Endless Ages : Moving Platforms and Quests

Posted May 03, 2005 by Craig McGregor

Avaria has just announced some new and exciting updates to Endless Ages.  They have added moveable platforms, destroyable objects and a new quest user interface to make life a little easier for newbies:

New Moving Platform
Hello everyone, its about time for an update again! In our tireless efforts to bring you the very best endless ages has to offer, we have developed even more new technology that will be featured in the updates to come. Allow me to give you a little background before I get to the meat of this update. In a massively multiplayer game, it is extremely difficult to create a destructible environment, the ability to sync up moving objects that can shift at high speeds while players stand on them, as well as giving these objects the ability to be destroyed is a process that not many have tackled, this process did not stop BedBug of course. In this screen shot, you can see a platform that will be found in the new newbie zone, this, with 2 other platforms are constantly moving and are part of a new quest. Not only are they fully functional, but can be used for transportation. The destructibility of objects like this also opens up new doors for more interesting exploring and quests. Which I of course will not be giving away the surprises!

New Quest UI
The quest system has now been equipped with a fully functional GUI to allow newer players better understand their tasks, as well as help everyone out with the ease of use of the entire quest system. These new UI's will also feature pictures of the item/creature you are looking for, to even further help players identify their target. The backend of the quest system has also been revamped, once our next update is released, we will now be able to change, fix, modify, and move quests on the fly with little to no effort. You can see a screenshot of the new quest UI here.

Stay tuned for more updates as they arrive!

Gods and Heroes : Gods & Heroes Week Begins!

Posted May 02, 2005 by Craig McGregor

Welcome to Gods & Heroes Week here at MMORPG.com. Each day we will feature an in-depth look at the upcoming Gods & Heroes from Perpetual Entertainment. Today, in day one, we take a look at the game in general as we prepare you for more focused articles later this week.  A preview of today's feature:

Traditionally, the weeks that lead to E3 are a bit slow, with many companies saving their news for the event. At MMORPG.com, we have bucked that tradition. All this week we will be spotlighting Perpetual Entertainment’s upcoming MMORPG, Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising, with an exclusive, highly focused look at never before revealed details each day. Today we introduce you to the game, set loosely in 300 BC. In Gods and Heroes players find themselves playing the role of epic heroes descended from the gods and imbued with some of their powers.

With such high birth comes special abilities the designers are calling God Powers. These powers are Perpetual’s answer to the use of magic in other MMOGs. Early in the game each player aligns with one of the major gods which in turn defines the manner of God Powers he will receive. Align with Jupiter and the powers of lightning are yours to command, while Vulcan allows you to unleash the magma of the underworld upon your foes. There are a myriad of options in this system, which will be the subject of a later journal.

Star Wars Galaxies : Slashdot Seeks CU Answers

Posted Apr 30, 2005 by Dana Massey

SlashDot has posted a call for questions in response to the Combat Upgrade recently released in Star Wars Galaxies. As you know, there has been a lot of uproar and turmoil surrounding it.

Since last week my inbox and submissions bin has been overflowing with complaints and rants about the Combat Upgrade put into Star Wars Galaxies last week. Players are speaking out all over the internet, and the media is responding. If you've had first hand interactions with the combat upgrade (either positive or negative) please leave a comment below describing your experiences with the changes, and pass on word of this thread to all the players you can. Think of this as a call for interview questions, because I'm going to formulate queries as best I can and see what sort of information I can get from the folks that I know at Sony Online. Here's your chance to be heard, folks. Use it well.

Also, we at MMORPG.com have sent a Q&A on this subject to the folks at SWG, partly with your help. Look for it here soon!

Vanguard : GameSpot Preview

Posted Apr 29, 2005 by Dana Massey

GameSpot has posted a nice little look at the upcoming Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. Included is a video interview with Brad McQuaid and Jeff Butler.

Like other fantasy games, Vanguard will feature a host of fantasy races from which you can choose your own character, including humans, barbarians, and dark elves. Sigil's Jeff Butler openly cites the character creation system of Star Wars Galaxies as being "probably the best one out there today." That game lets players make numerous adjustments to facial features, such as eyes, lips, and ears, but Vanguard will expand even further on this sort of detail, since it will feature an adjustable skeletal system that will let you adjust the distance between facial features (such as how close your character's eyes are to each other).

