilight will be made by a few students... Which is most likely the best game here?

I just don't see how they can pull this off. CCPs game will be interesting to have a look on, I will surely buy it but not a twilight MMO unless they actually can offer something fun that noone else can.

It is good that other genres comes out as MMOs than fantasy and Sci-fi games but I would prefer something else than this.

They wont have to compete. Itll be two completely different crowds. Think about almost every other MMO thats been made, they all have the same 4 or 5 races and similar settings. While Lord of the Rings has the same settings and races as every other fantasy MMO, it dosent have to compete because it is first and foremost appealing to fans of the tolkien universe.

Twilight fans and less mainstream gamers will go to twilight. PnP players and veteran MMO games will give WoD a shot.

No one is waiting for a Twilight MMO. Twilight is, to say the least and most obvious of it, a love story. It tells how the girl falls in love with the guy who turns out to be a vamp. I really don't need an 'MMOG' of it, to tell me that.

The author of the series did a great job translating the story's magics and the love it contains. Let's not screw that up with some brainless MMO about it.

I say dismember, and burn the pieces.

I would actually look at a BtVS MMO to see how it was progressing if not for morbid curiosity. But this... no ******* way.

Bad idea. Really bad.

No...a Harry Potter based MMORPG would be cool.   So back off!

I'd have to agree, I can see the potential in a HP MMO. Like a more realistic wizards 101.

This is a couple of guys making an unofficial game using a cheap game engine.

Expect this to disappear as soon as the copyright holders send legal paperwork to BrainJunk.

I'm reasonably sure that a game set in the world of Twilight (note I said "a" game, not necessarily "this" game) could be a roaring success.

The target market would be the huge number of non-Internet-rage-nerd gamers that enjoy playing the Sims, Second Life, Habbo, etc.  I wouldn't be surprised if combat was de-emphasised or even non-existent.  People would buy it and love it, and the majority would be doing it because of the "brand", not the EZPVP.

That said, I can't see it working as an MMO for all the reasons this thread details.  The last thing you want is a bunch of MMORPG trolls showing up and going all Viking on Forks, Washington.

I think this was posted just to make us all groan and bang our heads on the nearest dull (or sharp) object.

ROFLMAO!!  O m g....I'm still laughing. What a great response!

I have to say on the MMO vs. multi-player comment....this is a growing problem. I have seen people proclaiming several different games to be MMOs, that are indeed NOT, but rather co-op play mutli-player games. I think that many modern gamers have either forgotten what a real MMO is, or...they've just decided to re-define it. Either way....it makes me a bit....sad. ;)

I would love to see a REAL vampire type MMO ala Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines type of thing. This, however, is certainly NOT that thing. LOL

Yeah I don't know how it's going to be a success. First it would have to appeal to female gamers. But when a company tries to appeal to "girls" what happens? You can get stupid stuff like "Barbie Horse Adventure." The truth is "girl friendly games ususally get dumbed down a lot... we'll probably have to collect crosses and the go shopping in the mall for new outfits... *sigh* it just not a good universe to turn into an MMO. Besides the fad will fade so I'm not very concerned about it.

I guess if it makes Twilight fans happy then sure, let them try to make a twilight MMO. But most of the fans are readers or the romantic type and not into fighting and leveling up.

So u all can know the truth.

kotaku.com/5325197/is-there-really-a-twilight-mmo

Word's starting to spread that there is a Twilight game currently in development. But is it what you think it is?

A report surfaced on Massivly earlier today, pointing us to the site of a game proclaiming to be a Twilight MMO. There were no details provided other than the fact it was an MMO based on Twilight, and that it was in development at Brainjunk Studios.

But, uh, who the hell are Brainjunk? All we could find is the MySpace page of the company's "programmer", Brandon Gardner, who is a student at Westwood College Online. And it appears Gardner is, conveniently, a massive Twilight fanboy.

There's no actual Brainjunk page. And the game's site is broken from the attention. Turns out Brainjunk are just a bunch of Twilight fans, who are working on this "game" for free, in the hopes that Twilight's Summit Entertainment overlords will, as owners of the single-biggest piece of new media property of 2009, like what they see and pick it up.

Which never, ever happens. Nothing to see here, folks. Move along.
