Our most excellent friends over at Auto Assault have released a number of stories which were written by some of their testers. These aren't just any stories, however, they're short, short stories. What that breaks down to is an entertaining read in a very short time.
The first is from "Sanjiyan":
One night, not really caring what was going on with the rest of the world, Sanjiyan set out in her freshly-painted bike. Not a single worry, just the feel of how her bike felt while catching air bounding over hills - on the way to her target. Most others can’t even understand the feeling of weightlessness that a bike can give you, and the adrenaline already flowing through your veins knowing your target will be demolished - be it "Benno”, "Mozak" or "Nostos", whichever one was unlucky enough to have their name given to you is as good as dead.
Pulling up to the base she heard the hum of chopper blades and knew that the target was near, and yet he has no idea that she is even there. Time to make a move. The power plant kicks into overdrive and bam! He sees and feels that one, and what a mess. His puny little army of men try to come help him, but she just laughs. They won’t even make it in time to save him, though they might provide some interesting fun after killing the target.
As the dust clears and she surveys the wreckage while pulling out, she tacks another name to her kill list and heads off to collect her bounty. “Nostos, huh? He wasn’t any more then an overgrown Scav with wings.”

Turbine's Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormreach, has released yet another Beta Journal. The beta journals are actual testimonials from beta testers which are posted on the official DDO website. This time around, number 6 in the series, we are given a "Not so Brief Guide to Creating a Well Rounded Bard":
This week we have a journal entry describing how one person created their bard. As always, this journal was written by a player in our Beta and not by the Turbine staff. A not-so-brief guide to creating a well-rounded bard (a.k.a. Shakespeare was a wimp!) Everyone knows the old saying – bards are jacks of all trades, masters of none. So put down that sword, pull up a chair, and let me tell you how to do just that before you hurt yourself. You want a character that can pepper targets from a distance but is still able to handle a blade, right? And you want a character that can sing a few songs, give those finger-wiggling sorcerers a run for their money, and still be able to charm the skin off a snake? Well...listen up.
In DDO, the first choice you have to make that will impact your bard is race. Now, while you can take any race you wish, and probably end up with a half-decent bard, your best choices are really human, elf, and halfling, since the other races take a hit in the Charisma department.
I chose human as a solid all-around base. While all races have their own special advantages, humans come with a couple significant bonuses that really help a generalist like the bard: 1 bonus feat at creation, plus 1 bonus skill point per level and a handful of extra skill points at creation. If I’d wanted a more archery-focused or rogue-like bard, I might have chosen elf – their bonuses dovetail nicely with both of those concepts. If I’d wanted to focus a bit more on scouting, and cared less about being able to do damage in melee (or more about being able to dodge), I’d probably have chosen halfling. Remember, we’re having this little talk in order to create a nicely rounded bard, and some choices have to be made.

Guild Wars has announced their newest Guild of the Week. This time around, the popular web feature shines the spotlight onto the guild, "Forever Knights". This guild is made up of players from a number of different countries and puts an emphasis on roleplaying.
Formed over five years ago, Forever Knights members have remained together throughout their adventures across a variety of online games. The guild was drawn to Guild Wars during the Beta Weekend Events, when some of its members became addicted to the game. By distributing their Friends' Passes to one another, all of the guild's members soon found themselves hooked. Now over forty members strong, FK just celebrated its anniversary in Tyria this past August.
Forever Knights members focus on the art of roleplaying—not just within the world of Guild Wars itself, but also by bringing their own stories into the game. They adhere to a code of honor that governs how they act and interact with other players in the game. Upon reaching the rank of Knight, members must swear to uphold these values, which center prominently on respecting fellow gamers.
Forever Knights also makes use of an active awards system. Awards are given out for various accomplishments, which include recruiting new members, being an active long-time member, doing a good deed for the guild, giving the guild a good reputation, participating in outstanding roleplaying, engaging in acts of bravery, or winning one of the guild’s PvP tournaments. These awards are shown as graphics (rings) added next to the names of the members on the guild’s forums and website.

For now, we are facing some user authentication issues, but nothing we can’t solve, hopefully! The whole development team is working very hard and does everything it takes in order to turn this difficult time in nothing but a short-lived inconvenience.

Raymond Wood, a Mission Designer at Flying Lab, provides today's developer journal. In this installment, Wood discusses his design work on the game's PvP system. To go with his journal, we also have one exclusive screenshot.
Hello, everyone. My name’s Raymond Wood, and I’m a mission designer for Pirates of the Burning Sea. I joined Flying Lab earlier this year and have been having a great time shouting “Arrrrr” at all my coworkers. Normally, mission designers build PvE missions and combat encounters, but recently I was lucky enough to lend my mission expertise to one of the coolest parts of the PvP system.
Our first design goal when we sat down to work out the details of the PvP system can be summed up in one word: “Relevance.” Too many games place PvP on the borders, as something that happens at the edge of the map between players who aren’t necessarily tied in to the rest of the game. Often, PvP takes place in areas that are wholly separated from the main geography of the game. That isolation makes the player versus player struggles seem less exciting to us, so our first decision was to place the PvP in places players go, places they care about. In Pirates of the Burning Sea, the hottest PvP areas will be right in the middle of the map, where players live and trade and do missions.

Today we have a special treat for City of Heroes fans. Cryptic Studios has sent along an exclusive peek inside their holiday-content. Included are four screenshots including images of the contact who provides these special missions and special holiday jetpacks that are available.

The next stage of the event will be happening very soon – villains from the Rogue Isles will creep towards Paragon City to attempt to embarrass Statesman and ruin the holidays. Can the heroes foil the nefarious plan?
We have exclusive screenshots of the City of Heroes contact, Agent Wallace. Agent Wallace will help heroes counter Lord Recluse’s Operation Scrooge by sending them on a special mission to the Rogue Isles.Heroes and villains will enter each other’s territory and battle for control of the holidays. Be sure to check it out before January 2nd!

Melissa Meyer, the Producer of Hero's Journey, has answered more of our questions in the 12th installment of our interview series. She has also provided us with two exclusive screenshots of the game as that series enters its 31st week.
MMORPG.com: The world of Hero’s Journey is still a mystery to many. Can you talk about the backstory of your game, both from a fictional point of view and what logistical efforts are being put into developing it?
Melissa Meyer: Our backstory is developed by an in-house team of designers. Among them are some of the people that developed the extensive backstories for our IFE games, DragonRealms and GemStone. We have also included our Art Director – not only for her amazing capacity at developing creative fiction, but also for her power to assist us in visualizing the world of Elanthia, past and present.
Outside of a few documents, our history is mostly in notes and scribbles at the moment, but we’re slowly working to flesh those out into comprehensible written word. And now that our GameMaster team has begun to mature, we have begun to involve them in assisting us in fleshing out the details.
Our objective is to integrate the history of the world into the game and gameplay to such a degree that people will be inspired to seek it out, read it and enjoy it.
In prior interviews we explained that the world was destroyed hundreds of years ago by the ruling factions, and they are now attempting to put it back together. Beyond that, it is hard to describe in only a few paragraphs. Our history is detailed and in-depth … and discovering all the little details will be an engaging part of gameplay. A backstory of that degree would require many of it’s own Weekly Q&As to begin to unveil.
You can read the full interview and see both new images here.