General : Exclusive 1st Look at "Pirates"

Posted Apr 29, 2005 by Craig McGregor

Our Lead Content Editor Dana Massey has recently conducted a brief interview by telephone with VR Studios about their recently announced Pirates of the Caribbean Online.  A snippet from the article is below:

Recently, Disney and VR Studios announced Pirates of the Caribbean Online, an MMORPG from the markers of ToonTown Online that lets you be a pirate in a game based on the famous movie and theme park ride. MMORPG.com took the opportunity to learn a little more in during a discussion with Steve Parkis, the VP of Premium Products for Disney Online, and Mike Goslin, the VP of VR Studios who are developing the title. Recently announced, the game is in its absolute infancy, and will not even be at E3 2005. This, however, did not stop us from gleaning some interesting nuggets of information.

Tactica Online : Our Exclusive Q&A #2

Posted Apr 29, 2005 by Craig McGregor

MMORPG.com is proud to present our second exclusive Tactica Online Q&A.  In this feature we ask Luke Carruthers a few questions about the game including character movement, character customization and camera control.  A preview is below:

MMORPG.com: In Q&A #1 you mentioned that combat could take up to twenty minutes. How do you propose to keep this exciting? Obviously, there are the tactical decisions you've mentioned, but in what other ways will this be done?
Luke Carruthers:

Twenty minutes is a fairly common length of time for a match in a strategy game, and it tends to work well because it allows for a beginning, middle and end game, each with its own dynamic. Twenty minutes seems to be the sweet spot – short enough that you're left wanting another game, long enough that you feel like it was a substantial experience.

Setting up your combos, maneuvering your enemy into the position you want them, countering their combos, being aggressive in the late game without running into any traps, being cautious in the early game without sacrificing position, there's never a shortage of things you need to be thinking about, and the challenges are different at each stage of a battle.

Tatsumaki : Alpha Phase Soon

Posted Apr 29, 2005 by Craig McGregor

Eyes Out Entertainment is getting ready to commence their alpha-phase testing for Tatsumaki: Land at War.  They will be allowing community members and pre-order customers to enter the alpha test.  The have asked us to share this message from them:

APRIL 27, 2005

Greetings from Eyes Out Entertainment,

A year ago today, we launched our first site with the hopes of introducing a new concept to the world of online multiplayer gaming.

We've learned so much from our fans over this time and hope to continue our success so that we may produce a totally unique experience for all.

In the past year, we have listened to our fans and incorporated their ideas and suggestions into Tatsumaki: Land at War. We've seen and participated in some outstanding debates on our forums about improving realism in the game environment, how our combat system will work, methods of travel, and how death will influence the world, among other discussions. We believe we are one of the first development teams to take ideas directly from our fans and incorporate them into the game. We are proud of this fact, and hope to continue doing so as we enter the next phase of development.

However, before we begin the critical phase of game system programming, we will alpha-test our custom-made engine to ensure that it fits within the specifications of the overall project. Our alpha test will be limited to team members and those few who have supported Tatsumaki: Land at War.

Please be sure to keep yourself informed on the main website, register, read and participate on the forums, Wiki and even check out the occasional posts on the Developer's Journals. The links are included below:

Vanguard : Brad McQuaid at GU

Posted Apr 29, 2005 by Dana Massey

Woody Hearn, perhaps better known for his fabled GUComics than his interviews has conducted a good length interview with Brad McQuaid, the pointman for the upcoming MMORPG Vanguard: Saga of Heroes.

I guess that's the real catch-22. The fundamental advancement mechanism in these games, unlike say an FPS, RTS, etc., is time invested. You advance primarily by the time you invest into playing the game (although there are certainly other factors -- who your friends are, how well you socialize and maintain relationships, your general knowledge of the world, gameplay strategy, etc.). And as long other games in the genre really do seem to have created a product that promotes the selection of "group mates" based entirely on the items they carry.

Remember, you can also take a peek at Woody and other comics from around the web in our Cool Comics section!

Irth Worlds : Wish Models Purchased

Posted Apr 28, 2005 by Dana Massey

Recently, some have noticed the resemblance between some new monsters in screenshots for Irth Online and those that populated the cancelled MMORPG Wish. I just wanted to confirm that Magic Hat Software did indeed make a purchase of some art assets from Mutable Realms, after the cancellation of Wish, for use in Irth Online.
