PlanetSide : Remaining Servers to Merge

Posted Jul 27, 2009 by Michael Bitton

In an announcement made on the official PlanetSide forums, the Werner server will merge into the Gemini server, bringing the total number of servers down to one. This merger is scheduled to take place on August 25th, 2009.

Naturally, there will be naming conflicts due to the merge and SOE has provided the rules that will apply in these situations. Find them below:

Character Name Conflict Rules

  • Players that have logged in to their characters during the ninety (90) day period immediately preceding the server merge will have priority to their character names.
  • If both players have logged in to their characters during the ninety (90) day period immediately preceding the server merge, priority goes to the player who created the character name first.
  • If neither player has logged in to their characters during the ninety (90) day period immediately preceding the server merge, priority still goes to the player who created the character name first.
  • Characters who are deemed the lower priority duplicate name based on the rules described above will have a "-W" (for Werner characters) or a "-G" (for Gemini) added to the end of their name.
  • Any player who receives the "-W" or "-G" to the end of his or her character name will be able to change his or her name by using the following command in game: /rename
  • There is no deadline for name change completion, but once a name is changed it cannot be changed again.

Reserve, trial and rental accounts that did not convert to a fully paid and entitled subscription prior to August 25, 2009, will have all characters on such accounts deleted, will not be eligible to have characters moved to the Gemini server as part of the server merge, and will no longer have access to characters on those accounts after the server merge (August 25, 2009).

Example of a name conflict: If "Thom" from Werner was created before "Thom" from Gemini, then "Thom" from Werner would remain the same, and "Thom" from Gemini would become "Thom-G" on Gemini.

Outfit Name Conflict Rules

Duplicated outfit names will change similar to duplicated character names.

  • Priority will be given to the outfit name created first. The outfit name created second will be deemed the duplicate name.
  • Outfit names that are deemed to be the duplicate outfit name will have a "-W" (for Werner outfits) or an "-G" (for Gemini outfits) added to the end of their outfit name.
  • Outfits with a duplicate name containing the "-W" or "-G" suffix, will be allowed to change their outfit name. Outfit leaders will be permitted to change the outfit name while in game with the command: /outfitrename
  • There is no deadline for name change completion, but once a name is changed, it cannot be changed again.

The full announcement can be found here.

Lol that is good news for the 3 or 4 peple logged into werner at any given time. "No joke like 3 or 4.

But this may incite more of the old werner population to come back and start playing more frequently again hence more players.

Actually reducing the servers down to a single one might be viable. I figure that's half the hamster feed and bedding - they might be able to get by with newspaper and some left over corn cobs to keep the little guys going.

Don't get my hopes up, I've been waiting for years for them to shut the game down and let it be bought by some indie company who actually gives a crap about their players lol. My dream is that said indie company will roll it back to pre-Core Combat, apply all of the bug fixes and a few selected balance passes, cut a bunch of revenue-sharing deals with former outfits and guilds for advertising, and put it out here to gather players while they get the investment to make Planetside II.

I have had more epic moments in this game than all of the others I have played put together.

Ironically, the merger of Markov and Emerald killed Werner. At the time all three Servers were a bit on light on population, so when Emmie and Markov were merged there was suddenly a Server with huge battles again, and everyone wanted to play on that one (Gemini), so Werner quickly became a ghost town. Our Outfit on Emerald (Crimson Valour) was TR, and I am Vanu thru and thru, so eventually I quit after almost 5 years. :(

I have just gone back for the free 45 days, and suddenly there are quite big battles on Werner again, and lots of familiar faces. :) Also, I have great ping 0% packetloss and the game (and Server) is running as smooth as silk!  Ironic again then that in 4 weeks the merge goes through, and on Gemini I get high ping and up to 4% packetloss, which will doubtless affect my experience negatively.

Ah well, at least reducing Server numbers to one will hopefully keep my favourite game of all time alive for a while longer... Hope to see you there.

Never played this game.

Just looked at youtube videos like this one:

I have to say, while the graphics are antiquated, it seems to me the gameplay offered is quite advanced. Sony should update this game or make a sequal !

Possibly one of the best MMO's to date.

It set the bar for MMOFPS for ever.

Its the most neglected MMO by SOE.

Nothing matches it, not even the so called unreleased MMOFPS, or Hybrids.

Good bye sweet prince, you showed us what MMO PvP was supposed to be like, you son of Tribes you.

Not this "gear based, HAHA, my stats are larger numbers than yours" bull crap.

Such an epic game, now completely destroyed by recent mismanagement.

If you have already purchased it in the past, you should be able to download it through Station Launcher.

Was the best MMO by far.  If they made it more secure, and/or made a Planetside2, they would have made me a member for life.

So very true, which is just one of the reasons that made it so great.

No other MMOG, present or in development can match Planetside for

1) Intense FPS action, and

2) Huge battles up to 133 vs 133 vs 133, i.e. almost 400 players in the same fight, and

3) Sheer variety of weapons, vehicles and aircraft

I look forward to something that can better it.  Until then, long live Planetside!

While Planetside is the best MMOFPS alongside World War II Online, just like any FPS shooter, it loses it's appeal when newer games come out. But I have to say, Planetside does have some brilliant gameplay mechanics, a sequel is needed.

Are these huge battles spread out taking advantage of long range accurate weapons now?   That would be nice.   Last I played the battles were so close together it resembled a melee fest.   In fact team mates would run in front of their side to get right on top of enemy causing negative team damage points for those behind.   Be nice if its changed.   Thanks.

@2) Battles used to be 166 vs 166 vs 166, i.e. almost 500 players - another testament to the excellent programming behind the game engine. It was only when the populations started going down that they reduced it to 133 a side...

A lot of people have this problem on Vista. Have you tried running the game with planetside.exe and the launchpad in Windows98/ME compatibility mode? Apparently this fixes the crashing problem for most Vista users. Cheers

YES!! FINALY

Do you think they'll give naming priority to a more recently logged character from the same account even if the lower priority toon is much older?
Like if you have 6 year old Werner character and a 6 month old Gemini character sharing the same name and account, the Werner char hasn't been logged in the 90 day period whereas the Gemini char has, who would get priority?

I'm hoping to change the older characters name you see.

Either way I'll be back on August 25th cause this game still kicks the most ass if you just want jump-in action.
And there is still no FPS that has matched it's amount of weapons and vehicles.
